The Servant
First things first. We’re really appreciative of the constant flow of food and greet-ings that have come our way since we arrived in Fairfield. It’s obvious I’ll either have to buy all new clothes in the near future or find a good place to exercise regularly. Second, I’m impressed with the array of leaders I see in the church. In every area I’ve encountered I see people thinking creatively, willing to step up and take ac-tion. Some churches out there are consumed with taking care of themselves and their buildings. Not FUMC Fairfield! Even while you steward your resources, you’re passionate about reaching out and meeting the needs of people locally and beyond. Those are marks of a healthy church. The challenge we face that has been most frequently mentioned to me so far has been our finances, particularly paying off our building debt. It may not be much encouragement, but that’s not an uncommon problem. I’m thankful the church has had leaders willing to think ahead and provide us with a great physical plant to work with. You probably know that most big challenges cannot be resolved by quick fixes. You also know that none are resolved by collapsing into fear, worry, and playing “What if?” They are only resolved by the joyful obedience (do you recognize that phrase?) of God’s people over time. I know who God is. I know what God has done in Christ. I know enough church history to see what Jesus has done in and through the church in two millennia. Because of this, I’m not worried. We have plenty of work to do, but worry isn’t part of that work.
I’ll close with this. One of my favorite questions once I get to know a person is,
“What’s your next step with Christ?” Have you ever faced that question before? It
presupposes that the Christian life is more (much more!) than just making a deci-
sion for Christ or becoming a church member. The Christian life is about following
Christ – becoming like him. That following, that growing in his likeness isn’t in-
stantaneous. It happens in steps. Each of us has some “next step” in our journey
to maturity in Christ. What might yours be?

Book of the Month – YOU ARE WHAT YOU LOVE Who and what we worship fundamentally shape our hearts. Popular speaker and award-winning author, James K. A. Smith, helps us recognize the formative power of culture and the transformative possibilities of Christian practices.
We are shaped most by what we love most. If sin and virtue are disordered and rightly ordered love, respectively, and if the only way to change is to change what we worship, then this will lead us to rethink how we conduct Christian work and ministry. Smith gives some foundational ideas on how this affects our corporate worship, our Christian education and our vocations in the world.
Check out this book from Pastor Heyduck. Also, go to the Library (Men’s Classroom) and select other books. If you want to donate materials, please contact Julie Ann Medford [email protected] or 903-389-4620.
Thanks so much for your kind and encouraging words. Your prayers are greatly appreciated while David is fighting this illness. With love always, David Kimball

Dear Church Family, As I am writing this, I am thinking that by the time you read this I will have been your Music Director for almost a year. It has been a great year, and I am so honored that you chose me for this wonderful leadership position in our church. Being the Music Director requires more than just leading the congregation on Sunday morning. Some-times it’s a hard job. Most of the time it is a wonderful and rewarding job. The most important thing I face every week is selecting hymns that will glorify the Lord and hopefully bring you closer to him. I hope that I have done that in these last almost 12 months.
As you have noticed by now, the choir is on their summer break. We will resume sometime this month. I am praying we can do great things this year, and I ask that you will pray that as well.
If you haven’t participated in any of our music ministry, I ask that you prayerfully consider. We should all use our talents for HIS service.
The choir has been invited to the annual “Hymn Sing” in Jacksonville on Sunday, August, 28. I have never been, but it sounds like it would be something very rewarding to attend. I hope you will think about going with us to Jacksonville. They ask that we pick two of our favorite choir selections and two of our favorite hymns.
I hope you all enjoy the rest of your summer, it is going by way too fast.
Love,
Mykle Ann
