First Prize in Popular Public Speaking Competition

O n Thursday 3 May, Jesse Cescatti-McFarlane (Year 10)

travelled to Norwood School, in the company of a lively

team of supporters, to participate in Lambeth’s Regional Final of

the annual and prestigious Jack Petchey “Speak Out”

Competition.

Jesse was up against twenty other students who, like he, had

been selected at “Speak Out” workshops held in secondary

schools across Lambeth earlier in the year. All speeches were to

be only three minutes long and were marked on three criteria:

content, delivery and structure. Jesse’s powerful speech, entitled

To everyone’s absolute delight, Jesse was

crowned the winner, beating extremely

fierce competition and placing him in the

top 0.2% of young public speakers in

London and Essex. What an incredible

achievement!

So, what’s next? Jesse awaits news of

whether or not he scored highly enough

to rank in the top fifteen in the UK, which

is what he needs to get into the Grand

Final. Come on Jesse, we’re all rooting for

you!

Jack Petchey’s “Speak Out” Challenge is the world’s biggest youth speaking event! Thanks to funding from the

speaking charity.

Year 11 Visit to City University

L ast week 25 of our Year 11 black Caribbean students visited the City, University of

London, who hosted a specialist maths tuition day for students with the additional

purpose of raising aspirations for them.

The university had breakfast waiting for us upon our arrival, which was a lovely surprise for

our students. The day involved an introduction in to university life followed by maths

tuition from university undergraduates. Our students seemed to really enjoy the day.

Thank you to The City University for hosting this day and to our students for being great

ambassadors of The Elmgreen School.

After the day, students felt very confident about gaining a GCSE in maths as well as gaining

a valuable insight into the difference between studying at school and studying at university. The students also said

they were now much more aware of career opportunities linked to maths and the benefits of attending university.

“Firstly, I was impressed by the attitude

of the students, who were very keen to

absorb as much information as possible,

asking question both on the topics and

on the life as a Maths university

student.

Secondly, I found them with a strong

foundation of Maths knowledge, and

from my experience I could see a lot of potential in them, especially Pelle who see the answers very quickly,

with the easiest approach and capable to see outside of the box. I would really like these students to receive

further assistance to achieve the maximum potential.

Finally, I think their leading teacher who was present was very

sociable and could see a good relationship with his students.

Hope you can run these events with them in the future, even

though most likely I would not be present as I am graduating

this summer.”

“It was a pleasure to work with the pupils today and refreshing

to see such high levels of motivation amongst the group. I

definitely saw the impact that this one day has had on them, in

terms of understanding certain topics in greater depth and their

personal confidence in approaching questions.”

Library News—Phoenix Finale 2018

L ast Thursday sixteen of our students attended The

Lambeth Phoenix Book Award. The Award differs from

many book prizes, in that it is the students, rather than a

remote panel of judges, who are the driving force.

Participating students are responsible for selecting a shortlist

of four books; reading, reviewing and discussing these books

and voting for a winner. To take part effectively, students

commit to attending book club regularly, and aim to read all

four titles.

Over 120 students from eight Lambeth schools attended the

finale at Streatham and Clapham High School. The

programme kicked off with a quiz, testing students

knowledge of the four books. As quick as the questions

came, we answered them, and for the second year running,

The Elmgreen School won!

Next it was presentation time, with each school choosing a

book to champion. We chose What not to do when you

turn invisible by Ross Welford and performed a dramatized

alternative ending.

Well done Emily, Baxter, Rayyan, Sylvie and Lysander for performing so imaginatively and even raising a few laughs.

Phoenix Finale 2018…….. continued

After a short break, it was time for the author talks. Both Ross Welford and Ally

Sherrick (author of Black Powder) spoke about what inspires them and gave us

writing tips.

Then it was awards time and Tess and Caelan won prizes for ‘most enthusiastic

participant’ and ‘best review’ for our school.

Finally, to the highlight of the event. The votes had been counted and the winning

author, Christian O’Connell, for Radio Boy, was declared. Sadly, Christian wasn’t able

to make the event, but he sent the following message: “What an honour to win this

from such smart and inspirational kids, thank you. I’ve seen amazing photos and

fellow author Ross Welford said how awesome you were acting some of my book out,

so thanks for your support. I’m just sorry I couldn’t be there as I was defeating evil

warlords who were trying to destroy the Lambeth Book Awards with laser canons

from space. Luckily I did win so it’s all good.”

Although the author wasn’t

our students’ favourite to

win, we didn’t mind. It had

been a fantastically bookish morning and we all agreed we’d

had a great time.

M&G Apprenticeship Insights Event

M&G are hosting an Apprenticeship Insights event aimed at students, parents,

teachers and careers advisers who would like to find out more about M&G's School

Leaver Programmes.

At this event, M&G will discuss Apprenticeship Schemes and the positive impact

they have on individuals, business and the wider community. Guests will also have

an opportunity to learn more about the Investment Management industry and meet current and former

apprentices and Business Managers to gain insight into starting a professional career at M&G.

Want to be a Meteorologist?

Want to be a Meteorologist is a careers information event aimed at young people

aged 14-20 interested in a career in weather and climate. The event takes place on

Saturday 23 June at 10am at the Institute of Physics, Westminster W1B 1NT.

Attendees can hear from some people already working or studying in the field, and

some of the Universities offering undergraduate and postgraduate courses in weather and climate.

All under 18s must be accompanied by a responsible adult who will need to register themselves and then

send an email providing the names of the young people they are accompanying. Unaccompanied young

people will be required to show ID on arrival as proof of age.

This event is free of charge but registration is required to reserve your place. Places are limited and will be

allocated on a first come, first served basis.

There are several shops and cafes nearby where lunch can be purchased.

EY Degree Apprenticeships

Looking for something fun to do over the half term holiday or the summer?

Learn to sail or to kayak at Westminster Boating Base (a short walk from Pimlico tube) for only £15.00. The

Westminster Boating Base (WBB) charity aims to provide experiences and opportunities for young people which aid

personal and social development through participation in watersports so they may fully develop as individuals.

Youth membership is for 10-23yr olds and costs £15.00 per year. This covers:-

After school sailing + kayaking sessions

Sailing tuition as per the RYA Levels 1-3 / Stages 1-3 syllabuses.

Canoeing & Kayaking tuition as per the BC 1-3 Star syllabuses.

Recreational sailing and kayaking sessions for those that are already proficient (minimum ability BC 1 Star

kayak or RYA Level 2 Sailing) including racing and training (and the opportunity to join our squads for the

London Youth Games each year).

Access to away trips

The pricing is intended to make the facilities as accessible as possible to the widest range of people, regardless

of social or financial background.

The membership year runs from 1st April to 31st March the following year.

WBB will gratefully accept any additional donations from those that can afford it. Donations can be made at any
