A comprehensive driver’s evaluaon consists of two parts: Clinical Evaluaon This in-office evaluaon includes tests of: • Vision - depth percepon, peripheral vision, visual spaal skills • Cognion - memory, judgment, speed of response • Motor funcon - strength, range of moon and flexibility Behind the Wheel Evaluaon This evaluaon assesses the following skills: • Vehicle control • Problem solving ability • Judgment • Visual scanning of the environment • Reacon me • How well you negoate the traffic around you The Outcome Immediately aſter tesng, you’ll meet with the driving specialist to discuss your clinical results, driving-related strengths and weaknesses, and any recommendaons. • Assess a client’s cognitive and physical fitness to drive

• Provide driver training in use of adaptive equipment

• Provide behind the wheel training for deficits related to attention, visual scanning, reaction time and speed of processing

• Recommend rehabilitation services to enhance skills related to driving

• Assist with vehicle selection and modification

The following people can benefitfrom a Comprehensive Driver’sEvaluation:

• Rehabilitation Patients who have stopped driving due to a stroke, traumatic brain injury, Multiple Sclerosis or spinal cord injury and need to identify if they can drive again

• Older Adults who have vision-related changes, a chronic disease such as arthritis or diabetic neuropathy, a diagnosis with early stages of dementia, or age-related changes and are unsure of their safety

• Students or Other New Drivers with a learning disability, attention deficit disorder or a new driver with a physical disability such as cerebral palsy or spina bifida

All services are coordinated by a CertifiedDriver Rehabilitation Specialist (CDRS).

Fitness to Drive is a Driver RehabilitationProgram for people who need to develop orimprove their current driving capacities dueto injury or age-related changes. The programalso helps new drivers with needs beyondgeneral driver’s education classes. Our programaims to balance personal freedom andindependence with the public safety needsof our community.

Occupational therapists, who are DriverRehabilitation Specialists, provide clinicalevaluation, behind the wheel evaluation,adaptive equipment prescription andtraining in skills that are essential to driving.They have the training and expertise to:
