This year, we have taken a journeythrough the themes in the FirstPress. At the beginning of the year,we were challenged to DiscoverGod around us and within ourselves. This summer, we were challengedto Renew Ourselves in God’sWord. This fall, we are again challenged, but this time, to takewhat we have Discovered about Godand Ourselves, Renewed by ourCovenants with God and Ourselves, and now to Engage Others throughGod. Any time we commit to embark upon a journey, we are consciously choosing growth overremaining stagnant. Those journeys, that choice to Listen and Go, canoften be painful as God works togrow us into the servants and children God requires us to be.

We, here at FPC, have journeyedwithin. We have felt joy, elation, sadness, loss. We have endeavoredto Discover God’s will for us as individuals, families, committees, and our own congregation. Wehave looked within to touch ourvery innermost beings, our protected hearts and souls, as wehave discussed our God SizedDreams and contemplated how to “Quit Hurrying”, “Stop Complaining” and really see thebeauty of ourselves and more importantly, ourselves in each other.

Our challenge now is to capture, catch, arrest, grab, snag, draw, attract, gain, win, hold, grip, captivate, engross, absorb, occupy, employ, hire, recruit, take on, secure, enroll, appoint, contract, promise, agree, pledge, vow, covenant, commit oneself, undertake, reserve, participate, take part, join, becomeinvolved in, go in for, partake, share, play, interconnect, fit together, unite, and connect.

If you have an Engaging story to share with your church friends, please contact Diane Pumphrey([email protected]; 563-326-1691, ext. 205).

Let us pray:

Holy God, as you welcome us, help us to welcome eachother. Help us to listen to andunderstand each other better.Help us to love each other. Help us to embody your kingdom in our communities, for Jesus’ sake. Amen.

First Presbyterian Church of Davenport is an inclusive, caring community of faith committed toloving God, loving neighbor as self, and sharing the love of Jesus Christ with all people through worship, fellowship, and service.

Communion is a practice that is meant to be observed over and over throughout the life of aChristian. It is a holy time of worship when we corporately come together as one body to rememberand to celebrate what Christ did for us. All who accept Jesus Christ as their Savior are welcome totake Communion. The Sacrament will be servedon Sundays, October 2 and December 4.

Baptism is a sacrament, and the sacraments represent the free grace of God. There is nocharge for having a child baptized. Call the churchoffice (563-326-1691) to arrange the date of baptism and to request the appropriate forms to bemailed to you. Return those completed forms tothe church. Attend a baptismal seminar to reviewthe meaning of baptism and to get oriented to thelogistics of the celebration of baptism in worship.

Meet Matthew BishopDirector of Music

A Quick Q&A Session with MattPhilosophy/Theology of Worship Arts

Do you prefer to be called Matthew or Matt?

“I prefer Matt, but will answer to Matthew.”

What is your first “music” memory?

“My first music memories (there was notjust one) all involve the role music played inmy family; my mother, grandmother, andaunt sing in the choir, my uncle is a choir director, my grandmother and cousin are exceptional pianists/organists. My first musical memory was likely my grandmotherplaying the piano for me - she definitely wasthe one who inspired me most to ask to takepiano lessons. Everything else in my life hasbeen a natural progression from that point, and I imagine I might have taken a muchdifferent path had music not been such acentral part of my upbringing.”

The theme of thispublication is ‘Engage.’ How doyou see that themereflected (or beingfurther developed)in our Music Ministry at FPC?

“I’ll share part of my resume -- I think itspeaks pretty well to the impact of faith in my musical career, and to how music ministries should ‘engage’ a congregationand community.”

Philosophy/Theology of Worship Artsby Matthew Bishop

Music has played a vital role in Christianworship since antiquity, and continues to doso today across many different traditions. I believe that worship and music are inseparable, as we are called in the thirdchapter of Colossians to “Let the message

of Christ dwell among [us] richly as [we]teach and admonish one another with all wisdom through psalms, hymns, and songsfrom the Spirit, singing to God with gratitude in [our] hearts.” While it is certainly true that different components ofliturgical worship speak differently to eachcongregant, music during the service can andshould inspire those who sing, play, and hearit in a deeply meaningful way; music is a remarkable vessel for text, providing a levelof interpretation and beauty that text alonedoes not always reach. It is therefore incumbent on the musicians in the church to constantly strive to offer music of thehighest quality, in accordance with the common goal of glorifying the Creator.

The primary role of music in a worship service should be to seek to elucidate, clarify, strengthen, or propel the message of the readings, liturgy, sacraments, and sermon. As such, it is imperative that themusic director gives great consideration tothe choosing of hymns and anthems, and forthe instrumentalists in selecting servicemusic, and how this music is delivered. Therepertoire of Christian liturgical music is exceptionally robust and constantly growing, offering a wealth of possibilities for each day of the liturgical year. It is my belief that musical choices should constantly represent the universal nature of the Christian church, and that the choral and instrumental repertoires of churches should include a multiplicity of styles and genres, including classical liturgical music, hymns and spirituals, works by contemporarycomposers (including new commissions), and music from other cultures.

The music ministries of a vigorous churchshould also offer variety in ensemblechoices. Not only is this important in showcasing the diversity of musical experience during the church service, butalso is a way to offer more people from the congregation (as well as potential congregants) outlets to explore or expandtheir spiritual gifts. A goal of a churchshould always be to include as many of itsmembers in the church’s ministries aspossible, and a music ministry that offersmultiple opportunities aids in fulfilling thatgoal. As an educational goal, it is also important that the church’s ensembles collaborate often to maximize how it offersworship experiences to its members andcongregation (children’s choir with adults, chancel choir with orchestra, etc.).

In terms of its role in the community, achurch fine arts ministry has a significantcapacity to provide education to students ofall ages. Children can learn music andsinging fundamentals from participating in achildren’s music program, and adults canenjoy the benefits of life-long learning byserving as an active member in a church ensemble. A church music program of considerable size and stature can also act as a cultural institution within a community, making musical experiences (e.g., Evensongservices, organ recitals, or Advent lessonsand carols services) available to the publicand inviting people from outside the congregation into the presence of thechurch. If the music program grows inrecognition within the community, this can certainly draw new members and newparticipants in the worshipping of God.

MusikgartenWhere can you find babies, toddlers, parents and even some grandparents

singing, dancing, playing and laughing together on Sunday mornings?

nswer:It’s the best 30 minutes of the week for busy families who enjoy the bonding time together as their littlest ones explore music and movement activities that are perfect for child development. The sacred-based Musikgarten curriculum, God’s Children Sing, uses familiar Bible stories and songs ofpraise that are particularly suited for young children, along with a select number of folksongs found inother Musikgarten curricula. The music immerses the children in language; evokes movement; stimulatesthe brain; and fosters physical coordination -- all in a group setting that builds a God-centered, musicalcommunity -- a truly holistic experience.

We meet for Musikgarten classes from 10:15-10:45 AM and we follow the Sunday School schedule. Guestsare always welcome too! While most of our families come regularly throughout the year, we also havethose who drop in when they have grandchildren or friends and family visiting for the weekend. We takethat as a compliment and want you to know you are welcome to come! If you have questions or wouldlike more information, please contact Kathy Middleton ([email protected]; 563-505-0471).

GO!What do you get when you combine approximately 5,000 Presbyterianteenagers, Purdue University and the hottestweek of the summer, some awesome musicand a lot of worship?

You get Triennium 2016!

Twelve youth from FPC headed to PurdueUniversity the week of July 19 along with 35 other teens from our Presbytery in a rowof mini vans.

The week of Triennium was life-changing forour youth.

Eighth-grader James Riedesel, one of the fewteenagers who will be able to participateagain in Triennium when it rolls around inanother three years, admitted he was alreadypacked for the next trip and still wishes hewas back there.

Abby Saskowski commented Triennium wasamazing, and one of the best weeks of herentire summer.

“I became a lot closer to my friends,” saidSenior Mason Pedersen about his week, “Myrelationship with God grew considerably andit really opened my eyes. I got a woodencross there from a Texas delegation and I stillwear today every time I read the Bible.”

FPC’s Director of Christian EducationTiffany Horvath, who was a small groupleader for 50 teenagers at Triennium, said shedidn’t know what to expect during the week,

...into the world and make disciples

having never had the opportunity to participate in a Triennium before. She concluded that it was one of the most incredible weeks she’s ever had workingwith youth.

The theme for Triennium this year was “GO!” and the dailysermons emphasized this to the thousands of youth attending. All left Triennium excited to make a difference in their owncongregations and community—all left eager to “GO!” andmake a difference.

Each of those from FPC who attended Triennium wantsto sincerely thank the congregation for their prayers and financial support. These youth would not have been able to attend this amazing event without the assistance of First Presbyterian Church members, and each of them wants to let everyone know how grateful they are for this opportunity.

As high school senior Elisabeth Riedesel said upon leaving Triennium, “GOTTA GO!”

GO!—and make a difference.

TUESDAY MORNING VIDEO SERIES - 10:30 AM

Give to Live in Faith & Fellowship at First Presbyterian Church

“Several weeks ago, I had occasion to think intently about why Iworship at First Pres. I was baptized and confirmed here; I loveserious, sacred music; and I think Richard is a terrific preacher. But I concluded that the real reason I worship here is that I’vebeen blessed here with a great circle of friends, each of whom is

trying to do God’s work in the world. I am humbled and inspired by them -- by their faith, their fellowship, their generosity, and their desire to be Disciples of Christ. I am humbled andinspired by them, and I give to live in faith and fellowship with them.” – Jim Keenan, 2016Stewardship Chair

This is a great time in the life of our church. We have a gifted spiritual leader and a gifted staff, including a new music director in Matt Bishop; we have a beautiful, historically-significantchurch home, no debt, and a balanced budget; we have a church family with God-sizeddreams; and we’re beginning the sometimes long search for an associate pastor. With theseand other ambitious plans, we project approximately $1 million in general income and expenses for 2017, which corresponds to a 10 percent or greater increase in pledges from allwho pledge. And, for the first time, we will ask those who have not pledged previously toconsider that all who call FPC their church home should pledge at least $25 a month.

Soon, you will start seeing Stewardship Stories (short videos) like the one above from members talking about why they turn to FPC in times of joy and sorrow and why they feelthat here they truly belong to the body of Christ. As you see these Stewardship Stories, pleasethink about your own, then prayerfully consider pledging 10 percent or more in 2017 than in2016. If you can do more, please do so; and if you want to start early, please do so. If you area long-time or a first-time pledger, Stewardship Pledge Sunday will be November 6.

“I give to live in gratitude at First Pres.”- Jane Magnusson
