Easter is a time when darkness and light seem to collide. Easter is a
time that carries all the cold and bitterness of winter and at the same time the
hope and promise of spring. The pinnacle for me is always that night before
Easter. For you see, it was that night before Easter, sixteen years ago, when I
had a life altering experience. I heard the words, “Christina Atherean, child of
God, you have been sealed by the Holy Spirit and marked with the cross of Christ
forever.” My head wet, my hair still damp from water, an oily cross was marked
on my head.
It was a moment when I physically felt the promise of God. The sound
and feel of the water as it was poured over my head, the texture and fragrant
scent of the oil. Every sense confirmed what was already in my heart. I was a
child of God, a child of promise and truth.
Sixteen years have almost passed and every year it seems like I to need
to hear those words, to feel that promise more and more. Easter has become a
time of business, a time to mark off one more thing on an endless list of “things to
do”. Perhaps that is why we need the season of Easter so much.
Much of the year we seem to evaporate into a world of darkness, where
fear and confusion seem so powerful, and so hard to ignore. Yet, Easter reminds
us of who we are in the midst of the world. Easter is a time when darkness and
light seem to collide, a time that carries all the cold and bitterness of the world
and at the same time the hope and promise of the resurrected Christ.
I invite you to come to Easter, all you who are weary, all you faint of
heart. Come to Easter and experience the dampness of the empty tomb. Hear
the words - “You are made new. In water you have died to sin and death. In
water you have been made new.” Now with water dripping from your head, feel
the promise of God in the risen Christ Jesus our Lord.
Christ Has Risen! Alleluia!
