How many people are running for the office of President of the United States? Lets see... youve probably heard that five people are running in the Democratic Party, and sixteen people are running in the Republican Party. You havent scratched the surface! In the Democratic Party, 91 people have filed paperwork, and in the Republican Party, 137 people have done the same! We arent finished... because over 200 others have filed paperwork as independent or third-party candidates. Never say you didnt have a choice when you vote next year! Someone in that field has to be fully qualified to be our next president. One thing is almost certain. Each one of this large class of contenders will promise you all sorts of things. Whether you lean right or left or hew to the center, theres a candidate for President who is going to stoke your hopes and dreams that something can be better than how things are now. Even the Prohibition and the Socialist Parties have platforms, policy positions, and promises, if thats where you are. The Roman emperors knew that they had to provide free bread at public gatherings, and the spectacle of the grisly events at Coliseums, in order to keep people entertained. Bread and circuses have never died; they are with us today. After Jesus feeds the crowd of five thousand hungry souls, he gives them a reality check: You are looking for me, not because you saw signs, but because you ate your fill of the loaves. He hungers for them, and us, to look past the things which can fill our hungers, and look to the only bread which counts: the Bread of Life. He will be here on Sunday... at the communion table... in the baptisms... in the professions of faith that people will make. You miss these at the risk of following your hungers.
