Summer temperatures and rainfall will be near normal, on average, despite a tropical rainstorm threat in mid-June.” Yay! So, whether you’re gardening in your own yard, in the Community Garden at Foundation Meadows Park, or you’re purchasing your veggies from others, the growing season promises plenty. Here’s a look at what’s growing in Valparaiso: Community Garden “This is the third year for the Community Garden and it keeps getting bigger and better,” said Dan McGuire, Recreation Superintendent for Parks. The Community Garden is located at Foundation Meadows Park next to the Parks office at 3210 N. Campbell Street (same location as Butterfly Meadow playground). “There is so much excitement about the garden that the 40 ground-level plots sold out early,” said McGuire. “We’re eager for planting to begin.” Wheelchair-friendly plots Thanks to the efforts of Parks Horticulturist Steve Martinson, this year’s garden features two raised bed plots for use by those with disabilities. “A local contractor is donating the materials and labor to install a path from the parking lot to the garden to make the gardens more accessible for gardeners and more wheelchair-friendly,” said Martinson. Anyone interested in reserving these may call the Valpo Parks office at 219-462-5144. The Fit City Plot Fit City will have its own garden plot with all the produce going to the food pantry at Housing Opportunities. Any gardener may volunteer at this plot. Gardeners are also invited to share extra produce with the pantry, and a box will be set out to collect it for transport to Housing Opportunities.
