We know the healthiest food at the grocery store can be found along the perimeter. That’s why our pantry, which allows neighbors to choose their food, is focusing on fresh options. Here’s how: • The Scott’s MiracleGro Garden outside the pantry provides bountiful, just-picked produce. • The pantry’s plot at the Worthington Community Garden, cared for by volunteers, produces fresh fruits and vegetables for a garden-to-table experience. • Worthington Farmers Market shoppers can “buy an extra for the pantry” and vendors donate surplus produce. • Mid-Ohio Foodbank has connected the pantry with local Kroger stores for weekly pickups of frozen meat and fresh items. Hills Market and Lucky’s Market are also sources for weekly donated produce, bread and meats. • “Food Rescue” is a concept where restaurants donate food that is produced but not used. Little Caesars Pizza, Pepperidge Farm Bakery Outlet, Bruegger’s Bagels and Sassafras Bakery provide hundreds of pounds of food every week. • Evening Street Elementary School pioneered the Zero Waste Cafeteria initiative, and Colonial Hills, Wilson Hill and Worthingway have joined in donating excess milk, cheese and fruit. • Many neighborhood gardeners plant a row for the hungry. • ThepantryhelditsfirstProduce Market in June. The Mid-Ohio Foodbank dropped off 10 pallets of produce that volunteers distributed to hundreds of neighbors in need.

In 2008, the need for a Worthington Food Pantry was presented to the Healthy Worthington Coalition Board as a necessary extension of our Food for Families program. With the recession, suburban poverty was a shocking reality. In July 2009, committed volunteers began handing out food boxes to 25-30 families a month in the basement of a residential building on the Methodist Children’s Home campus. We continue to be committed to helping the whole person: mind, body and spirit by providing food and personal care items to over 1,000 families at our current location on the former Harding Hospital campus. We believe that connecting our neighbors with resources will enable them to find a pathway out of poverty and allow them to give back to the community.

All of our Board members new and former lead with strong convictions and dedication and support our neighbors in need by fostering deep community connections and recognizing the value of all our supporters and volunteers. It is important to acknowledge the contributions of Sandy Byers, a leader who has brought us to where we are today. Her term as board chair ended in June 2014, but she continues to serve as a board member and volunteer. Her leadership has shaped the growth of our impact in our community, and we honor her service. Under Sandy’s leadership, we hired our first full-time executive director and have moved the board in a strategic direction.

Today, our programs and services remain as vital as ever. Last year, our Resource Center helped record numbers of people and we distributed more than a quarter million pounds of food in our choice pantry. In this time of continued economic difficulty, we also provided summer lunches at Slate Hill Elementary and financial literacy and cooking classes at our location. As the scope of our work grows, we find it necessary to retool how we communicate with our community. We are excited to unveil our new identity, The Worthington Resource Pantry and our dynamic tagline: “Healthy Worthington. Hungry to Share.”

The critical work we do wouldn’t be possible without your help. We were awarded the Platinum Level of recognition from the Mid-Ohio Food Bank’s Nourishing our Neighbors program, so you can be assured that we will continually assess the needs of our community and meet them effectively. We are incredibly grateful to all of our supporters, community partners, volunteers and board members for everything they do.

If you or someone you know is in need, please visit our website. We also encourage you to find us on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. Our community is hungry to share: find out how you can be part of the caring, compassion and love.

Vanessa’s family moved to the U.S. from Mexico when she was 14. Due to language and cultural barriers, Vanessa dropped out of high school one year

later. Now, she is working on getting her GED, while raising two kids. She says, “Now, with the kids and stuff, it’s tough to get the GED. It’s been 14 years; I don’t remember a lot of the stuff. It’s been hard with the kids, the house and

then you try to go to the classes.” Her youngest son has asthma and gets strong, frequent attacks, making it hard for Vanessa to get a job because she has to call

off work when he is sick. “In the winter time, it gets too bad and I just keep calling off work. It’s hard for me to work, so for now I am taking time off. I’m hoping he’ll grow out of it,” she said. In this period of transition, Vanessa has

been using the food pantry to ensure her family’s health and nutrition. “My kids, they like what we get here, and it helps a lot.”

Our lovely Sandy Hindall has been with Healthy Worthington since its inception. Six years ago, Sandy started with the original food pantry in the United Methodist Children’s Home, where the group would hand out 25 food boxes per month. Since then, Sandy has been heavily involved with the current choice pantry. She is generally in charge of inventory and is known as our “food guru.” She knows anything and everything about cooking, storing and ordering foods for the pantry! We asked Sandy about what our greatest needs are at the pantry, and this is what she had to say: “Anyone can help out by doing specific, one-item drives. Number one is canned fruit ... I don’t care what kind, just a canned-fruit drive! That is the need and is our biggest expense.” Volunteers like Sandy are what keep Healthy Worthington going. Without their dedication and expertise, our pantry wouldn’t be as well stocked as it is.
