Mermaids
Mermaids have been enduring symbols in myth
and culture for thousands of years. Mermaids have
beckoned the adventurous to the sea to face the
known, the unknown and its challenges.
The stained glass masthead for Fisherman’s
Wharf at Kewalo Basin is a representation of the
stained glass mermaid on the cover of the menu of
the original Fisherman’s Wharf.

Fishing Then and Now Commercial fishing and fish markets have been part of the economy and
culture of Hawaii long before the 19th century. Wooden-hulled sampans propelled by sail or oars formed the first commercial fleet in the early 19th century. With the introduction of motor powered vessels in 1905 the size of the commercial fleet increased. Fishing became accessible to recreational fishermen.
Today, the fishermen and the commercial fish industry in Hawaii work with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and the State of Hawaii, Department of Land and Natural Resources, Aquatic Resources Division to insure that our fisheries remain a viable and sustainable resource for our generation and future generations.
The fishermen who go out to sea are good, hard working people who rely on the bounty from the sea for their livelihood.
They are the stewards that we recognize for their efforts to bring fresh seafood to market and to maintain the balance for our precious resource s from the sea.
