Make It Fun (Introductory Activities, 10 minutes)

Prepare to offer one or more of the following activities as your 3-, 4-, or 5-year-olds arrive. Let one or two teachers lead activities in different areas of the room while another teacher greets parents and kids at the door.

1. All BetterWhat You Need: Several stuffed animals, large red dot stickers, long strips of bandages, small paper cups, and small blankets.

What You Do: Place lots of red dots all over the stuffed animals. Point out to the children that the animals have lots of boo-boos. Wrap the boo-boos in bandages, use the cups to give the stuffed animals pretend water to drink, and then rock the animals in the blankets.

What You Say: At the start of the activity: “Oh, no! Look at our friends. They have boo-boos all over their bodies. We have to help make them all better.”

During the activity: “These bandages will help the boo-boos. Oh, and we can give them some water to drink. There, there, little bear. This blanket will keep you warm. Guess what. A man in our Bible story today has LOTS of boo-boos all over his body. I wonder who’s going to help make him all better.”

2. Bath TimeWhat You Need: Several baby dolls, baby washcloths, water, and towels.

Curriculum Materials for 3- through 5-year-olds • © 2011 First Look. All rights reserved. • www.whatisorange.org/firstlook 3

Page 4: First Look July week 5- Preschool

First Look 3- through 5-year-olds, July, Week 5

What You Do: You and the children will give the baby dolls a bath. Wet the washcloths and let the children use them to wash the babies all over. Use the towels to dry the babies off, wrap them, and cuddle them. Oh, no! The babies are dirty again. Looks like you will have to give them another bath. Continue playing as long as the children are interested.

What You Say: During the activity: (To the tune of “Row, Row, Row Your Boat”) “Wash, wash, wash the baby. Get her skin all clean. Rub-a-dub, rub-a-dub, wash her skin all clean.” (Sing over and over while you wash the baby dolls.)

At the end of the activity: “Our babies’ skin is all clean. Good job! Our Bible story today is about a man named Naaman (NAY-uh-muhn). He goes to see someone about getting his skin all clean too.”

3. Soft SkinBe sure to list the lotions you will be using today on the “Allergy Alert Poster” (from Other Resources on the Web site) and post it at the door to your room.

What You Need: Baby lotion.

What You Do: Invite the children to take off their shoes and sit with you. Give each of them some baby lotion. Show them how to rub some lotion on their feet, legs, arms, tummies, and hands. Continue giving them a little lotion at a time until they are done rubbing it on their skin.

What You Say: “When God made us, He covered our bodies with skin. See? We have skin on our face, tummy, legs, arms, back, feet—we have skin all over! Let’s rub some of this nice lotion all over our skin. It smells really good, and it makes our skin so soft. In our Bible story today, a man named Naaman doesn’t have nice, soft skin like you and me. He has boo-boos all over his body. Let’s go see what he does to make them go away.”

Make It True (Large Group, 15 minutes)

After children have participated in Make It Fun, gather them for a large group time that includes an introductory sketch, a Bible story, and interactive worship.

Choose an adult who relates well to preschoolers to tell the Introductory Sketch. If possible, use the same adult all year. To add variety, consider videotaping the sketch and playing the video during Make It True.

A Worship Leader and live instruments are recommended to sing along with the music tracks. Encourage children to be active during worship by incorporating the appropriate hand motions found on the Web site. Smaller groups may want to provide assorted percussion instruments for children to play while singing.

1. Introductory SketchFirst Look offers weekly introductory sketches on the DVD titled “Wonder! Look at God’s Story.” This DVD is available for purchase at the reThink store on our Web site.

What You Need: Long, bright swim trunks; a T-shirt; swim floaties; goggles; and flippers for the Host to wear. The Host will also need a piece of paper that will act as the “Pool Rues.”

HOST: (Enter wearing the swim trunks, T-shirt, swim floaties, goggles, and flippers. Very excited about going swimming after church, sing the following in a teasing rhythm as you do the motions.) “I’m going swimming, in a pool of water. (Make a swimming motion.) I’m jumping in, because it’s getting hotter. (Jump up while holding your nose, then squat as you land like you’re going under water. Repeat the rhyme as desired. When finished, put the goggles on the top of your head.)

“Hey, howdy, hey, little buddies! Guess what I’m doing today after church. (Pause briefly.) I’m going swimming! I cannot WAIT to jump in that cool pool of water and swim around like a little fish. (Make swimming motions around the storytelling area.) I love to swim! I love to swim! I love to swim! I love to swim!

“The friend I’m going swimming with today gave me this list of pool rules. (Hold up the paper.) He said if we don’t do exactly what the pool rules say, the lifeguard will NOT let us swim. (Switching to a serious instructor voice) If you don’t obey, you don’t get to play. (Back to normal voice) I guess I better take a look at these pool rules if they’re THAT important.

“Let’s see ... Pool Rules:

1. (In serious instructor voice) CHILDREN MUST SWIM WITH AN ADULT. (Back to regular voice) That makes sense. Little people need big people.

2. (In serious instructor voice) NO RUNNING. (Back to regular voice) I won’t be running. I’ll be swimming. (Big smile)

3. (In serious instructor voice) NO DIVING. (Back to regular voice) No diving? What? (Whining) Why? Diving is so much fun.

“I’m not sure if I like these pool rules very much. (Cross your arms and look upset.) Rules are cool, but not for the pool. That’s what I say!

(Looking back at the rules, attitude slowly changing) “But if I say that the pool rules are not cool, the lifeguard won’t let me swim with my friend. Now THAT would definitely NOT be cool! I guess the rules are there to keep me safe. I don’t want to get hurt. I just want to have fun at the pool with my friend.

“Hmm .... maybe pool rules aren’t so bad. (Pause for a moment as you look at the paper, then look up with a big smile.) Okay, I’ve decided. I am going to do exactly what the pool rules say. (Put the swim goggles back over your eyes, hold the pool rules up overhead, and makes a hero stance.) I will do what the pool rules say!

(Quickly look down at the children, give a big smile, and then begin singing in a teasing rhythm and doing the motions from earlier.) “I’m going swimming, in a pool of water. (Make a swimming motion.) I’m jumping in, because it’s getting hotter.” (Jump up while holding your nose, then squat as you land like you’re going under water. Repeat the rhyme as you exit.)

2. Bible StoryFirst Look offers a weekly Bible story on our DVD titled “Wonder! Look at God’s Story,” which you may choose to use rather than a live Storyteller this week. This DVD is available for purchase at the reThink store on our Web site.

What You Need: A Bible and large red dot stickers.

STORYTELLER: “Our Bible story today is about a man named Naaman. Can you say ‘Naaman’?”

CHILDREN and STORYTELLER: “Naaman!”

STORYTELLER: “Good job. You can find Naaman’s story right here in the Bible. (Hold up the Bible.) That means it is a true story, because all the stories in the Bible are true.

“Now, Naaman was a supercool kind of guy. (Said with lots of pride) He was a commander in an army. Not only was he a commander, but he was also a great, strong, brave man. EVERYONE loved Naaman. Yay, Naaman! Yay, Naaman! Yay, Naaman!

“There was just one problem. Naaman had leprosy. (Take out the red dot stickers and put several on your arms and face.)

“Leprosy is a sickness that makes painful sores all over your skin. (Hold your arms out for the children to see the red dots.) Look at my boo-boos. They’re everywhere, and boy, do they hurt!

“That’s not all the bad news either. No one knew how to make the sores go away. This made Naaman and all his friends very sad. Boohoo, boohoo. Cry with me. We’re all sad.”

CHILDREN and STORYTELLER: “Boohoo, boohoo.”

STORYTELLER: “Poor, poor Naaman. (Pause briefly.) Well, one day a servant girl told Naaman’s wife about a man who could make Naaman’s skin all better. She said (in your best girly voice) ‘If only my master, Naaman, would go see the prophet Elisha. He loves God and can make the sores on Naaman’s skin all better.’

“Well, this was FANTASTIC news! Naaman’s wife told Naaman, and Naaman told the king. He said, ‘Hey, King! My wife’s servant girl told her, (in your best girly voice) “If only my master, Naaman, would go see the prophet Elisha. He loves God and can make the sores on his skin all better.”’

“The king was so excited about the good news that he sent Naaman to see Elisha, the prophet, right away. Hop up! We’re going to see Elisha!

(Pretend to ride an animal around the storytelling area.) “We’re riding to see Elisha! Come on! Faster! We’re almost there. Whoa!

“When Naaman got to Elisha’s house, Elisha sent a messenger to Naaman. The messenger said, (in your best announcer voice) ‘Go and wash yourself seven times in the Jordan River. Then the sores on your skin will be all better.”

(Acting angry) “Oh, this made Naaman MAD! Naaman thought the prophet Elisha would come out of his house, wave his hands around, say something to God, and—POOF—the sores on his skin would be all better. But, NO! Instead, he told Naaman to (in your best announcer voice) ‘Go and wash yourself seven times in the Jordan River. Then the sores on your skin will be all better.’

First Look 3- through 5-year-olds, July, Week 5

(Continue with an attitude.) “Outside? Where everyone can see? I can take a bath at home! I’m not taking a bath in THAT river! No way! Not going to happen! You can forget IT! (Cross your arms.) Humph!

“All of Naaman’s servants wanted him to be all better, so they went to him and told him they knew he was a brave, strong, great soldier. They knew he could do all kinds of BIG, BRAVE things. Why not do this one little thing? So what if the prophet Elisha told you to take a bath. Just do what God says. Just (in your best announcer voice) go and wash yourself seven times in the Jordan river. Then the sores on your skin will be all better.

“So Naaman decided to do what the prophet Elisha told him to do. He went to the Jordan River and got in the water. (Pretend to pick your feet up and set them in water.)

“Okay, I need you to count to seven with me. Remember, the prophet Elisha, who loved God, told Naaman he had to dip in the water seven times to get all better. Here we go.” (Squat down each time you “dip in the water.” Remove some red dot stickers each time you dip.)

CHILDREN and STORYTELLER: “One, two, three, four, five, six, seven!”

STORYTELLER: (Stand up straight and hold your arms out for the children to see.) “After Naaman dipped in the water seven times, ALL the sores on his skin were gone, just like the prophet Elisha said! God had done what He said He would do. Can you believe what God says?”

CHILDREN and STORYTELLER: [Bottom Line] “God does what He says He will do!”

STORYTELLER: “Naaman was so happy that God had done what He said He would do that he went back to the prophet Elisha’s house to let him know that NOW He loved God too! Wow! What a great story!

“Naaman learned that he needed to do what God said. Guess what! We need to do what God says, too. We can always trust God and believe that He will do what He says He will do. Can you believe what God says?”

CHILDREN and STORYTELLER: [Bottom Line] “God does what He says He will do!”

STORYTELLER: “Lets pray.”

4. WorshipFor additional worship resources to equip your worship leaders and worship team, visit www.amberskyrecords.com.

What You Need: Paper clip “Memory Verse Card” (from the Activity Pages on the Web site) in your Bible at Proverbs 3:5. You will also need a CD player and this month’s worship song, “God Said So,” which you will need to download from the Web site. You will also need “My God Is So Big,” available at www.amberskyrecords.com on the “One Big Gulp” album. Be sure to download the hand motions that accompany each song.

WORSHIP LEADER: “God is SO big that He was able to make all the sores on Naaman’s skin go away. God did what He said He would do! Yay, God! God is big enough to do what He says for you, too. Stand up and let’s sing about how our God is SO BIG!”

Lead children in singing “My God Is So Big.”

WORSHIP LEADER: “Woo-hoo! You sound wonderful! I love listening to you sing to God. Before we sing another song, I want us to say the Bible verse we learned this month as loud as we can. Are you ready?”

CHILDREN and WORSHIP LEADER: (Loudly) “‘Trust (hug yourself) the Lord (point one index finger straight up above your head) with all (make big circles with both arms) your heart (put both hands over your heart),’ Proverbs 3:5 (open your hands like a book).”

WORSHIP LEADER: “You about blew me away! That was so loud! Can you say it again? This time, though, I want you to use your whisper voice. (Begin whispering) Here we go.”

CHILDREN and WORSHIP LEADER: (Whispering) “‘Trust (hug yourself) the Lord (point one index finger straight up above your head) with all (make big circles with both arms) your heart (put both hands over your heart),’ Proverbs 3:5 (open your hands like a book).”

WORSHIP LEADER: “Great job! I hope you always remember that you can trust God. God loves you and will always do what He says. Who loves you?”

Make It Stick (Application Activities, 35 minutes)

These activities are designed to help preschoolers understand and remember today’s Bible story and Bottom Line. Offer as many of the following activities as your time, facilities, resources, and leadership allow. You may want to lead one activity at a time. Or offer two activities at once and allow half the kids to participate in each, then switch groups and repeat the activities.

1. Jump In!What You Need: A large piece of blue art paper, scissors, and masking tape.

What You Do: Before the activity: Cut a large circle out of the blue paper. You may want to combine sections of blue paper to make the circle large enough. The circle needs to be big enough for all the children to stand on at the same time.

During the activity: Tape the blue circle to the floor. Ask the children to make a circle around the “water.” Explain that you will give the children simple commands to follow, such as to raise an arm, stand on one foot, pat your belly, etc. Throughout the game, any time you say “jump in the water,” the children must jump onto the blue paper. Make sure you say “jump in the water” about every fourth or fifth command. While the children are in the water, you can give commands like splash in the water, wash your face, sit in the water, and eventually, get out of the water. Play as long as the children are interested.

What You Say: At the start of the activity: “Naaman’s skin was finally made all better because he did what God told him to do. What did God tell Naaman to do? (Pause for responses.) God told Naaman to dip in the water seven times. Today we are going to pretend this big blue piece of paper is water. All you have to do is listen and do what I say. When I say to jump in the water, I want you to jump onto the blue paper. Remember, just listen and do what I say. (Repeat.) Listen and do what I say. Got it? Let’s have some fun!”

During the activity: “I want everyone to touch your head. Now pat your belly. How about raise your arms over your head. Can you jump up and down? How about ... jump in the water! You’re in the water! Wash your face, arms, and don’t forget your legs. Now get out of the water.” (Continue giving the children simple commands and telling them to “jump in the water” after every fourth or fifth command.)

At the end of the activity: (Sit together around the blue circle.) “God wants you and you and you (go around the circle) and me to do what He says. If God tells you to love people, you should love people. If God says to share your toys, you should share your

toys. If God says to obey your mommy and daddy, guess what you should do? Obey your mommy and daddy! You can always trust that what God tells you to do is the very best thing you can do. So, can you believe what God says? Yes! [Bottom Line] God does what He says He will do.”

2. Love on a RollWhat You Need: A medium-sized rubber ball.

What You Do: Sit in a circle with the children. Direct everyone to spread their legs out so they’re touching toes with the folks beside them. Look at a child and say, “Who loves (child’s name)?” Then roll the ball to that child. When he or she catches the ball, coach him or her in saying, [Basic Truth] “God loves me!” They will then roll the ball back to you. Do this with each child. The goal is to get each child to say, [Basic Truth] “God loves me” as many times as you can. Continue playing as long as the children are interested.

What You Say: During the activity: “Come sit with me. I have a fun game for us to play. Who loves (child’s name)? [Basic Truth] God loves me! Who loves (another child’s name)? [Basic Truth] God loves me!” (Continue with each child multiple times.)

At the end of the activity: “One of the reasons [Bottom Line] God does what He says He will do is because He loves you. That means you can always believe what God says, because God will always love you. Can you believe what God says? Yes! [Bottom Line] God does what He says He will do. That’s right! [Bottom Line] God does what He says He will do because He loves you. Who loves you? [Basic Truth] God loves me!”

3. Going for a DipWhat You Need: Blue plastic cups, “Story Stickers” (from the Activity Pages on the Web site), Avery® labels #5160, scissors, craft sticks, “Little Naaman” (from the Activity Pages on the Web site), white paper, and red markers.

What You Do: Before the activity: Make enough copies of “Story Stickers” on Avery® labels #5160 so each child gets one sticker. Make enough copies of “Little Naaman” so that each child has two Naaman cutouts. Cut out all the Naaman pictures. Cut a slit large enough for the craft stick to slide through the bottom of each plastic cup.

During the activity: Give each child two “Little Naaman” cutouts, a blue plastic cup, a story sticker, and a craft stick. Tell the children to make red dots on one of their Naaman

cutouts. Next, tape the Naaman with red dots on the end of one side of the craft stick and the Naaman without red dots on the end of the other side of the same craft stick. Show the children how to slide the Naaman up and down through the slit in the bottom of the blue cup so it looks like Naaman is going up and down in the water. Turn the stick so the Naaman without spots is showing after dipping seven times in the river. (Hold the cup upright. The craft stick goes down through the mouth of the cup into the slit in the bottom of the cup. Hold the bottom of the craft stick that is sticking out of the bottom of the cup. Push the stick up and down. The Naaman cutout will poke his head up out of the cup.) Have children place a story sticker on their cup.

What You Say: “In today’s Bible story, we heard how Naaman had sores all over his body. No one knew how to make the sores go away. It was very, very bad. This is going to be our Naaman (giving each child a Naaman picture). I want you to make red sores all over his body.

“Now, the Bible says Naaman heard of a man named Elisha who could make his sores go away. This was great news! Elisha could make Naaman all better! This picture of Naaman will be what he looks like after Elisha makes him all better. (Give each child a second Naaman picture. Show them how to tape the two Naaman pictures back to back on the tip of a craft stick.)

“Naaman quickly went to see Elisha. Do you remember what Elisha told Naaman that God wanted him to do? (Pause for responses.) God told Naaman to go and wash in the Jordan River seven times. This cup will be the Jordan River (holding up a cup). Watch this. (Demonstrate how to make the Naaman pictures on the craft stick dip in the water through the slit in the cup.) Now we can make Naaman dip in the water seven times, just like in the Bible story. Let’s count together. One, two, three ... seven! Now turn your Naaman to the side that has no sores. Look! Naaman is all better!

“God did what He said He would do! God told Naaman that if he would do what He said, He would make the sores all better. That is exactly what happened. God wants you and me to do what He says, too. We can believe that when we obey God, [Bottom Line] God does what He says He will do. Can you believe what God says? [Bottom Line] God does what He says He will do!” (Continue to make your Naaman stick people dip in the water. Play as long as the children are interested.)

4. Bible BeachWhat You Need: A beach towel for each child. Make one of the beach towels very distinctive, like solid yellow or big red stripes—anything that stands out from the other towels. This will be your “special towel.” You will also need a CD player and a CD with fun preschool music on it. (Note: You could use construction paper rather than towels.)

Curriculum Materials for 3- through 5-year-olds • © 2011 First Look. All rights reserved. • www.whatisorange.org/firstlook 13

Page 14: First Look July week 5- Preschool

First Look 3- through 5-year-olds, July, Week 5

What You Do: You and the children will play a game similar to musical chairs. Lay all the beach towels on the floor in a circle with space between each one. Make sure to include your “special towel.” Instruct the children to each stand on a towel. When the music plays, the children will walk from towel to towel in a circle. When the music stops, everyone will sit on a towel. The person on the “special towel” gets to stand and say the Bible verse. Encourage everyone to clap for the person after they say the verse. Start the music and play again. Try to give each child an opportunity to say the Bible verse.

What You Say: At the start of the activity: (Say the Bible verse with motions together a few times before you play the game.) “’Trust the Lord with all your heart,’ Proverbs 3:5.”

During the activity: “Okay, I think we’re ready. When you hear the music, I want you to walk in a circle. Remember to stay on the beach towels. When the music stops, I want you to sit on a beach towel. If you are sitting on our special towel, you get to say the Bible verse all by yourself. Ready? Here we go!”

At the end of the activity: “You all did a FANTASTIC job! I am so happy you all know our Bible verse. God wants us to trust Him with all our heart. Do you know why we can trust and believe what God says? Because [Bottom Line] God does what He says He will do. Can you believe what God says? Yes! [Bottom Line] God does what He says He will do.”

5. Stick It to HimWhat You Need: Red dot stickers, “Naaman” (from the Activity Pages on the Web site), light tan cardstock, clear tape, and a bandana. (Note: If you are able to enlarge the Activity Page, do so for younger children.)

What You Do: Before the activity: Make two copies of “Naaman” on light tan cardstock.

During the activity: The children will play a game like “Pin the Tail on the Donkey,” only they will be sticking red dots to a picture of Naaman. Tape one of the Naaman pictures to the wall. Blindfold the children one at a time. Spin them around, give them two red dot stickers to stick on the picture of Naaman, and then send them in the direction of the picture. You and the other children can cheer and try to guide the person who is blindfolded. Once the person places their stickers on the picture, the next person gets a turn and so on until all the children have had a turn. Play several times so the picture of Naaman gets covered in red dot stickers. When you are done, count to seven with the children and pull out the second Naaman picture that has no stickers on it. Tape it to the wall beside the picture with dots and point out that after Naaman did what God said, his boo-boos were all better.

What You Say: At the start of the activity: “Raise your hand if you’ve ever played ‘Pin the Tail on the Donkey.’ Well, today we’re going to play ‘Stick the Boo-boo on Naaman!’”

At the end of the activity: “Look at poor, poor Naaman. He is covered in boo-boos! Do you remember what God told Naaman to do to make his boo-boos all better? (Pause for responses.) Yes! God told Naaman to dip seven times in the Jordan River. Count to seven with me! One, two, three ... seven! (Pull out the other Naaman picture.) After Naaman did what God said, his boo-boos were all better. God did what He said He would do. He made Naaman all better. We can always believe what God says. Can YOU believe what God says? Yes! [Bottom Line] God does what He says He will do.”

Make It Real (Small Groups, 5 minutes)

Make It Real is designed to help preschoolers understand how the Bottom Line applies to them. They’ll discuss real-life experiences and share prayer requests.

Divide kids into small groups of about five to eight children with each leader. Ideally, assign the same small group leader to the same group of preschoolers for the entire year.

1. Small Group TimeWhat You Need: Paper clip “Memory Verse Card” (from the Activity Pages on the Web site) in your Bible at Proverbs 3:5. Provide a journal and a fun-shaped pen for each small group. You may also want to have a hand stamp or reward sticker for those who try to say the memory verse.

SMALL GROUP LEADER (SGL): “What was your favorite part about today’s Bible story? (Pause for responses.) I liked it when Naaman finally decided to do what God said. God will do amazing things in our lives when we trust Him and just do what He says.

“Let’s turn in our Bible to the verse we have been learning. Who wants to help me find it? (Allow a child to help you find the marked verse.) Here it is! Our verse says, ‘Trust the Lord with all your heart,’ Proverbs 3:5. Let’s say our verse together. Then, if anyone wants to say it all my themselves, they can.”

CHILDREN and SGL: “‘Trust (hug yourself) the Lord (point one index finger straight up above your head) with all (make big circles with both arms) your heart (put both hands over your heart),’ Proverbs 3:5 (open your hands like a book).”

SGL: “Would anyone like to try to say our verse by themselves?”

(Give each child who wants it the opportunity to say the verse. Have a hand stamp or sticker ready to reward those who try.)

SGL: “When we trust God, we will do what He tells us to do. What are some of the things God tells us to do? Love our friends. Share. Tell the truth. Help people. Say nice words. Obey our parents. Let’s make a list in our journal of some things God tells us to do. Then we can pray and ask God to help us do what He says.”

(Write, “God tells us to ... ” in the journal. Then list what the children tell you.)

SGL: “Let’s pray.”
