2. REQUIREMENTS FOR A SUCCESSFUL CULTURE 1. A Good site 2. Quality Seedlings 3. Good Water Quality 4. Appropriate Feeds and Feeding Management 5. An Intelligent and Industrous Farmer 3. 3 Factors that work together to make a good site for a fish pond: 1. Water supply 2. Soil 3. Topography 4. Water Supply is the most important factor in selecting a site Why? Fish depends upon water for all their needs Breathe Eat Grow Reproduse 5. Water Sources Sea Rainfall Run-off Natura water Springs Wells 6. Quality watr must be available at all times and in adequate supply. 7. Soil The soil of the pond must be able to hold water. It also contributes to te fertility of the water because of the nutrients it contains. 8. Topography Topography is a word used to describe the shape of the land- whether it is flat or hilly, upland or lowland, etc. The topography of the land determines the kind of pond which can be built. 9. The most useful topography for fish ponds is that which allows the farmer to fill and drain ponds using gravity. 10. What makes a good FISH seed for stocking ? Healthy Uniform in size Right size 11. When is the quality of water considered good? If it promotes faster growth and high survival of fish. 12. How to improve/ maintain good water quality? Fertilization and Liming Regular water exchange Maintain ideal water depth 13. What are the nutrients required by the fish? Protein Carbohydrates Lipids Vitamins Minerals 14. Types of feeding Natural food Supplemental Complete 15. The nutritional value of different artificial feeds depends on the palatability, digestibility and nutrients composition. 16. The nutrient composition of the feeds should be tailored to the requirement of the fish to be fed. 17. The farmer requires Commonsense Initiative Hardwork 18. Steps in the Culture 1. Pond Preparation 2. Water Culture 3. Stocking 4. Feeding Management 5. Water Quality Management 6. Sampling 7. Harvest 19. Thank you !
