4th Sunday in Ordinary Time, Year B

REFLECTION BY FR. JUDE EMUNEMU

I KNOW WHO YOU ARE!

One thing that really stood out to me in today’s gospel reading is the confession made by the man with the unclean spirit: “I know who you are – the Holy One of God.” It is important to point out here that it was not the man himself who was under the demonic possession who made this confession but in fact, the unclean spirit that possessed the man. The unclean spirit not only acknowledged the power that is at work in Jesus by saying: “Have you come to destroy us?” but in fact, recognizes the true identity of Jesus by saying: “I know who you are – the Holy One of God.” This confession of faith made by the evil one as a matter of fact challenges us. And here is the question: If an unclean spirit could recognize Jesus and confess him as the Holy One of God, how about us? How well, do we who have been washed clean in the Sacrament of Baptism and who share daily at the Eucharistic table recognize the Real Presence of Jesus in the Holy Eucharist? Every time we step forward to receive Christ in Holy Communion, what does that holy moment mean to us? Are we able to say to Jesus by making a humble confession of faith: “I know who you are – the Holy One of God?” As Eucharistic people, how deep is our knowledge of the Eucharistic Lord? This Year has been declared as the Year of the Eucharist and Honoring St. Joseph. The primary objective of the Eucharistic year is so that we grow in conscious awareness of the Real Presence of Jesus in the Holy Eucharist and to enter into a profound intimacy of love with him. St. Joseph, the Guardian of the Holy Family cherished the Real Presence of Jesus in their home of Nazareth. Jesus who comes to us in the Holy Eucharist, does not come to destroy us; but he comes to give us life, to liberate from the yoke of Satan, the father of sin, to heal, comfort us and to assure us of his real presence. Every time, we receive Jesus in Holy Communion are we able to hear him rebuke that sin in us, that selfishness, wicked thoughts, hateful feelings toward others: “Quiet! Come out of him!” Jesus says: “I have come that they may have life and have that life even more abundantly” (cf. John 10:10). Beloved, Jesus wants to set us free from everything that is not of God that lies within us; so that we can live in the true freedom of God’s children and so that like St. Paul in the second reading, we may adhere “to the Lord without distraction.” Lord Jesus, deepen our faith in your Eucharistic presence so that we may come to know who you truly are to us – the Holy One of God. Amen.

After much thought and consideration, we are sad to announce that Cajun Fest 2021 will not take place. Please know this decision was a difficult one to make, but we want to ensure everyone’s safety. Although we are not able to have our usual festival fun with great food and music due to the rise in Covid cases, we are working behind the scenes to carry out some of our popular fundraising opportunities such as the calendar raffle, sign sponsorships, and auction. Monthly Calendar Raffle Our calendar raffle will still take place in April & May, 2021. Tickets will be available for sale starting March 8th, 2021. We will have incentives for the student’s homeroom classes, more details to follow. Signs/Sponsorship We are also going to display sponsorship signs on the fence. If you are interested in this, please download our sponsorship form from vol.org/sponsorship. Auction We are going to have our annual auction, just a little differently. On Saturday, April 17th, 2021 you will be able to come during the grade level scheduled time to make live bids. The winners will be announced live through Facebook on Sunday, April 18th, 2021. We thank you for your continued support. Tara and Jarrod Rodriguez Brandy and Ashley Gisclair VOL Cajun Fest 2020 & 2021 Co-Chairs
