Volume 31, Issue 8 SEPTEMBER 2018 The Anchor FIRST LUTHERAN CHURCH PLANO, ILLINOIS Some of the most interesting and famous writing of early Christi- anity were public writings in defense of the Christian faith. Some would even argue that Luther’s writings fall under this cat- egory as well. These are not writings of practicing your faith, although many examples might be given. These are writings challenging how we think about faith in light of what we know about the world we live in, and more specifically in light of the objections to faith around the world we live in. Some people think that faith is best strengthened by teaching people how they should think, what exactly they should know and believe. This may be true in some case. But in many other cases I have found a way to strengthen faith is to use good tools to engage in healthy conversations about other ways of thinking, only to find yourself strengthened in faith by looking at the alternatives. Why Faith Matters, By David Wolpe is one book that I have been reading that falls into the category of “Apologetics” or defense of the faith. In each era an apologetics is necessary to converse with the issues of the day. This book does a decent job dialoguing with some of the biggest issues and biggest questions of life today. There are chapters titled Does religion cause vio- lence? Does science disprove religion? Is religion good for you? As well as other chapters. These may not be questions that you are asking yourself, but they certainly are questions that many people are asking. One way to be part of the conversation with others is to understand the conversation in the first place and the perspective that others bring to the table. If anyone would like to have a small group to read this book and have a conversations about some of the things that is written I would be happy to con- vene the group. Can you see

    your Church

    with new eyes?

THE BUILDING OF OUR CHURCH HOME 65 years ago!! A lot was sold to the con-gregation by Pastor E. Leonard Johnson. He drew up the architectural plans and ground was broken on August 9, 1953. It took sev-eral years to complete be-cause much of the labor was completed by members of the church.

Vitality Survey After services during the 3rd and 4th weekends in September First Lutheran will be asking members to participate in a Con-gregational vitality survey. First Lutheran last did this 2 1/2 years ago and the church council believes it is a good time to do the survey again. The survey will take about ten minutes. As always your participation is vital to the life and health of First Lutheran.

Crayola ColorCycle Crayola and schools across North America are banding together to help kids understand the importance of their role in protecting the environment. That’s why they launched Cray-ola ColorCycle. Through this initiative, stu-dents collect and repurpose used Crayola markers.

ColorCycle is a great opportunity for teachers and their students to explore eco-friendly practices. Specially developed standards-based lesson plans are available to enrich instruction and promote lively class discus-sions. Leadership Lab Experience Leadership lab is an amazing experience, and I encourage anybody that wants to grow closer to God to look into it. At lab, there are different levels: Basic, advanced, phase three, step 4th, cross-roads, and adult lab. Each level focuses on different fields of your spiritual life. Lab is about growing stronger in your faith and learning your spiritual gifts so you can use those gifts to help show others God’s unfailing love. I forged some very strong friendships my first year, and was happy to make more friends this year when I returned. The first day of my basic year, I was scared. I was all by my-self in a new place with new people, and I did not want to be there. As we know… God works in wondrous ways, and I can truly say the kids I met that first year are some of my closest friends, de-spite the fact that I spent only a week with them. God put these people in my life to help me grow stronger in my faith, and it is because of them that Leadership Lab is such a remarkable place to be. I thank the church for giving me the opportunity to participate in this awesome event, and a message for anyone that goes to lab… you will cry before the week is over, I promise. -Mya Thrall

Do you know someone who would be com-forted by a PRAYER SHAWL or LAP ROBE? Please feel free to take one from the quilt rack at the back of the sanctuary. These

beautiful items are made by members of First Lutheran Church for you to give to a sick or grieving friend.

    RETREAT!

Everyone is invited to attend the congregational retreat on

September 18th from 6-8:30 at the Hoover Forest Preserve.,

11285 Fox Road, Yorkville IL. A light meal will be provid-

ed. It has been a while since First Lutheran has done some-

thing like this. It will be a great opportunity to participate in

the current life and the future direction of this congregation.

The time will focus on understanding the many changes that

have occurred in society over the years that has an effect on

the church. There will also be time to better understand how

your church (First Lutheran) works as an organization, as

well as beginning to take a look at the future. The more

people that are able to attend the better, I believe, First Lu-

theran will be prepared for the next step into what God is

calling First Lutheran in the future. Again, I encourage all

who are able attend to come. There will be a sign- up sheet

made available so that we can make arrangements for the

    food. Pastor Black

Life Is Like A Mountain Railroad

Life is like a mountain railroad With an engineer so brave We must make this run successful From the cradle to the grave Watch the curves, the fills, the tunnels Never falter, never fail Keep your hand upon the throttle And your eye upon the rail Oh, blessed Savior, thou wilt guide us Til we reach that blissful shore Where the angels wait to join us In God's grace forever more Charles Davis Tillman was born on March 20, 1861, in Tallassee, Alabama. He is the youngest son of Baptist preacher James Lafayette Tillman and Mary (Davis) Tillman. Prior to 1887 he painted houses, and sold sheet music for a company in Raleigh, North Carolina. In 1887 he focused his career more on his church and musical talents, and establishing his own music publishing company in Atlan-ta. In 1889 Tillman was assisting his father with a tent meeting in Lexington, South Carolina, when he first heard the spiritual "The Old Time Religion." He quickly scrawled the words and the basics of the tune on a scrap of paper. The song was first published by G. D. Pike in 1873. Tillman published the work in 1891. Tillman's contribution was that he adapted the cadence and introduced the song into the repertoire of white southerners, including Buddy Holly and Elvis Presley. Tillman’s pub-lished version contains verses not found in Pike's 1873 version. Alvin York learned of the arrange-ment in Tillman’s songbooks and it became the background song for the 1941 Academy Award film Sergeant York. In 1909, Tillman published the lyrics of "Truth Reflects upon Our Senses" by Mormon poet Eliza R. Snow together with a tune that he attributed to himself (actually George Frederick Root's tune to “The Vacant Chair”). The refrain was worded by Baptist preacher M. E. Abbey. The combination became "Life’s Railway to Heaven" (also known as "Life is like a mountain railroad") and has been recorded by Boxcar Willie, the Carter Family, The Oak Ridge Boys, Tennessee Ernie Ford, Merle Haggard, Johnny Cash, Brad Paisley, and many others. Tillman’s tune is in 3/4 time, but a 4/4 version became widespread after Patsy Cline recorded it in 1959 as a solo; Willie Nelson later dubbed his voice into that version to form a duet. Besides "The Old Time Religion" and "Life’s Railway to Heaven,” Tillman’s works include "My Mother's Bible" “The Great Judgement Morning” and "When I Get to the End of the Way.” Tillman published 22 songbooks. He is memorialized in the Southern Gospel Museum and Hall of Fame and was among the first individuals to be inducted into the Gospel Music Hall of Fame. Charlie D. Tillman died on Sept. 2, 1943 and is buried in Atlanta’s Westview Cemetery. The monu-ment at his grave bears selected "Life's Railway to Heaven" lyrics.

STEWARDSHIP! - The Excitement of Living in God’s Grace Why Teach? By Donielle Anderson

The question arises quite often when people ask me why I teach for a living, what grade do I teach, do I like it and why do you teach in your spare time? Well that question for me is easy, teaching kids math, science, language and social studies is hard work but fun. You have to figure out how each kid can learn the lesson for the day, how can they

adapt this and then how they can apply this new information to remember and not just memorize. By the next day most kids come back telling me, “Mrs. Anderson I don’t remember how to do that or I don’t remember talk-ing about that.” Oh geez….helping teach kids core curriculum is hard work!

Now teaching in my spare time on Sundays about the Lord, his eternal Love and our eternal home in Heaven is easy for me. God loves us is something I teach the kids from the beginning, how much He loves us, why He loves us so much and how we can share his love to others is what I want them to learn. Anyone who is a Christian, I believe could teach to kids so, I began teaching Sunday School to give each of the kids a chance to know Jesus and his Father the way I know him personally. I want all the kids to know how deserving each of them are to experience his love. Not just some people get to go to Heaven and not just some people can go to church and not just some people can teach others about God’s love, we are all invited to be Christians and to spread the good news. It can be taught at a young age and can become a great rock these kids lean on, God is faithful all the time. By teaching on Sunday’s I apply this to the little minds in the classroom.

Each kid has different ways of being raised in life, if I can give these kids 30 minutes of undivided at-tention about how much God loves them, what He has done for us, why He continues to do things for us and pray that they will go out and be sheep among the wolves, then I feel my job is complete for the day, how easy is that. I want them to thirst for the good and be the good in the world, to shine with the love of the Lord and to spread the good news to all so that we may all be in Heaven together some day.

That is why I teach in my spare time, to bring others to the Lord and to spread the good news. I encour-age you to find your talents whether in teaching, crafts, stories, games, youth involvement, teen interaction or preschool age activities, anything you can do to contribute and help bring them closer to Jesus is so rewarding. Donielle Anderson is a paraprofessional in the classroom for 6th grade Special Ed at EGJ., a Paraprofes-sional for preschool for 5 years at PH Miller and teaches 1st & 2nd here at First.

Exciting Changes in the Education Wing We are pleased to announce that our great numbers of children in the lower grade levels has resulted in some changes in the layout of the Education wing music/classrooms. We will now have a classroom exclusively for preschool students, one for kindergarten students and another for 1st/2nd grades. The music room has moved to the old conference room, so we will have more room to sing, dance, play instruments and just plain have fun! Just like last year, the time for Sunday School will be 10:15-11:00 AM. Children will be encour-aged to enjoy snacks during fellowship from ap-prox. 10-10:10 AM and then be ready to sing at 10:15 AM. This new schedule will begin on Sep-tember 16th, following the Rally Day on Septem-ber 9th.

Sign Up to be a Secret Pal

As we hoped, the new First Kids Faith Mail mailbox system was a huge hit last year! The program became more faith based, affordable and fun for adults and students alike. If you would like to sign up, there is a sheet in the back of the church. The only requirement is that you would like to provide support and encouragement to a Sunday School child throughout the school year. This encourage-ment may be in the form of anonymous notes, cards, little snacks or small surprises. This tru-ly has become a loving (not expensive) venture! Last year, we provided anonymous question-naires so adults could answer questions from the students and then the students could share info about themselves back with the adults! So fun!! Secret pals will reveal their names to the Sun-day School children at the Sunday School Awards Program in May. This is a great way to share your love of the Lord with a child and help them realize how important they are in His eyes (and yours, too!). Sign up today! with a child and help them realize how im-portant they are in His eyes (and yours, too!). Sign up today!

    Sunday School Begins September 9th

Come help us explore the wonders of our great and loving God as we begin the Sunday School year on Sunday, September 9th at 9:00 AM. On September 9th, we will join with our Methodist and Baptist friends for a Rally Day celebration from 9:00-10:15 AM. Please note that this is a different time than Sun-day School be held for the 2018-19 school year, which is 10:15-11:00 AM. Actually, Rally Day will take place at the same time as Sun-day worship service on September 9th, or 9-10:15 AM. All Sunday School children and teachers are invited to attend the exciting program on Au-gust 9th, featuring Tim Hannig (Christian ministry magician) to be held at the Method-ist Church. Following this program, we will return to First Lutheran for donuts and juice and goodie bags. Come join us!

Sunday School Teachers Installed Sunday School teachers will be installed at the church service on Sunday, September 16th. If you will be involved in the Sunday School, please plan to attend on this day to be recognized. J

Bibles Distributed to 3rd Graders on September 16

The Youth/Education Committee and Sunday School of First Lutheran is proud to present Bibles to all 3rd grade students and their par-ents at the 9:00 AM service on Sunday, Sep-tember 16. You will receive a letter from the church office about this special day. Please call to RSVP.

Craft Night! Am I the only one who thinks doing crafts is an awesome idea, but never seems to make the time to do it? I thought it might be fun to have a Craft night here at First Lutheran. The date is set for Thursday, September 13th from 6:30-8:30PM. Come and go as you please. I enjoy scrapbooking, but I will not be sup-plying or leading a particular craft, it’s just a night to offer you the space to craft on your own. Bring what you want to work on. Maybe get some ideas from others. This is a night simply to get yourself organized and start crafting on what you want and to enjoy the company of others. Any questions or suggestions please see me, Ruth Ann Hoehn.

    Seize the Day!

[From the Plano Library program flyer] Monday, October 15, 6:30 PM. Jerri Lynn Baker lives each day to its fullest-or pretty close. Five years after her 2004 cancer diagnosis, Baker stopped focusing on death and started seeking joy. Hear about and be inspired by her :Freakin’ 365+1” adventure in which she did something new ever day for a year; and learn from her to take joy in the little things. No registration needed. Location: Meeting room.
