Prelude Joyful, Joyful, We Adore Thee Beethoven/arr. Mayo Chiming of the Hour Welcome
Introit
God welcomes all, strangers and friends, God’s love is strong and it never ends. (hymn 399)
*Call to Worship (from Psalm 111)
Come, let us give thanks to God with our whole hearts. Glory be to the One whose wonders are to be remembered. The Lord feeds the righteous with truth. God nourishes those who delight in God’s ways. Let us worship God.
*Hymn 403 Open Now Thy Gates of Beauty
*Invitation to Confession
*Prayer of Confession
(silent confession) Gracious and merciful God, we proclaim words of welcome and care for all, but our actions betray us. We seek to satisfy our own wants, while neglecting the needs of others. We are quick to sate our appetites, while ignoring the hunger pangs of our neighbors. Have mercy on us, Lord. Deepen our desire to be your faithful followers, so that our lives may reflect your goodness and grace; through Christ our Lord we pray. Amen.
*Assurance of Forgiveness
*The Peace of Christ
Since God has forgiven us in Christ, let us forgive one another. The peace of the Lord Jesus Christ be with you all. And also with you. Let us share the peace of Christ with one another.

FIRST PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH Oak Ridge, Tennessee
A Congregation of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.)
January 28, 2018 Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time
*Sung Response (hymn 59)
The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; God’s mercies never come to an end. They are new every morning, new every morning; Great is your faithfulness, O Lord, great is your faithfulness.

Anthem For Where Love Is, There Is God Wagner
Come as strangers, come as travelers, for where love is, there is God. Come you poor, you weak, who falter, for where love is, there is God. Song and scripture wed together, bound by faith in sacred Word, sharing peace and consolation, for where love is, there is God. Let us each love one another, for where love is, there is God, and embrace as sister, brother, for where love is, there is God. Heal our hurting, lift our spirits, cease our cold, contentious ways. Spread the grace of love unending, for where love is, there is God. Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia, praise the Lord! Alleluia, alleluia, for where love is, there is God.
Scripture Reading 1 Corinthian 8:1-13
Sermon The Meat of the Matter Sharon Youngs
*Affirmation of Faith (adapted by members of FPC)
We believe in God, the Father Almighty, and in Jesus Christ, His Son, our Lord, and in the Holy Spirit. We seek to know God's will, to walk in God's ways, and to proclaim the Gospel to all people, by our lives as well as by our words. We work and pray for the progress of knowledge, the promotion of justice, the reign of peace, and the realization of human unity in our time. And we look with faith for the triumph of righteousness in our community and in our world. Amen.
Call to Prayer (hymn 451)
Open my eyes, that I may see glimpses of truth thou hast for me. Place in my hands the wonderful key that shall unclasp and set me free. Silently now I wait for thee, ready, my God, thy will to see. Open my eyes; illumine me, Spirit divine!
Prayers of the People - with The Lord’s Prayer (ecumenical) {
Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and forever. Amen.

WORSHIP NOTES
Our opening hymn today was written by Joachim
Neander (1650-1680), a prominent writer of hymn
texts and tunes. He was a German Reformed
(Calvinist) Church theologian and teacher, holding
positions in Heidelburg and Dusseldorf. In 1679,
he became a pastor in Bremen, and died a year
later of tuberculosis.
Please warmly welcome Alex and Julia Cantrell
and their son Jack, and Elaine Wilson. They will
