My maternal great-grandfather was a horseback riding Circuit Rider, preaching and selling books in northeast Kansas for the Methodist Episcopal Church. Now the closest I’ve ever gotten was driving my second car—a Dodge Colt station wagon from Walpole to Wellesley, Massachusetts when I was an intern at Christ Church (United Methodist) and the psychiatric hospital. Our finance committee is not getting any of us a horse for our upcoming stewardship campaign. We’ll have to ride in our four wheeled vehicles to share the commitment cards. Jennifer Hubbard and Donna and Jim Garrett are leading us by getting the pony express bags ready for distribution so that we can begin our commitment making November 20. Neighborhood leaders will start the bags moving from house to house that Monday with our goal of all cards completed and returned to the financial secretary by Friday, December 1. We are confident that everyone will be blessed by this means of commitment. Please be in prayer with your family about how you will commit to the ministries God has for us here at First United Methodist Church. As I reflect on my almost eighteen months here as your pastoral leader, I am impressed by the commitment this congregation has to the missions housed in our facility—Stewpot serving the hungry, the Child Development Center serving children and their families, and the Caring Place serving adults and their families. We also have staff who work hard to implement the vision—To invite all to know the love of God, to share grace, and to develop relationships so that all may be part of the Kingdom of God as we follow Jesus Christ our Lord and Savior. We worship, study, and fellowship together across the age spans from infants to older adults. We are intentional about including all who seek the love we know. Our ministry with one another, for one another and our neighbors requires that we keep the promises we made when we committed our lives to Jesus. Our prayers, presence, gifts, service, and witness are all part of how we live so that our faithfulness may be fruitful. Ministry requires money. We are asking the congregation to be as bold as those young men who rode the plains with mail. Everyone needs to give because all of us are made in the image of God, the greatest Giver of all life. Everyone needs to give because everyone’s money matters. We have no Daddy Warbuck to pay for our ministries. We are the ones who can! Let us risk being all God wants us to be. Let us allow the glory of God to be manifest as we do the impossible by the power of Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit.
