The Journey

According to the biblical narrative in the Hebrew scriptures (to be more precise, from the second creation story

in Genesis), there was a time when humanity lived in a protective bubble, a fortified enclave offering safety and

security, save for the ever-dreaded serpent's temptation. In Eden, life in the first nudist colony was all kicks and

giggles, no need for even a fig leaf! But, alas, that was not to be a permanent fix, Humanity's need to grow and

develop, to evolve as the image of God, caused a deep hungering, a yearning for knowledge, wisdom that could

only germinate with a maturing intellect, an integrated personality, and a faith that matched a broadening world

view. Each and every one of us continues that legacy: the good, the bad, and the ugly of Adam and Eve's big

adventure. We are always in process, never fully arriving at a destination in this life. It is always about the

journey!

Happy are those whose transgression is forgiven, whose sin is covered by the Holy One.

Let the faithful pray to the One who is our hiding place, protecting us, surrounding us with glad

cries of deliverance.

For those who acknowledge their sin and confess their transgressions to the Holy Oneare forgiven their guilt.

God of all human capacity, we have gathered in this sacred space to worship the Lord our God, to

rejoice in the Holy, to serve the One who fills us with good things and makes us wise beyond our

wildest imagination; today, we long for the very word that comes from the mouth of God; surround

us with Your steadfast love and lead us in the way You would have us to go; all this we pray through

Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the holy and still speaking Spirit, one God,

forever and ever.

God will instruct us, teaching us the way we should go, counseling us while watchingover us in times of trouble.

Led by our proclivity to make poorer choices, that which we call sin, we wander into thewasteland of wrong-doing. We hunger for more and more, and feel increasingly empty.We seek power, especially over others, but often only doing harm. By our choices, weworship the false gods of success, wealth, and spectacle. Have mercy on us, God of love,and forgive us for the power we give to the temptation in our lives. Help us to become asvulnerable as Jesus, for in that vulnerability, we find the humility to trust You in allthings; in that trust, we discover the grace which sets us free from the grasp of evil; inthat freedom, we can leave the wilderness behind, in order to follow Jesus in this life,and into the next.

We are easily seduced by the temptations all around us. But if we are willing to trust God and offer

our confessions, God is quick to forgive us and fill us with hope. In the silence and stillness of these

moments, let us confess before the Holy.

How Blest Those Whose Transgressions

The Lord God took the man and put him in the garden of Eden to till it and keep it. And the Lord Godcommanded the man, “You may freely eat of every tree of the garden; but of the tree of the knowledge ofgood and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it you shall die.” Now the serpent was morecrafty than any other wild animal that the Lord God had made. Therefore, just as sin came in to the world through one human being and death came through sin, and so death

spread to all because all have sinned—sin was indeed in the world before the law, but sin is not reckoned when

there is no law. Yet death reigned from Adam to Moses, even over those whose sins were not like the

transgression of Adam, who is a type of the one who was to come. But the free gift is not like the trespass. For if

many died through the trespass of one, much more surely have the grace of God and the free gift in the grace of

the one person Jesus Christ abounded for many. And the free gift is not like the effect of the one person’s sin. For

the judgment following one trespass brought condemnation, but the free gift following many trespasses brings

justification. If, because of the trespass of one, death reigned through that one, much more surely will those who

receive the abundance of grace and the free gift of righteousness reign in life through the one person, Christ

Jesus. Therefore just as the trespass of one led to condemnation for all, so the act of righteousness of one leads to

justification and life for all. For just as by the disobedience of one many were made sinners, so by the obedience

of one many will be made righteous.

Once When We Were Naked (and Unashamed)

The Gospel of the Lord. Thanks be to God!

Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. He fasted forty days and forty

nights, and afterwards He was famished. The tempter came and said to Him, “If you are the Son of God,

command these stones to become loaves of bread.” But Jesus answered, “It is written, ‘One does not live by

bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.’” Then the devil took Him to the holy city and

placed Him on the pinnacle of the temple, saying to Him, “If You are the Son of God, throw Yourself down; for it

is written, ‘God will command the angels concerning You,’ and ‘On their hands they will bear You up, so that You

will not dash Your foot against a stone.’” Jesus said to him, “Again it is written, ‘Do not put the Lord your God to

Too often, we give in to the temptation to keep everything for ourselves. But You would have usnotice those who hunger for hope, as well as bread; those who are caught in the injustices of theworld; those who struggle to find themselves. And in noticing, we become generous and loving, evenas we have been graced by our brother and friend, Jesus of Nazareth, in whose name we pray.

A Mighty Fortress Is Our God

glorious. The old satanic foe has sworn to work us woe! With craft and dreadful might, he arms himself to fight.

On earth he has no equal. No strength of ours can match his might! We would be lost, rejected. But now a

champion comes to fight, whom God himself elected. You ask who this may be: the Lord of hosts is He!

Christ Jesus, mighty Lord, God’s only Son adored. He holds the field victorious. Though hordes of

devils fill the land all threatening to devour us, we tremble not, unmoved we stand; they can-

not overpower us. This world's prince may rage, in fierce war engage. He is doomed to fail;

God’s judgment must prevail! One little word subdues him. God’s word forever shall abide,

no thanks to foes, who fear it; for God Himself fights by our side with weapons of the

Spirit. Were they to take our house, goods, honor, child or spouse, though life

be wrenched away, they cannot win the day. The kingdom’s ours forever.

Holy, Holy, Holy Lord

THE SERVICE OF HOLY COMMUNION

You held nothing back, gardner of grace, as the spirit led creation into the hinterlands of

nothingness: spreading rich soil in the valleys, planting seedlings and flower bulbs, making

mountains from river clay, sprinkling water over everything. Mornings came in Eden's beauty, all

that wonder and goodness given for Your children, but we listened to evil's whispers, believing

lies so easily told. Like a crew launching a boat to rescue those who are adrift, prophets came,

counseling us to let go of our stubbornness and return to Your side, but with our "eyes wide shut,"

we followed that path which took us away from the middle of the garden. So you sent Jesus to us,

to call us back to You, a free gift of grace for all.

With the faithful who have gone before us, with companions through this journey today, we offer

glad songs of deliverance:glad songs of deliverance:

As we begin the journey to Jerusalem, following Jesus, as we would choose to embrace His suffering,

we speak of that free gift called faith:

You alone are holy, the hope of our lives, and Christ Jesus is Your blessed righteousness. When we

got what we wanted in knowing both good and evil, He came, so we might receive what we needed

most—Your grace. When we left the garden to enter the deserts of temptation, He came to show us

the path back to Your heart. When we had given control of our lives to sin and to death, He came to

break their hold on us in His resurrection.

You hold nothing back from us as the Spirit comes to rest on the gifts of the bread and the cup, so

that those gathered might be fed. Like Your heart, the bread is broken, so we might be made whole

and, by our healing, go forth to bring hope to those around us. The cup is poured out so we might

be filled with Your grace, and go out into the world to empty ourselves for others. And when our

journeys in and out of the wildernesses of the world are ended, You will gather us around the great

Feast of the Lamb in Your realm, where we will sing glad songs of joy to You, God in beloved faith

community, Holy in One.

NEXT Sunday, March 12, 2017, following the morning worship service, the first Town Hall Meeting of

2017 will be held in Hospitality Hall. At that time, Dr. Shirley will give a brief overview of the Open

and Affirming process about to be engaged in by our congregation. Last spring, it was determined that

the members would like to explore this possibility as a congregation, and the time has now come to do

so. There is a desperate need for an openly hospitable, welcoming, and inclusive church in this area.

The SouthShore Church is uniquely situated to meet this need. As Dr. Shirley has stated several times,

"This is who this church has always been from its very inception. The Open and Affirming process for

us will be about finding handles for articulating our vision, our mission and ministry as beloved faith

community. We simply need to learn how to preach what we already practice!" Please plan to

participate at the various Town Hall meetings coming your way, and be willing to voice your opinions

and tell your personal stories.

8:30 AM ~ HOSPITALITY HALL ~ BREAKFAST: $12.00 Per PersonThe Easter early service will begin at 8:30 AM. Following worship (around 9:00 a.m.), a catered

breakfast will be provided by Suncoast Catering. The menu will include: Frittatas (spinach &

mushroom or ham & cheese), bacon, sausage, fried potatoes, fruit cup, biscuits and gravy, pastry tray,

orange and tomato juices, coffee and tea. Reservations with your check can be made in the Church

Office Monday through Friday; or, you may attach your check (payable to SSUCC for "Easter

Breakfast"), to this form and leave it in the Offering Plate.

EASTER MEMORIAL LILIESYou may purchase a Memorial Lily to be displayed in our Chancel on Easter morning. The cost is $9.00

per plant. Simply attach your check (payable to SSUCC for "Easter Flowers"), to this form and leave it

in the Offering Plate.

April 20 and 21, 2017 ~ 8:00 to 1:00 p.m. ~ Hospitality HallBeginning on Monday, April 17, you may bring in any of your household goods, antiques, collectibles,

toys, furniture and more to the Hospitality Hall in preparation for the sale on Thursday and Friday.
