First Trust Credit Union is proud to have awarded five $1,000 scholarships to graduating seniors at high schools in Porter, La Porte and Jasper Counties. The First Trust Scholarship winners (see page 2) were chosen based on their enroll-ment in an accredited institution for post high school education or training, high school scholastic achievement, involvement in school and community activities, an essay, and a letter of recommendation from a teacher. Every year, First Trust offers $8,000 in Scholarship Awards. $4,000 is awarded to students pur-suing a traditional four-year Bachelor’s Degree. The additional $4,000 is availa-ble for graduating seniors pursuing an Apprenticeship, Certification, or Associ-ates program that does NOT require a four-year degree. “First Trust has a unique scholarship program because we offer scholarships for both seniors who are pursuing traditional Bachelor’s Degrees, AND seniors who are planning post high school education that does NOT require the time commitment or training of the typical four year degree,” said Dorene Martinson, Marketing Director for First Trust Credit Union. Martinson added, “There are many professions that don’t require the typical Bachelor’s Degree, and we want those seniors to have the same opportunities to pursue a career of their choice.” Applications will be available this fall to high school seniors graduating in 2018. Applications will be available in school guidance offices, at all First Trust branch locations, or can be downloaded from the First Trust website at www.firsttrustcu.com.

$1,000 Scholarship Recipients $1,000 Scholarship pursuing a Technical Certification in Energy Technology at Ivy Tech Community College: PAULINE LUTTON Achievements: National Honor Society, Technical Honor Society, MCJROTC (Titles held – Cadet Sergeant, Cadet 2nd Leiutenant, and Company Executive Officer). She has been actively involved with Jobs For America’s Graduates, and community service & fundrais-ers for Salavation Army (Stuff A Bus), Dunebrook Dragon Boat Races, and the Drum and Bugle Corp Competition. She is passion-ate about reaching her goal of being the first to graduate in her fam-ily, AND serving the community by becoming an electrical engineer and opening her own business one day.

$1,000 Scholarship pursuing Bachelor’s Degree in Chemistry at Purdue University (West Lafayette) : TED TOBIAS Achievements: National Honor Society, Student of the Month (freshman year), Perfect Attendance (freshman & sophomore years), Academic Decathalon All Conference, and Varsity Golf. His community service includes working for a local food pantry, serving at his church for seven years, and assisting at the local Soup and Salad Bar. Scott shared a sto-ry with us about how he was a VERY shy child , especially around large groups, but he decided to participate in one local 8th grade spelling bee where battling his nerves, he WON 1st place. He went on to compete at the Regional level and WON there also. He went all the way to the

Scripps National Spelling Bee and realized he had conquered his fears and gained the social confi-dence needed to successfully live his life.

$1,000 Scholarship pursuing Bachelor’s Degree in Pharmacy at Purdue University (West Lafayette) : MIKINNA GARZELLA Achievements: National Honor Society, National Society of High School Scholars, World Languages Honor Society, ranked in the top 30 stu-dents all four years of high school, Academic Superbowl Team, and Choraliers. She has been actively involved serving her community tu-toring at the Boys & Girls Club, participating in several mission trips, and serving through the Interact Club (nursing homes volunteer & or-ganizing various fundraising efforts.) Mikinna views challenging situa-

tions as an opportunity to learn and grow, which will surely lead to future successes.

$1,000 Scholarship pursuing Bachelor’s Degree in Pre-Law at Grand Valley State University (Michigan) : SCOTT COOPER Achievements: Principal’s Honor Roll, National Honor Society, “Outstanding Sophomore Student” award, Varsity Football (Team Captain), and Varsity Basketball (Senior Leader). He’s an accom-plished musician earning the top spot of “First Chair Violin” for the LaPorte High School Symphony Orchestra. His community service activities include assisting at the Salvation Army, teaching youth at basketball camps, and working as a referee for Pop Warner Football. Scott strives to be a positive influence on people around him, and make the most of opportunities that come his way.

$1,000 Scholarship pursuing Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engi-neering with a minor in Aerospace Engineering at Purdue University (West Lafayette) : RISHI VERMA Achievements: Principal’s Honor Roll, National Honor Society, Varsity Swimming, Leadership LaPorte County, Fishing Club, and Tennis. He is also an active 4-year member of the Robotics Team. He has been involved in several community service activities including the design and construction of a “sensory” room for special-needs students, coor-dinating food drives, assisting with the school recycling program, tu-toring, and assisting at the local soup kitchen. Awards in Math, Sci-ence, Technical Education, and Professionalism. His passion is flying and his goal is to one day be an Aerospace Engineer.
