AFFIRMATION OF FAITH The Shorter Catechism (7.001-2; adapted)

Q. 1. What is the chief end of humankind?

Humankind’s chief end is to glorify God, and to enjoy God forever.

Q. 2. What rule has God given to direct us how we may glorify and enjoy

him?

The Word of God which is contained in the Scriptures of the Old and

New Testaments is the only rule to direct us how we may glorify and

enjoy him.

*HYMN “Lord, Who throughout These Forty Days” p.166 PASTORAL PRAYER AND THE LORD’S PRAYER

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen.

Order of Worship

1st Sunday in Lent

11:00 a.m.

We Gather

A quiet time of prayer and preparation for worship.

Everlasting God, you have made us for yourself, so that our hearts are restless until they rest in you. Give us purity of heart and strength of purpose, that no selfish passion may hinder us from knowing your will, no weakness keep us from doing it; that in your light we may see light clearly, and in your service find perfect freedom; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

INTROIT “Christians, We Have Met to Worship”

WELCOME AND ANNOUNCEMENTS Dr. Cynthia M. Benz

CALL TO WORSHIP Chris Ramsey

Leader: The season of Lent sets us on a journey.

Ministers: The journey begins in the wilderness.

Leader: We follow the way of Jesus, who faced trials, trouble, temptation, and testing.

Ministers: Like Jesus, we are not alone. The Holy Spirit is with us. God’s Word is on our lips.

Leader: Our call is to trust in God alone, to do God’s will in all things.

Ministers: For even as we go into the wilderness, God brings us through and out of the wilderness.

Leader: Let us be mindful in our worship of God as we begin our Lenten journey together.

*HYMN “Our God, Our Help in Ages Past” p. 687

*CALL TO CONFESSION

*PRAYER OF CONFESSION

O God, our Refuge and Fortress, forgive us when we fail to trust in you. We fall to temptation; we are swayed by false words; we speak false words of our own. We choose our ease and comfort over your demanding claims upon us and upon the world. In turning from you, we settle for less than the abundant generosity you intend. Forgive us, we pray. Do not let us be put to shame, O God. Hear us as we call to you and show us your salvation…(moments of silence)

*ASSURANCE OF PARDON

Leader: Know that in Jesus Christ, our sins are forgiven!

Ministers: Thanks be to God!

*RESPONSE TO FORGIVENESS

“Gloria Patri”

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son and to the Holy Ghost. As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. Amen.
