24 Hours that Changed the World by Adam Hamilton is our new small group study for Lent. Sign up for the small groups will be in The Well. Beginning February 14, the first Sunday in Lent (besides being Valentine’s Day), begins the Lenten Journey for six weeks. It has been said that the Holy land is the fifth Gospel and Adam Hamilton will walk the Via Dolorosa (the Way of Christ) so that we might better understand the story and the sacrifice Jesus Christ made for us, and how His story intersects with our story as the fulcrum of history, B.C. and A.D. attest to this fact. Each participant is invited to buy the book and the devotion that goes along with Adam Hamilton’s DVD lesson. You can buy your own book and devotion at the church office for $6 and $8 dollars. Remember these small groups are an excellent way to invite your friends, neighbors, and coworkers to a study that will deepen their faith and allow them to make new friends and possibly discover First Church as a community of faith that will nurture their faith.

Another opportunity for spiritual growth this season of Lent is to attend the various services we will be offering. To kick off the Lenten Journey, join us for the Ash Wednesday service on February 10, at 7 p.m. Ash Wednesday reminds those in attendance of our mortality. The placement of ashes upon the forehead as the minister says, “You came from dust and to dust you shall return,” is a shock to the system. No one likes to be reminded (especially in our death denying culture) that one day we will die and that our body (slowly or

quickly if we get cremated) will decompose. And, yet, if we can come to grips with our mortality, we can be set free from the fear of death because we believe in the One who conquered death with his Resurrection and promises new life for those who believe in him and become his disciples (John 11:17-27). Lent, is an old English word which means “Spring.” Spring is the time in which living things awake and arise from the death of winter to new life. So it is with Christians who celebrate the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. So it is fitting that we follow Jesus to Jerusalem and focus on the last week of his life to better under-stand the meaning of his death. Thus, I invite you to attend Holy Week services at First Church. On Maundy Thursday, March 24, at 7:00 p.m., we will be celebrating the last meal Jesus had with his disciples. Then on Good Friday at noon, we will have a simple lunch of soup and bread, and then go to the Chapel for a Good Friday service at 12:30 p.m. And for those who want to pray and meditate further on this holy day, we will provide a guided meditation of our Stained Glass windows that focuses on the life of Christ. So you can see there are several opportunities to deepen one’s faith as we enter into this season of Lent.

Grace and Peace, Pastor Brent

Chaplain’s Letter

Souper Bowl of Caring

A Love Story That winter he was filling the pulpit of a Baptist church in Vermont for a few months. On a

cold Sunday morning as the congregation filed past him shaking hands as they departed he asked an elderly widow, “How are you?” Actually he was neither expecting nor caring much about her answer even though he knew she lived alone on welfare in a very small, run-down apartment. She was too thin and quite stooped. She lifted her head to look at him and answered, “As well as can be expected.” That was all. She made her way out into the weather.

While he could be as deaf to a call for help as any of us, he did realize that as things stood at the moment he was all she had in the way of a minister. Now this man was normally a writer. He was an ordained minister, but he was only filling in. He was an author of books. Nevertheless he recognized that, “Every once in a while, if only to keep their hands in, Christians are to be Christs to each other for Christ’s sweet sake.” Reluctantly he made a decision to go visit the old woman. He dreaded it and expected the worst. He expected a long, dreary litany of complaints accompanied by whining and tears. He expected to feel awkward and inadequate. He expected to be bored, hoping to leave as soon as he decently could.

Nothing he expected to happen happened. He felt none of the things he expected to feel. Over the following eight years he visited on many afternoons in every season. Then one year, around Valentine’s Day, she died, and the writer/pastor conducted her funeral before a little group of family and friends. She was a memorable woman and he was homesick.

The writer/minister who fell in love was Frederick Buechner, our fellow seeker. He encourages us to listen to our lives, to be wise, to lift ourselves to ministry for Christ’s sweet sake.

Mary Goodwin, Chaplain

FPC will again host the InterFaith Ministries annual Souper Bowl luncheon on Friday, February 5. All proceeds go to the IFM hunger progra.ms that help the one out of seven families in Wichita that live with food insecurity. Popular chefs from major restaurants and clubs donate their best soups. Area bakers send fresh rolls. Church Women United provide desserts. The bottomless bowls of soup will be served by the Wichita Wagonmasters, who are also preparing some of their famous chili. Souvenir bowls created by area artists and children’s ceramic classes will be available to the first 200 guests. Area musicians will entertain, including Joe Stump, Richard Crowson, and Jonathan Murphy. Tickets at the door are $20.00, but are $15.00 if purchased in advance in the church office.

Plan to bring your lunch bunch between 10:30 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. for a great mid-day meal, while you support a worthy cause. Last year over 500 guests enjoyed the hospitality we provided, and organizers are planning for more attendees this year. Used cookbooks will also be for sale for bargain prices, if you’d like to donate some, bring them to the church office, they will be greatly appreciated!

From the Parish Nurse

Sleep Apnea Sleep apnea is a potentially serious sleep disorder that wreaks havoc on your health. You may have sleep apnea if you snore loudly and experience daytime fatigue even after a full night’s sleep. Sleep apnea occurs when you stop breathing repeatedly during your sleep (sometimes hundreds of times). When your airflow stops during a sleep apnea episode, the oxygen in your blood drops. This signals the brain to respond by briefly disturbing your sleep enough to kick start breathing, which can re-sume with a gasp or choking sound. This every night breathing pattern literally jolts you out of your natural sleeping rhythm. Your body then spends more time in light sleep and less time in the deep restorative sleep necessary for energy, mental sharpness, daytime productivity, and generally good health. Risk Factors for Sleep Apnea:

Overweight Male Over the age of 40 Smoker Gastroesophageal reflux, or GERD Have a large neck size (17 inches or greater in men: 16 inches or greater in women) Nasal obstruction due to a deviated septum, enlarged tonsils, and sinus or allergy problems

Signs and Symptoms of Sleep Apnea:

Chronic and loud snoring almost every night Gasping or choking during sleep Pauses in breathing pattern Waking up feeling short of breath Restless sleep and/or physically acting out drea.ms Daytime sleepiness and fatigue Uncharacteristic irritability and moodiness

Health Effects of Sleep Apnea: High blood pressure Stroke Heart failure, irregular heartbeats, and heart attacks Diabetes Depression Worsening of ADHD Headaches Forgetfulness and difficulty concentrating

If you think you may be experiencing sleep apnea (or your bed partner suspects this condition), con-tact your doctor. A referral to a sleep specialist may order a home based sleep study, using a porta-ble monitor, or an overnight stay at a sleep clinic, to officially diagnose sleep apnea. Treatment will consist of lifestyle changes and/or the use of breathing devices (CPAP-Continuous Positive Airflow Pressure or BPAP-Bi-level Positive Airway Pressure). With treatment, you can control the symp-toms, experience restorative sleep, and start feeling more alert and refreshed each day. And get your health back!

January Economy Corner News Our 2015 sales total is $102,435! December’s total sales were $10,094.42. FPC’s share was $9390.28 and Grace’s was $704.14. days There was a $436.68 decrease in sales over December 2014. This is due to being closed for 7 days during the month because of storms and the holidays. We filled 49 vouchers for basic clothing necessities that was equivalent to $671.25. FPC’s portion of the vouchers equaled $575.00 and Grace’s was $96.25. This year we have filled 877 vouchers that equaled $12,600 worth of basic clothing. The International Refugees who have been relocated to Wichita received 59 of those vouchers. We purchased new back-packs for $600.00 for the Refugee students. The Corner also donated items to 29 various agencies. We used $8000 to purchase 296 winter coats and other articles of winter clothing. Inspired by the success of the 2nd annual “Coat Project” and the super after- Christmas sales on winter wear, we have already purchased 159 coats for 2016’s 3rd annual “Coat Project”. We would like to invite the congregation to also contribute coats. Coat donations may taken to the church office. We are storing the coats in the FPC’s attic and there is lots of space to fill. We are collecting hats, gloves scarves to also store for next winter. We appreciate your generous donations of items and time which helped to make this one of our most successful years. We are grateful for the opportunity to share our profits and strive to fulfill our Mis-sion in offering assistance to our urban community .

We concluded the year with a $25,854.59 shortfall, which is significantly better that the projected deficit of $150,498.00 we expected. The reduction is largely attributable to the approximately $100,000 we received from various wills and bequests. Additionally, our expenses came in $25,000 less than projected. At this point we have sufficient reserves to cover the $25,854.59 shortfall. Your continued support is greatly appreciated.

Partners for Wichita is hosting their popular Trivia Night Fundraiser on Saturday, February 20, 2016. This event will be held at First Presbyterian Church, 525 N. Broadway. Doors will open at 6:30p.m. and trivia will begin at 7:00 p.m.. The cost is $120 for teams of eight people registered in advance (a sav-ing), or $20 per individual in advance or all at the door. The price of admission includes a fun-filled night of trivia and laughs, soda, water, and table snacks. Please feel free to bring your own snacks, but please no alcohol. There is plenty of time between rounds for conversation, laughter, and fun. Trivia categories can vary greatly. Throughout the evening, we’ll play other fun little games (i.e. 50/50 raffle, Heads or Tails, attendance prizes, etc.), trying to raise as much money as possible to support Partners for Wichita. What is PARTNERS FOR WICHITA? The mission of Partners for Wichita is to pursue peace and well-being in Wichita and beyond through partnerships, by connecting individuals, faith communities and community organizations to meet urgent needs in the greater Wichita area. Partners for Wichita is es-pecially known for “Filling the Gap Lunches for Kids,” providing nourishing lunches for 800 children and youth each day during critical times of Spring Break and the end of summer vacation. We initiate the gathering of over 1,600 “Bags of Blessings” – filled with essential personal care items from about 50 con-gregations and distributed through 30 helping agencies to our neediest neighbors. Our Safe Streets/Youth Corps program reaches students with classes valuing healthy living and community service. What is a TRIVIA NIGHT? Teams of 8 people compete against other teams through 10 rounds of trivia.

Each round will have 10 questions and the team works together to answer the questions. At the end of the

night, the team with the most correct answers wins a prize.

Feel free to call or email Sally Fahrenthold, 316-683-8649, partnersforwichita.org, with any questions. Extra registration forms may be found on the Information Table.
