WE ARE REPLACING THE SCHOOL SUPPLY DRIVE WITH A COAT DRIVE!

Many children in Mandan come to school in the winter with no coat, mittens, scarf, snow boots, etc. If you have any of these gently used items please make sure they are washed/cleaned and bring them to the church. The middle school/high school students are in need as well (especially coats). There will be a SPECIAL BOX for these items in the narthex; please drop your donations in there. Thank you for your kindness!

Thrivent “Choice Dollars” If you are a member of Thrivent you are eligible to designate “Choice Dollars” and submit Action Teams.

People who have insurance or annuity products from Thrivent get to designate “Choice Dollars” to qualified organizations. This money is not from your Thrivent account but is donated by Thrivent and will go unused if you do not dedicate it. By selecting First Lutheran Church those dollars get used by the church for various group activities.

Every member of Thrivent (16 & over) is eligible to submit two “Action Teams” a year. An action team can be an event that builds up the community/church or that is a fundraising event for various groups. Thrivent will give groups $250.00 in seed money as well as t-shirts, etc. for items/advertising that may be needed for events. We have seen action team money used here for LAF, Donkey Basketball and for other mission trip fundraisers.

We have many activities going on here at First Lutheran Church and these groups would qualify for Thrivent help.

If you have any questions please call your Thrivent rep and they will get you started.

Remember….If you don’t dedicate your money it goes unused!

Friendship Circle is collecting school supplies for Lutheran World Relief.

Mark Your

Calendar…

Each year we have around 150 children registered for church school.

If you have taught, dropped off a child, or walked through the

education wing - you have seen our space is limited. So every year

there is a tension that plays out with over filled classrooms, the need

for teachers, and a lot of flexibility that makes church school work.

The truth is Covid-19 has radically changed our reality. Out of an

abundance of caution for the care of our volunteers and families the

decision has been made to host online church school through pre-

made videos and host confirmation classes on ZOOM. At the start of

the new year a decision will be made about starting in person classes

again.

In order to make sure everyone stays connected and receives the right

information. We are asking you to register for church school and

confirmation the way you normally do. This will allow us to send

materials and information to those that wish to receive it. It will also

allow us to order and make available the right materials.

Register Here: https://firstlutheranofmandan.com/registration-form/

2020 Special Meeting of the Synod Assembly

Over 300 members of the Western North Dakota Synod gathered together online on July 17, 2020 for a Special Meeting of Synod Assembly. The original assembly was cancelled due to concerns related to the Covid-19 pandemic and rescheduled to July 17, 2020. While an in-person gathering had been planned, rising numbers of cases in the synod led Synod Council to move the gathering to an online format.

Called by Name

Synod Assembly officially started with worship led by Interim Bishop David B. Zellmer and ELCA Secretary, Deacon Sue Rothmeyer and our Assembly Musicians. The theme “Called by Name” was emphasized throughout day in readings, hymns, prayers, bible study and the message shared by Interim Bishop David B. Zellmer.

Bishop Election

The assembly elected Rev. Craig Schweitzer of Bismarck the next bishop of the Western North Dakota Synod. An historic event, Schweitzer is the first bishop in the ELCA to be elected in an online assembly.

Schweitzer was elected on the sixth ballot with 165 votes. The Rev. Desiree Uhrich of Minot received 120. We give thanks to all who remained open to the call, especially Rev. Lisa Ahlness of Bismarck, Rev. Pauline Crowder of Bowdon, Rev. Carter Hill of Stanley, Rev. Zachariah Shipman of Crosby and Rev. Julie Kurtz Anderson of Bismarck who all addressed the assembly following the second ballot.

The bishop-elect has served Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Bismarck as senior pastor since 2014, and as associate pastor from 2010-2014. Schweitzer holds a Masters of Science in Strategic Leadership from the University of Mary and was prepared for ordination through the Theological Education for Emerging Ministry Program (TEEM) through Luther Seminary and Pacific Lutheran Seminary.

Installation of the new bishop is scheduled for November 1, 2020.

ELCA Churchwide Report

Deacon Sue Rothmeyer, Secretary of the ELCA, led the election process as our Churchwide representative. As she introduced the Office of the Bishop, she spoke of the duties of the Office such as preaching, teaching, servanthood, being a CEO and a large emphasis was put on the “MORE” that the bishop is involved with while they serve in the role to which they have been called.

A video message featuring Presiding Bishop Elizabeth Eaton and members of the ELCA celebrated ministry carried out in different ways. Even though we may find ourselves in a world marked by uncertainty, God continues to call us. Even in challenging times, ministry thrives in new and life-giving ways through congregations of the ELCA.

Bible Engagement

Deidre Wall, Luther Seminary student, deacon candidate, Children, Youth, and Family Ministry Coordinator at Christ Lutheran Church, and Coordinator of the Vocational Intern Program at Lutheran Campus Ministry at Minot State University shared Bible studies related to the theme verse from Isaiah 43 focusing on “Called by Name.” Assembly attendants were asked to consider what they are called to in their daily lives and how they live out their baptismal vocations.
