‘Pray for the peace of Jerusalem’
First Sunday of Advent 1 December 2019
Isaiah 2.1-5 Isaiah’s vision of a world at peace based on a common faith, at a time when Israel was being threatened with violence. The vision also appears in Micah (4.1-5), a contemporary of Isaiah.
Romans 13.11-14 Paul urges the Christians in Rome to prepare for the imminent return of Christ by adopting not just hopeful anticipation, but a Christ-like moral character.
Matthew 24.36-44 St Matthew’s account of the ‘Little Apocalypse,’ which closely follows earlier Jewish writings, depicts the time when Christ will come to establish God’s reign. For St Matthew, this would be at an unexpected time.

psalm 122(8am service)I was glad when they said to me, ‘Let us go to the house of the Lord.’And now our feet are standing within your gates, O Jerusalem;Jerusalem, built as a city that is at unity in itself.Thither the tribes go up, the tribes of the Lord, as is decreed for Israel,to give thanks to the name of the Lord. For there are set the thrones of judgement, the thrones of the house of David. O pray for the peace of Jerusalem: ‘May they prosper who love you.‘Peace be within your walls and tranquillity within your palaces.’For my kindred and companions’ sake, I will pray that peace be with you.For the sake of the house of the Lord our God, I will seek to do you good.

Advent wreath Prayer Blessed are you, sovereign Lord, God of our ancestors:to you be praise and glory for ever. You called the patriarchs to live by the light of faith and to journey in the hope of your promised fulfilment. May we be obedient to your call and be ready and watchful to receive your Christ, a lamp to our feet and a light to our path; for you are our light and our salvation. Blessed be God for ever.

Junior Church Christmas initiative 2019 IMPORTANT UPDATE
Thank you for the many donations of items and money for both of our initiatives to date. Keep on collecting and donating Our first charity is Bromley Homeless Shelter. It is open for Christmas and throughout the winter months. Our plan is to collect and wrap 12 shoe boxes and fill them with toiletries, underwear, socks, nibbles, scarves, gloves and hats to give to those who are in the shelter over Christmas. We will continue this initiative until the shelter closes.
Secondly we will collect and wrap 10 to 12 shoe boxes and fill them with toys, books, stationery, chocolate and sweets for Bromley Children Project which helps disadvantaged families with advice and support including parenting courses.
Finally - Bromley Brighter Beginnings. We managed to deliver 6 children’s boxes this week to go in the hampers that the charity is making up for the Bromley and Croydon Women’s Aid Domestic Violence Refuge. They were very gratefully received. Many thanks. intercessions For those who are sick:
collect Almighty God,give us grace to cast away the works of darknessand to put on the armour of light, now in the time of this mortal life,in which your Son Jesus Christ came to us in great humility; that on the last day, when he shall come again in his glorious majestyto judge the living and the dead,we may rise to the life immortal;through him who is alive and reigns with you,in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen
