*CALL TO WORSHIP (Responsively)
This is a place of divine encounter,
a meeting between the ordinary and the most Holy.
Here burns the sacred fire,
the sign of a mysterious presence.
Here the weary find rest and the troubled discover ease.
Here our spirits are kindled afresh
and our feet set on the right road.
Here in this place, a call is given and a mission is received.
Send us, O God, to do your work, to bind up the wounds,
to free the oppressed, to sing the songs of praise,
and to be Christ’s compassion in the world.

thanks to you. We praise you for life-giving air, the sun that
warms, and the rain that nourishes life. We know that this
is your world; you have created it and all that exists, and we
wish to be good stewards of all that you have made. May
our gratitude be turned into stewardship, our praise into
compassion, and our love for you into deeds of mercy for all
in need. Amen.

Calling All Prayer Warriors
Praying to Change Your Life, by Suzette T. Caldwell is the new
guide we will be exploring in Prayer Group. This book truly
has something for everyone and applies no matter where you are
on your Christian journey. We will resume meeting on
Tuesday, September 15 at Vancosta’s Restaurant. Join us for
breakfast at 8:00 a.m. Prayer and discussion begins at 9:00
a.m. and we generally conclude between 9:45-10:00 a.m.
We recommend purchasing the book as a small group study
guide. It is available on Amazon.com. Participants are
responsible for their own reading materials. We will be spending
time in prayer for our church, what God is calling us to do as a
church and as individuals and for the FAITH to see what HE can
do. For information, call Kristen Milholen at 757-642-5228
(cell) or 757-238-3656 (home). Can't wait to see you!
Did you know that we have a spot in the church we call The
Red Room where we collect items all year long in anticipation
of our “Bay Day” sale in September and our Candy Cane Lane
Bazaar in November? This room is in the Education Wing on
the first floor right down the hall from the Nifty Crafters
room.
Our Candy Cane Lane Bazaar is scheduled for November 21 (the Saturday before
Thanksgiving). Think about us as you prepare for the holidays.
We need gently used discards. Do you have some furniture you could donate? How
about dishes or glassware? Books or knick-knacks? Toys, games, bicycles, we’ll
take them!! You would be amazed at what some of our crafters take from the Red
Room and “upcycle” into something new and sell at the Bazaar.
We will take just about anything EXCEPT clothes and electronics. If you have
items to bring in please check with Brad Allsbrook first.

2015 UMMen Spiritual Advance* November 6-8, Virginia United Methodist Assembly Center
Rev. Dr. Clarence Brown
Following many years of tradition, the Virginia United Methodist
Assembly Center in Blackstone will be a "beehive of activity" when men from across the VA Conference get together for he 2015 United Methodist Men Spiritual Advance on Friday-Sunday, November 6-
8. The annual event will feature the Rev. Dr. Clarence R. Brown, Senior Pastor of Annandale United Methodist Church (Alexandria District)
will be the featured speaker; his series of four messages will center on men Making a Difference. For anyone who hasn't heard Dr. Brown
preach, and for those that have, are in for a real treat to witness his passion for the Lord. * Formerly known as Spiritual Retreat, now Spiritual Advance, a change made to emphasize the spiritual growth
associated with the UMMen annual event.
What should you expect at the UMMen Spiritual Advance this year?
Great Speakers: In addition to our featured speaker, Pastor Clarence Brown, we will have devotions, an
update from our Conference Lay Leader, and two special presentations about prison ministry in Virginia.
Clarence's theme will be Making a Difference.
Old friends, New friends and Great Fellowship from Manly Men: Last
year over 25 first-timers joined us. There were more than 120 repeat attendees in 2014 (many keep coming
back year-after-year). Each year is a chance to catch up with our brothers and make life-long friends as well.
Great Fun: Golf, Cornhole, Fun Run and Horseshoes -- just to name a few. Plenty of leisure time!
Service Opportunities: Upper Room Prayer Line, Heart Havens, Virginia Scouting, Society of St. Andrew
and Disciple Bible Outreach Prison Ministries are all represented.
Mentorship: Boy Scout merit badge counseling opportunities with the campers as well as younger men
attending the Advance, many for the first time!
Spiritual growth: After each of Rev. Brown's messages, we'll breakout into Sharing Group sessions to talk
openly about how the Spirit is moving us. Our faith will be challenged and our spirits will grow. You will
leave a changed man!
Rest: Not just physical rest, but the spiritual rest that comes from taking Jesus' yoke. Learn the ease of
making burdens light, His way!
Great Food and Accommodations: In addition to the great facilities in Blackstone at the UM Assembly
Center and the three delicious squares a day, we have healthy and not so healthy snacks both Friday and
Saturday evenings.
Beauty and Peace: Blackstone and VUMAC are secluded, so you will have a chance to get away from the
cares of the world, and focus on God's creation and our collective spiritual transformation.
Musical Renewal: Not many things are more reverential than our men's singing or more uplifting than our
Saturday afternoon concert.
Worship and prayer: Our entire weekend is dedicated to our relationship with God through Jesus Christ.
Regular prayer and worship is integralto the Spiritual Advance Weekend.

Upper Room Ministries launches Moyo online initiative
to help visitors engage with global issues
Upper Room Ministries launched a new online initiative called Moyo (www.moyoliving.org) to
help users engage with important global issues like clean water, racial justice and disaster relief.
Visitors to the website can follow a Guided Path (Encounter, Reflect and Act) to study, reflect
and then physically engage with an issue through multiple offline opportunities. In addition to
the Guided Path, visitors can stay informed about current world events through The Feed, a
blog-like platform.
“Moyo was created to be an online meeting place for people, especially young adults, who are
interested in the intersection between spiritual and secular, prayer and action,” said publisher
Sarah Wilke. “At Moyo, users can study and reflect on today’s concerns, as well as find ways to
act and bring about positive change. It encourages both ‘being’ and ‘doing’ as essential spiritual
practices.”
Moyo has developed content based on the theme “Race & Image of the Divine.” The site
features short articles along with multimedia and multisensory experiences, including video,
music, photography and poetry. Content for each theme will be created by experts in the field
and by user-generated submissions.
“Moyo goes beyond our traditional audiences and publishing platforms and stretches The Upper
Room in significant ways,” Wilke added. “Given that religiously unaffiliated people are more
concentrated among young adults—35% of Millennials are ‘nones’—reminds us that in order to
navigate new spiritual landscapes we need new offerings now more than ever.”
Moyo is the Swahili word for heart. For more information, contact the Moyo Team: Jenn Bryant
at [email protected] or Ben Rawlins at [email protected].
Upper Room Ministries is a worldwide prayer movement devoted to supporting the spiritual life
of millions of Christians seeking to know and experience God more fully. Best known for its
daily devotional guide, The Upper Room is charged to be interdenominational and international
in scope. It is a subsidiary of Discipleship Ministries, a general agency of The United Methodist
Church, and is headquartered at 1908 Grand Ave., Nashville, Tenn., 37212.

September is time for emphasis on Christian education: Every church in the Virginia
Conference is urged to celebrate Christian Education Sunday on any Sunday in September and
receive an offering to help support the educational ministries of the districts and the conference.
When local churches remit this offering to the conference treasurer, half of the collected amount
stays with the conference, and half is returned to the district to help defray the cost of
conference and district programs and training. Churches are also encouraged to celebrate
Christian Education Week this month. Christian Education Week is authorized by General
Conference, and its observance is set by each annual conference. In the Virginia Conference, it
is traditionally observed during the month of September. A free guide for Christian Education
Week can be downloaded from the United Methodist Discipleship Ministries website at
www.umcdiscipleship.org/resources/christian-education-week-2015.
Conference churches have saved 98,854 lives from malaria: As of Sept. 8, conference
churches had raised $988,548.83 for Imagine No Malaria, saving more than 98,854 lives from
the deadly disease. Churches can still send in funds and have them counted toward the
conference goal. The conference still needs $11,451.17 (which would save 1,145 lives) in order
to meet the goal of raising $1 million to save 100,000 lives from this preventable and treatable
disease. You can make online contributions with a credit card at www.vaumc.org/DonateINM.
Contributions may also be sent to the Virginia Conference Treasurer’s office, P.O. Box 5605,
Glen Allen, VA 23058. Make check payable to “Virginia Conference” and designate “Imagine
No Malaria, Advance Special #6450,” on your check or at the bottom of your apportionment
statement. If the check is from a church, be sure to indicate the church GCFA number on the
check.
Ferrum students pack 55,512 meals for Stop Hunger Now: More than 500 students at United
Methodist-related Ferrum College in Ferrum, Va., joined with hundreds of local church and
community members Aug. 30 to package nutritious meals for Stop Hunger Now, a
denominational partner. The 55,512 meals packaged during the event will be shipped to the
Philippines this week.
Quote of the Week: “I believe it is time for us to deal with the most important issue in The
United Methodist Church: living, learning and loving together as the Body of Christ when no
one thinks that is possible.” — Arkansas Area Bishop Gary E. Mueller.
