SPREADING THE WORD

F irs t United M ethodis t Chur ch

To the Family of God at First Church:

The year 2014 is soon to be ushered in with the dropping of the Times Square Ball, toasts with friends and a kiss with one’s beloved. What the year will bring is anyone’s guess. The future is in God’s hands alone. Yet, we always approach a new year with

excitement and the confidence of great things to come.

The coming year will be an exciting year for our congregation. So many wonderful things are in store for our church family. Here’s a

list of ten things that excite me about the New Year for our church.

In 2014 we will be starting new groups to focus on the needs of those newest to our faith community. One in particular I am anticipating is a grandparent’s fellowship. Having in mind the numbers of grandparents who are moving to Noblesville to be near their grandchildren, it will be open to anyone who shares

the wonder and awe of having a grandchild.

We are returning to the foreign mission field with a work team scheduled to travel to Guatemala. Not since Warren Otter led teams to South America have we embarked on a hands-on mission out of the country. Under Pastor Aaron’s leadership, a team from our church will be heading south to directly impact the

needs of God’s children in another culture.

In 2014, we will complete a capital campaign that will care for the church’s mortgage for the next three years. I have a dream that this could be the last campaign and conclude our debt. Our goal of raising $750,000+ in three years is our core

focus. I am confident we will reach that goal as our minimum.

We will complete a very comprehensive and involved strategic planning process that will lay the direction and groundwork for our ministry together for the next five to

ten years.

We will have the joy of baptizing 15 or more babies and witnessing to the power of

God’s grace to bless them throughout their lives.

We will see couples join together in Holy Matrimony, pledging to spend the rest of

their lives in unions blessed by God.

We will celebrate the lives of saints who will graduate this life and enter into eternal life. While we will grieve their passing, we will also celebrate the gifts of their

lives and the promise of the heaven to come.

We will experience the power of God’s saving grace as individuals come alive in

Christ and watch how God’s love changes their lives.

We worship regularly, fellowshipping together, supporting one another through life’s ups and downs. As a church we will be the body of Christ in the world, helping

one another.

We will continue our own life’s journey of faith, maturing in Christ and seeking to be more like Jesus. Some of us will take small steps in that journey. Others will make giant leaps in their lives of faith. Yet, we will all recognize the power of

God’s grace at work among us.

What a wonderful year God has in store for us. I look forward to sharing it with my

church family here at First Church.

May each of you have a wonderful and blessed New Year.

Yours in the service of Christ,

Pastor Jack

brought or mailed to the office, or put in the offering basket (with 'Altar Flowers' on the memo line of your check).

Thanks to all who order for sharing the beauty of these bouquets with the congregation during worship!

BABY SUNDAY Sunday, December 29

In celebration of the births of all children born in 2013, parents and children in attendance on Baby Sunday will be recognized in worship and presented with a gift. We will also have a slideshow of pictures of children born in 2013, including grandchildren.

HEALING SERVICE Sunday, January 5

5:30 p.m.

Join us for this special service to pray for healing for yourself and others. Healing in this context includes healing of body and soul. A great way to start the new year.

Hello Church family,

Since coming to Israel 4 months ago, I have decided to commit the next 12 months to serving with Shevet Achim in Jerusalem. We’re a ministry that helps children in Iraq, Syria, and all over the Middle East receive desperately needed, life-saving heart surgeries in Israel. Apart from bringing the children and their families to live with us in Jerusalem for many months, Shevet’s volunteer body of more than 20 people from all over the world places a strong emphasis on living in unity and

functioning as a Christ-centered community in a religiously diverse culture. I am thankful for your many prayers, and appreciate your continued prayer support for this ministry and these underprivileged children. Please visit shevet.org to view blog postings for each child, including information on support and prayer needs.

With Christ’s love, Nick Boyum

INCLEMENT WEATHER NOTE—Barring a snow emergency, which makes it illegal to be out on the roads, the church will be open for worship in the event of bad weather. If Noblesville Schools are closed

due to bad weather, or have canceled after-school activities due to weather, there will be no youth group that evening. When in doubt, contact your group leader or committee chair.

McMahon Scholarship applications are available at the

Information Booths. The deadline for

submitting applications is March 1, 2014.

CORRECTION TO RECENT STEWARDSHIP MAILING

A sentence read: ―In 2014, these funds will also facilitate a mission trip to Guatemala—our congregation’s first international mission trip.‖ Actually, Pastor Warren Otter took a group to Paraguay in

2002, and to Panama in 2003, so Guatemala will be our church’s third international mission trip! Sorry for the error.

MARRIED WITH CHILDREN

Join Married with Children on Saturday, January 25 at 6:00 p.m. in the Parlor

for Euchre and Bunco Night. You can play either Euchre or Bunco, or even switch halfway through the night! If those games don’t interest you, bring a deck of cards and we can play

something else. We will provide snacks and drinks for the night. Free childcare for all ages will be provided at the church. Join us as we deal out a fun night of cards, dice and fellowship. Please RSVP to Elea Hoffsetz at 770-8185, or sign up at an Information

Booth.

Have you lost a loved one or know someone that has lost a loved one and is in grief? If you’ve lost a spouse, child, family member or friend, you’ve probably found that there are not many people who understand the deep hurt you feel. You’ve probably found few people that will listen to your feelings.

Our GriefShare programs have helped many throughout our community to walk with hope through their grief journey. Yes, we call it a journey. Through video presentation, workbook activities and sharing with in our group meetings you will find comfort and companionship with others that are also experiencing grief.

Our next 13-week GriefShare program begins Sunday, January 19 from 4 – 6 pm in the Parlor. A one-time registration fee of $18 is due upon registration. Although we encourage you to attend from the beginning, we welcome participants to join at any time they are ready. Everyone is welcome.

Our church website has additional information or www.griefshare.org. Contact Carol Miller at 773-2500 or [email protected] if you have questions. Brochures and registration forms are available at the kiosks in front of the Sanctuary and Celebration Hall.

AUCTION ITEMS NEEDED!

Attention all small groups, large groups, family's and individuals! The Grace Circle of the UMW will be organizing the auction portion of the Chicken Noodle Dinner on Friday, March 21. WE NEED

YOUR HELP! Once again we are asking for a donation that is creative and/or unique or a gift card of some sort. Please contact Karen Staton with any questions at [email protected]. Donations will need to be received by March 16th at the church

office. THANK YOU for your support in this fundraiser for missions.

Are you Experiencing a “Winter”

in Your Life?

In addition to the cold weather outside, many people experience ―winters‖ in their personal lives. A recent loss through death, divorce, or relocation may leave them feeling lonely. A hospitalization, cancer diagnosis, or ongoing medical problems may leave them feeling isolated. The loss of a job, the fear of layoffs, or a financial setback can devastate one’s

self-esteem. Family and personal struggles may leave them with nowhere to turn for support.

If you are going through a difficult time, our Stephen Ministers can bring God’s warm love back into your life. They provide confidential, one-to-one Christian care. They will meet with you privately on a weekly basis to listen, support, and encourage you, to pray with and for you, and to walk with you for the duration of your crisis.

To find our more about Stephen Ministry and how you or someone you know could be matched with a Stephen Minister, talk with Sally Kenley at 439-3112 or Keith Beesley at 431-0847. Our Stephen

Ministers are ready for you!

Get 1 and Give 1

Purchase an NFUMC Logo Travel Coffee Mug for $8.00 and your purchase will allow us to give one as a gift to a new person at First Church. Pick one up now in the church office during the week or on Sunday

mornings.

CLOTHESLINE PROJECT

For over ten years now our United Methodist Women have been sponsoring the Clothesline Project which provides clothing items for children of families receiving assistance from

PREVAIL (Victims Awareness and Support Program of Hamilton County). This year, as of mid-December, over 113 clothing items (including shoes and boots) have been donated for 46 children who range in age from 3 to 17 years. This ministry would not succeed were it not for the generosity of this wonderful mission-minded

congregation! Thank you---thank you!!

May you be blessed during this coming year as you have blessed so many others. Again, thank you for being the loving, caring persons that you are!! (And keep watching the Information Booths for those

Clothesline tags!!!)

Book Review from UMW Reading List by Carol Brost

King Peggy by Peggielene Bartels and Eleanor Herman

Peggielene Bartels was a secretary working in the Ghana Embassy in Washington, D.C. when she received startling news. Her uncle Joseph in Ghana, King Joseph, ―had gone to the village and wouldn’t be coming back any time soon.‖ In her native language, that meant that he had died. Then she was informed that in a ceremony (which had included pouring schnapps on the ground) she had been chosen by the ancestors to be the new King of the village. With many misgivings, and after prayerful thought and conversations with close relatives, she agreed to come to Ghana and be crowned King. During her stay in the village she saw many things she wanted to do to help the people in her village. There was no safe drinking water nearby. The school for the children was in need of teachers, materials, and students. Widespread drinking among the men of the village made for many social problems. And there was no hospital or

ambulance service.

There were many roadblocks that kept her from achieving her goal of attending to her village’s needs. Peggy began to suspect that she was chosen to be king because the tribal council thought she could be manipulated. The village treasury was completely broke. There wasn’t even enough money to give the former king a proper burial, and his sons and daughters refused to finance a funeral. In spite of all the barricades in her way, Peggy persevered and finally she was able to see progress. All along the way she faced corruption, superstition, ignorance, and ancient traditions. Through it all she kept her faith in God and herself. What she managed to accomplish in only two years is an uplifting story that readers will enjoy.

Dear Church Family,

I want to thank all of you for your prayers and

To Our Friends at First Church,

Many thanks to all who

GIVING TUESDAY SETS RECORD FOR MISSIONS

Thanks to the generosity of United Methodists around the world, the first-ever UMC Giving Tuesday on December 3rd generated a record $6.5 million over a 24-hour online giving period. The United Methodist Board of Global Ministries reported that nearly 11,000 donors in 34 countries gave more than 16,300 gifts through The Advance to mission and ministries. The agency’s previous one-day online giving record was $492,882 set on January 14, 2010, shortly after the Haiti earthquake. Our ORANGE Express kids collected over $1,000 in weekly offerings over the past two years to support students at the New Horizons Methodist School in Paraguay. On Giving Tuesday we made a $1,000 donation that was matched dollar-for-dollar, so our gift to the school became $2,000. We also made a $1,000 contribution (which was doubled) through our Faith Promise giving to support the work of Mission Guatemala. Thank you to everyone who participated in Giving Tuesday.
