Our board of directors and staff adopted Cultivate as our theme this year, a theme that captures the essence of our calling. The essence of worship. The essence of culture-making labor. The essence of shaping a world free. Indeed, we believe the mandate to “dwell in the land and cultivate faithfulness” is simply another way to state our mission of “providing Christian solutions in a sexualized culture.”

As we cultivated this year, with the faithful support of our financial partners, we saw the fruit of immediate impact; we also saw the promise of a significant harvest to come.

After writing, designing, filming, piloting, and producing our new video resource called Quest: Parenting in a Sexualized Culture in 2015, this year we launched the product and released it to the public in three distinct phases. First, we went live with the digital version on our website and put it in the hands of our constituents through digital and print newsletters and social media. Second, we partnered with RightNow Media to make

this resource available to the more than 12,000 churches that subscribe to RightNow's library of 10,000+ Bible study videos from over 150 Christian publishers and ministries. Third, we designed and launched a print and DVD version of the four-session series to enable implementation in even more small-group environments.

We directly facilitated engage-ment with Quest in several venues across the country, including a part-nership with the Religious Alliance Against Pornography to produce a webinar that represented a con-densed version of the series and equipped a national and interna-tional audience. Altogether, we’ve had over 1,000 individual and group users engage with the content, rep-resenting a reach of well above that number through small and large group viewings.

That, however, is just the beginning. As we continue to promote the resource through new partners and outlets, and as we continue in the future to develop a community around Quest through ongoing user engagement, we

believe this paradigm-shifting teaching series will increasingly cultivate a love, fidelity, and justice that both prevents and undermines the harms of a sexually exploitative age. Parents are central to shaping culture, and as one parent told us, “This changes everything!” We believe it will continue to do so, and we’re incredibly grateful to the many friends and partners that have generously supported this project financially or have helped implement it in their spheres of influence.

While parents were our primary target audience this year, we continued to inspire and equip the next generation of leaders through our Justice Internship and related campus outreach efforts. This year we hosted our eighth class of undergraduate students in our program. Thirty-seven young leaders have now graduated from this life-changing discipleship program centered on professional development and spiritual formation as advocates for freedom and justice. their generation and turning many to the healing and holiness of God in a sexually exploitative, digital culture. As one of this year’s interns told us: “I’ve never felt freer in my life, because this internship exposed the lies of the world and common myths in the church and helped me understand God’s love for us in a new way.” That’s a world free, one life at a time.

Art, design, and the written word also cultivate transformation, and that’s one of the reasons we launched volume 1 of our new annual magazine, A World Free. This beautiful, world-class publication not only connected our constituency to our mission at a deeper level, it also opened doors to hearts and minds here and around the globe in new ways. As one reader exclaimed about the first volume, “It is stunning, provocative, informative, and draws you into the issues and this mission in a powerful and engaging way. Well done!”

In that same vein of inspiring and equipping our constituents toward a life of prayer, understanding, resolve, and engagement, we also invested in refreshing our branding language and texture, and launched a new website to better engage a global audience seeking hope in the midst of brokenness and exploitation. This cultivation of truth and beauty in all aspects

of our interaction with our audience not only impacted those we served this year, but also laid the foundation for increased scale and efficiency going forward.

We also continued a faithful ministry of presence in churches, schools, and other venues from coast to coast. We conducted 24 teaching events across the United States that equipped over 3,600 attendees with tools, strategies, and hope.

Moreover, we continued our partnership with the makers of the Hearts of Men film as this docudrama moved through post-production toward release in 2017. Noel Bouché is serving as an Executive Producer and this past year members of the pureHOPE team worked with other partner ministries as well as the film’s cast and crew to create visibility for the film, including facilitating several screenings to audiences across the country. The responses from across the globe to the trailers, featurettes, and screenings produced thus far provide ample evidence that this unique, world-class film experience will cultivate healing, transformation, and redemption around the world.

Along with this growth in the excellence and reach of our resources and programs, we also grew our core team. Jasper Hall joined our staff as President after over

twenty years in management at Microsoft. Over the course of the year he brought increased effectiveness and efficiency to our operations and management systems, as well as cultivating significant expansion of our mission into new communities and demographic groups through his broad business and ministry networks. His leadership has already been dramatically felt in our team and constituent base, and it will shape much of the success we see in front of pureHOPE in the coming years.

That brings us back to Cultivate. Everything we do today has an impact on eternity, and everything the pureHOPE community has accomplished over the past three years has an impact on what we will accomplish together in the future. In 2014, we were called to Ponder Anew. In 2015, we were led to Abide. In 2016, we were mandated to Cultivate. And just as God’s people were called to plant trees in the Promised Land and wait one year, two years, three years, and only in the fourth year count the fruit as holy and in the fifth year partake (Leviticus 19:23-25), we have our eyes expectantly fixed on the years to come as a time of experiencing a holy harvest faithfully cultivated as we dwell in this land.

3PUREHOPE

Every day, our dedicated staff pursues a world free of sexual exploitation and brokenness by providing biblically based content and experiences to inspire and equip followers of Jesus in their journey through this sexualized culture. We can’t do that, however, without the generous financial support of our many friends and partners across the country. Here’s how our funds were raised between July 1, 2015 and June 30, 2016:

Individuals $516,017 (74%)Foundations, Churches & Ministries $74,705 (11%)Events, Sales & Other Income $105,038 (15%)Total $695,760

The corollary to our gratitude to our supporters is our dedication to stewarding their donations with integrity, transparency, and fidelity to our vision and mission. As a member of the Evangelical Council for Financial Accountability, we operate in accordance with the ECFA’s Seven Standards for Responsible Stewardship. Also, our financial statements are audited by an independent CPA firm, who tests the data underlying our financial statements to form an opinion on the fairness of their presentation in accordance with accounting principles generally accepted in the United States (“GAAP”). Here’s how our funds were used between July 1, 2015 and June 30, 2016:

Program Services $478,189 (66%)Management & General $131,758 (18%)Fundraising $115,631 (16%)Total Expenses $725,578

Change in Net Assets $(29,818)Ending Net Assets $186,953

*A functional expense presentation helps readers of financial statements in understanding how pureHOPE spends its resources. The broad functional classifications are program services and supporting activities. By reporting expenses in this manner, pureHOPE communicates how much has been spent for program purposes and how much was used to support those services through management/administration and fundraising. While we aim to spend at least 80% of funds raised annually on program services, certain strategic investments in 2015-2016 increased the percentage of our management/general and fundraising expenses and/or decreased funds employed in program services (examples include office space expansion, personnel investments, software upgrades, and others).

My summer internship at pureHOPE was profound. This non-profit serves to pro-mote justice in a sexually exploitative world, so many of our conversations cen-tered around purity, pornography, and sex trafficking. God challenged me to grapple with these familiar topics with new under-standing. Growing up I thought purity was just abstinence until marriage and sinning less, but God helped me recognize that pur-suing purity is not my achievement record. It’s a daily, lifelong pursuit of Jesus Christ and being sanctified through His perfec-tion. Sanctification continues past the wed-ding day because ultimately, two sinners can’t fix each other’s sin. But praise God for Jesus’ death and resurrection because we can set our hope on Him!

—Esther

My summer as an intern with pureHOPE was eye-opening. I applied because I want-ed to be a part of pureHOPE’s mission of creating “a world free of sexual exploitation and brokenness.” But my eyes were opened to places in my heart where I need to be free, first. I have seen the reality of spiri-tual warfare and come to understand the importance of a community of like-mind-ed friends. I have understood and recog-nized things I never knew were of utmost importance. As Jesus said, "For their sake I consecrate Myself, that they also may be sanctified in truth" ( John 17:19). I have come to realize I should not focus on changing other people, but rather focus on trusting God to sanctify me, because that is how a world free is realized!
