The bedside nurse is constantly evolving to meet the dynamic landscape of healthcare. The focus of nursing has advanced to include evidence based quality care that is patient focused. The nurse must grasp an understanding of the impact quality indica-tors in conjunction with patient satisfaction has in a healthcare setting. Although this change is evident in all current areas of nursing practice, exposure remains limited in current nursing curriculum. This leaves the novice nurse struggling during their first year to strengthen fundamental clinical skills while incorpo-rating these unfamiliar components. The Student Engagement and Growth Program (SEGway) was developed in 2013 to provide students hand on experience with patient satisfaction and quality initiatives.
To provide nursing students an opportunity to have greater ex-perience in an acute care setting, gain knowledge of the pa-tient care delivery and the culture of promoting evidence based practices at the bedside.

Students were selected from schools already with a clinical affiliation to facilitate the application process.
Students were paired in an area and provided a mentor based on in-terest expressed during interview and essay. Participating areas in-cluded Infection Control, ER, and Inpatient Units.
Students developed and implemented PICO to address a quality or patient satisfaction problem utilizing Quality Measures, HCAHPS, and Press Ganey during the 9 weeks. Students presented projects as poster presentation for final luncheon with mentors, hospital leader-ship and faculty from the school.
HCAHPS Domains where students developed PICO questions to address all saw increase trends
With promotion of rounding by students, all units involved saw increase with response of hospital staff
Out of the 17 students, 10 were employed by AHS and continue to support the projects they initiated
Three projects completed by students were accepted as poster presentations at AHS Research Day
All the students involved provided positive feedback regarding the program experience
The program demonstrated a positive partnership between area schools of nursing and AHS to promote positive outcomes for pa-tient as well as provide real time learning and exposure to areas that are currently lacking in nursing curriculum related to patient satisfaction and quality improvement.
