Fish monitoring in the Polish EEZ of the Baltic Sea
conducted according the agreements between Chief Inspectorate of Environmental Protection
and National Marine Fisheries Research Institute
funded by
The National Fund of Environmental Protection and Water Management
Quality of sea environment assessment… sources of information …
i.e. what can help us? Preliminary ideas:
• official commercial fishing catch statistics;
• archival data from research surveys (conducted by NMFRI);
• Polish National Programme for Collection of Fisheries Data;
• surveys conducted under the BITS (ICES - Baltic International Trawl
Surveys);
• data from The State Environmental Monitoring Programme (incl.
NATURA 2000 monitoring);
• data from other research projects conducted in coastal sea areas.
First stage of the regular coastal fish monitoring took place in the period 15.07-15.09.2011. Catches were performed by using survey nets for fishing mainly demersal and benthopelagic species (some pelagic species were also captured).
Type I – 7 panels (30/17/40/10/22/50/25 mm), 190 m total net length
Type II – 9 panels (30/15/38/10/48/12/24/60/19 mm), 45 m total net length
Type III – 6 panels (25/30/38/45/50/60 mm), 180 m total net length

Monitoring areas in 2011 – planned to continue in years 2013-2016
In 2012, the analysis were carried out - to propose and estimate the preliminary values of indexes, which we needed to use as the descriptors, stated according the rules described within Marine Strategy Framework Directive.
• the number of species in the catches (in the summer season);
• average number of key species in the summer season – perch (CPUE);
• average number of key species in the summer season – flounder (CPUE);
• average number of key species in the summer season – pikeperch and cod
(CPUE);
• average number of predatory species in the summer season (CPUE);
In studies, the following information were observed:
• average number of large fish (longer than 30 cm l.t. ) in the summer season (CPUE);
• average number of large fish (longer than 30 cm l.t. ) in the autumn season (CPUE);
• frequency of perch (older than 1 age group) in catches during the summer season;
• frequency of perch (older than 2 age group) in catches during the summer season;
• frequency of perch (older than 3 age group) in catches during the summer season;
• frequency of flounder (older than 2 age group) in catches during the summer season.
