ENGLISH LENTEN MISSION

The Mission Lenten Retreat will begin on Sat-urday, March 16 and will end on Wednesday, March 20, people of all ages are invited to participate. The retreat will be conducted by Fr. Robert Fedek.

During the week of March 11 Fr. Waldemar, and Fr. Marian Furca will be attending a Lenten Re-treat with the Redemptorist Congregation. This retreat is of great importance since it would help them recharge their spiritual energy to guide us during this Lent season. Hence, from March 11 to March 15 we will not be celebrating our customary morning Masses; however, the Church will be open during the usual morning times for all our parishioners and friends to pray.

We thank you in advance for your comprehension.

The Stations of the Cross will be prayed in English every Friday dur-ing Lent after the 7:30 A.M. Mass. The prayers that will be used can be found in the missalette.

En aquel tiempo, Jesús, lleno del Espíritu Santo, regresó del Jordán y conducido por el mismo Espíritu, se internó en el desierto, donde permaneció du-rante cuarenta días y fue tentado

por el demonio. No comió nada en aquellos días, y cuando se completaron, sintió hambre. Entonces el diablo le di-jo: "Si eres el Hijo de Dios, dile a esta piedra que se convierta en pan". Jesús le contestó: "Está escrito: No sólo de pan vive el hombre". Después lo llevó el diablo a un monte elevado y en un instante le hizo ver todos los reinos de la tierra y le dijo: "A mí me ha sido entregado todo el poder y la gloria de estos reinos, y yo los doy a quien quiero. Todo esto será tuyo, si te arrodillas y me adoras". Je-sús le respondió: "Está escrito: Adorarás al Señor, tu Dios, y a él sólo servirás". Entonces lo llevó a Jerusalén, lo puso en la parte más alta del templo y le dijo: "Si eres el Hijo de Dios, arrójate desde aquí, porque está escrito: Los án-geles del Señor tienen órdenes de cuidarte y de soste-nerte en sus manos, para que tus pies no tropiecen con las piedras". Pero Jesús le respondió: "También está escrito: No tentarás al Señor, tu Dios". Concluidas las tentaciones, el diablo se retiró de él, hasta que llegara la hora.

El desierto, lugar simbólico de prueba y en-cuentro con Dios. Jesús se retiró al desierto para orar y prepararse para su misión. La experiencia del desierto nos muestra la evidencia de la fragilidad de nuestra vida de fe. El desierto es carencia y prueba, nos abre a la realidad de nuestra pobreza. Pero también el desierto es lugar privilegiado de encuentro con Dios. Tenemos mie-do a entrar en nuestro interior, sentimos pavor ante el silencio. No queremos arriesgarnos, pues puede surgir la prueba o la tentación….Sin embargo el exponerse a una prueba es lo que hace progresar al deportista o al estu-diante.

Las tentaciones de Jesús en el desierto son las nuestras.

- El hambre, que simboliza todas las reivindica-ciones del cuerpo.

- La necesidad de seguridad, aunque sea al precio de perjudicar al prójimo.

- La sed de poder, el terrible instinto de domina-ción.

Como cada año nuestro Pastor, P. Waldemar y P. Mario estarán participando en un retiro de Cuaresma con su Congregación. Por lo tanto a partir de 11 de marzo al 15 de marzo las Misas de 7:30 a.m. y 8:15 a.m. no se

estarán celebrando. Pero la Iglesia se abrirá durante el horario regular para que nuestros feligreses puedan orar.

Wielki Post W całym Kościele w Wielkim Poście od-bywały się nauki, które dawał kandydatom do przyjęcia Chrztu świętego sam miejsco-wy biskup. On także przeprowadzał końco-wy egzamin i uroczyście udzielał tego sa-kramentu w noc wielkanocną przed świtem pamiątki Zmartwychwstania Pańskiego

wobec całej wspólnoty kościelnej. Do dziś zaleca się, by chrzest osób dorosłych odbywał się właśnie w Wigilię Pas-chalną i był poprzedzony tzw. skrutyniami, odbywającymi się na przestrzeni Wielkiego Postu. W okresie Wielkiego Postu, który jest czasem pokuty i nawrócenia, Kościół, przypominając słowa Jezusa, propo-nuje trzy drogi przybliżania się do Boga: post, jałmużnę i modlitwę. Liturgia tego okresu jest dość wyciszona. Domi-nującym kolorem szat liturgicznych jest fiolet. Z obrzędów Mszy świętej znika uroczysty hymn "Chwała na wysokości Bogu" (śpiewany jedynie w czasie przypadających w Wiel-kim Poście uroczystości, np. św. Józefa - 19 marca, czy Zwiastowania Pańskiego - 25 marca) oraz radosna aklama-cja "Alleluja" (nawet w uroczystości i święta) śpiewana przed odczytaniem fragmentu Ewangelii (zastępuje ją akla-macja "Chwała Tobie, Królu wieków" albo "Chwała To-bie, Słowo Boże"). Zakazane jest przyozdabianie ołtarza kwiatami, zaś gra na instrumentach muzycznych dozwolo-na jest tylko w celu podtrzymania śpiewu. Z rzadka także odzywają się dzwony. Jedynym wyjątkiem od tych ostat-nich zastrzeżeń jest IV Niedziela Wielkiego Postu, zwana Niedzielą Laetare. W okresie Wielkiego Postu zabroniony jest udział w zabawach. Organizuje się także zwykle kilku-dniowe rekolekcje, które mają pomóc w dobrym przeżyciu tego czasu. W wielu kościołach zachował się zwyczaj usta-wiania krzyża, przy którym można klęknąć i ucałować ra-ny Chrystusa. Zwykle stoją przy nim świece i kwiaty.

Nabożeństwa Wielkopostne Zachęcamy i zapraszamy do udziału w nabożeństwach wielkopostnych. Droga Krzyżowa i Msza Święta w języku polskim będzie w każdy piątek Wielkiego Postu o godz. 7-ej wieczorem z wyjątkiem 15 marca. Droga Krzyżowa w języku angielskim będzie w każdy piątek Wielkiego Postu po Mszy Św. o godz. 7:50 rano. Droga Krzyżowa w języku hiszpańskim będzie w piątek lub we środę Wielkiego Postu. Nabożeństwo Gorzkich Żali będzie w każdą niedzielę Wielkiego Postu przed Mszą św. o godz. 10:00.

Zapraszamy serdecznie wszystkich para-fian do uczestniczenia w rekolekcjach wiel-kopostnych, które rozpoczniemy w Trzecią Niedzielę Wielkiego Postu (23/24 marca). Potrwają one do środy 27 marca. I Niedziela Wielkiego Postu Jezus pełen Ducha Świętego powrócił znad Jordanu i czterdzieści dni przebywał w Duchu na pustyni, gdzie był kuszony przez diabła. Nic w owe dni nie jadł, a po ich upływie poczuł głód. Rzekł Mu wtedy diabeł: „Jeśli jesteś Synem Bożym, powiedz temu kamieniowi, żeby się stał chlebem”. Odpowiedział mu Jezus: „Napisane jest: »Nie samym chlebem żyje człowiek«. Wówczas wyprowadził Go w górę, pokazał Mu w jednej chwili wszystkie kró-lestwa świata i rzekł diabeł do Niego: „Tobie dam potęgę i wspania-łość tego wszystkiego, bo mnie są poddane i mogę je odstąpić, komu chcę. Jeśli więc upadniesz i oddasz mi pokłon, wszystko będzie Twoje”. Lecz Jezus mu odrzekł: „Napisane jest: »Panu, Bogu swemu, będziesz oddawał pokłon i Jemu samemu służyć będziesz«”. Zaprowadził Go też do Jerozolimy, postawił na naroż-niku świątyni i rzekł do Niego: „Jeśli jesteś Synem Bożym, rzuć się stąd w dół. Jest bowiem napisane: »Aniołom swoim rozkaże o To-bie, żeby Cię strzegli«, i »na rękach nosić Cię będą, byś przypad-kiem nie uraził swej nogi o kamień«”. Lecz Jezus mu odparł: „Powiedziano: »Nie będziesz wystawiał na próbę Pana, Boga swe-go«”. Gdy diabeł dokończył całego kuszenia, odstąpił od Niego aż do czasu.

Łk 4,1-13

Wyrusz na pustynię Jezus ... czterdzieści dni przebywał w Duchu na pustyni, gdzie był kuszony przez diabła?. Dlaczego pustynia? Pustynia to wolność, ponieważ jest tak surowa . Pustynia to cisza i spokój od wielu niepotrzebnych rzeczy. Pustynia to doświadczenie ubóstwa człowieka, który znajduje się przed Bogiem. Trzeba wiele odwagi aby wybrać pustynię. Dzisiejszy człowiek boi się pustyni, ponieważ boi się ciszy.

Jeżeli dobrze się zastanowimy, to dojdziemy do wniosku, że potrzeba hałasu jest symptomem strachu, nie rozwiązanych problemów, niechęcią do zamyślenia, refleksji. Dlatego też dzisiejsza młodzież, i nie tylko, ucieka tak często do hałaśliwej i niezrozumiałej muzyki. Nie umie znaleźć się w oazie ciszy. Chrystus Pan szuka pustyni: nikt, tak jak On nie mógł odczuwać ciężaru życia ludzkiego, zubożonego brakiem Boga. Jezus odczuwał dystans między człowiekiem i Bogiem, który został sprowokowany przez grzech. Dlatego też tak często Jezus szukał chwil ciszy i skupienia. Ghandi pewnego dnia powiedział: Im więcej upływa czasu, tym bardziej przekonuję się, że nie umiem być szczęśliwy bez ciszy, bez modlitwy". Zróbmy dzisiaj rachunek sumienia: my i cisza; cisza w czasie modlitwy; chwile ciszy we Mszy św.

First Sunday of Lent Luke 4:1-13

In the desert, Jesus is tempted by the devil. Background on the Gospel Read-ing In each of the three Syn-optic Gospels, after his baptism, Jesus is reported to have spent forty days in the desert, fasting

and praying. In Luke and in Matthew, the devil presents three temptations to Jesus. The devil tempts Jesus to use his power to appease his hunger, he offers Jesus all the kingdoms of the world if Jesus will worship him, and he tempts Jesus to put God's promise of protection to the test. In each case, Jesus resists, citing words from Scripture to rebuke the devil's temp-tation. Each temptation that Jesus faces offers insight into the spirituality we hope to develop as we keep the forty days of the Season of Lent. We can trust God to provide for our material needs. We worship God because God alone has do-minion over us and our world. We can trust God to be faithful to his promises. Jesus' rejection of the devil's temptations shows that he will not put God to the test. Grounding himself on the Word and authority of Scripture, Jesus rebukes the devil by his confidence in God's protection and faithfulness. This Gospel highlights for us one of the central themes of the Season of Lent. We are dependent upon God for all that we have and all that we are. Anything that leads us to reject this dependency or to distrust its sufficiency, is a temp-tation from the devil. Luke ends his report of Jesus' temptation in the desert by noting that the devil departs for a time. The implication is that the devil will return. Jesus knows that he will be tempted again in the Garden of Gethsemane. The depth of Jesus' trust in God is shown most fully when Jesus rejects the temptation to turn away from the task God has given to him. Jesus' final rebuke of the devil is his sacrifice on the Cross. Jesus' responses to the temptations of the devil teach us how we can respond to temptation. As we start our journey through Lent, this Sunday's Gospel calls us to adopt the same confidence that Jesus had in the face of temptation: God's word alone will suffice, God's promise of protection can be trusted, and God alone is God.

by Joe Paprocki, D.Min. Why do we have a sea-son of Lent? Well the reason that we have Lent is real-

ly because we have Easter. Easter of course is the celebration of new life from death and what a perfect time to celebrate Baptism. So we have Lent because people are preparing to be baptized at the Easter vigil. And these last 40 days of their preparation before Easter are so intense that we as a commu-nity journey with them and prepare to renew our Baptism with them. Why is Lent 40 days?

Well the reason that Lent is 40 days is because 40 is a biblically symbolic number. The Israelites wander the desert for 40 years. Jesus was tempted in the desert for 40 days and 40 nights. So 40 symbolizes a significant amount of time dur-ing which ones faith is tested and strengthened. Why do we start Lent by wearing ashes? Ashes remind us of our mortality. After all, that’s what we turn into when we die. And when we come face to face with our mortality, we tend to become more willing to get our lives in order and focus on what’s really important. It’s kind of like Ebenezer Scrooge facing up to his own death and deciding to mend his ways before it’s too late. Well in the same way, we wear ashes in the shape of a cross on our fore-heads to symbolize our willingness to change, to die to sin, and to be born to new life in Baptism. Why do we give up things during Lent? Well we give things up during Lent as another way of practicing discipline. By exercising self-control, we can free our minds from desires for material possessions and pleasures, and focus on the true happiness that can only come from faith and Jesus Christ. So we give up things that are ob-viously unhealthy for us such as smoking or excessive eating and drinking, or swearing, and things like that. But we can also give up things that aren’t bad in and of themselves but that clutter up our lives such as watching TV, listening to music, shopping, and so on. With less clutter, we can focus on what’s really important, our relationship with Jesus. Why do we give up meat on Fridays? Well, meat is a symbol of luxury and wealth. When you think about it, we talk about getting a job that pays enough to put meat on the table. So to abstain from meat is a sacrifice for most people, a way of doing without and living more simply. Now of course, if you’re already a vegetarian then you should seek some other form of sacrifice, abstaining from a certain food that brings you great pleasure. And of course, giving up meat is not an excuse to pig out on lobster.The idea is to eat simply. Finally, Jesus died on a Friday and so Fridays are seen as a day of penance and that’s why we abstain from meat on Fridays. Why is purple the color of Lent? Purple is always been associated with sorrow and mourning. And during Lent we recall the suffering and death of Jesus. Purple is also the color of royalty and through the death and resurrection of Jesus, we come to recognize him as our King. Why do we pray the Stations of the Cross during Lent? Oh back in the early Church, Christians would make a pilgrimage to the Holy Land to retrace the steps of Jesus on His way to the cross. And of course as the Church grew and such a pilgrimage became unrealistic for many people, they began to retrace the steps of Jesus on His way to the cross by reflecting on pictures that depicted those scenes. Well during Lent, especially on Fridays when we reflect on the crucifixion of Jesus, praying on the stations of the cross has become a time-honored devotion. Is Lent a sad or somber time? Well interestingly enough, the liturgies of Lent con-tinually refer to this as a joyful season so Lent is not a sad of somber time but it is however a sober time. The joy we expe-rienced during Lent is an eyes-wide-open joy. A joy that rec-ognizes and embraces the suffering of the cross that leads to the joy of the resurrection.
