    CALL TO CONFESSION

    PRAYER OF CONFESSION

    We praise you, O God, for in Jesus your compassion has been eternally revealed. Yet we confess that we often fail to hear and obey his call. Forgive us for the times when we fail to reach out to those who are going through difficult times. Forgive us when fail to hear your call to act on your passion for the powerless. Turn our hearts toward you, and may Jesus the good shepherd continue to guide and lead us in paths of righteousness. In the name of Christ we pray.

    PRAYERS OF SILENT AND INDIVIDUAL CONFESSION

    WORDS OF ASSURANCE

    Leader: Friends, believe and proclaim the Good News: in Jesus Christ, love breaks through hatred, hope breaks

    through despair, life breaks through death.

    People: In Jesus Christ, we are forgiven, loved, and set free. Thanks be to God! Amen.

    * RESPONSE Festival Canticle

  • THE WORD

    PRAYER FOR ILLUMINATION

    FIRST LESSON 2 Samuel 24:18-24

    * HYMN 387 Savior, Like a Shepherd Lead Us Bradbury

    SECOND LESSON Acts 2:42-47

    SERMON “Glad” Rev. Richard S. Hong

    * NICENE CREED

    We believe in one God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, and of all things visible and invisible;

    And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of God, begotten of the Father before all worlds, God of God, Light of Light, Very God of Very God, begotten, not made, being of one substance with the Father by whom all things were made; who for us men, and for our salvation, came down from heaven, and was incarnate by the Holy Spirit of the Virgin Mary, and was made man, and was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate. He suffered and was buried, and the third day he rose again according to the Scriptures, and ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of the Father. And he shall come again with glory to judge both the quick and the dead, whose kingdom shall have no end.

    And we believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord and Giver of Life, who proceedeth from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son together is worshiped and glorified, who spoke by the prophets. And we believe one holy catholic and apostolic church. We acknowledge one baptism for the remission of sins. And we look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

    THE OFFERING

    OFFERTORY Faithful Shepherd Grayston Ives

  • TODAY’S MUSIC Samuel Scheidt (1587-1654) was born in Halle, Germany and served churches in that area. A student of Sweelinck in Amsterdam, Scheidt was the first significant German Baroque composer of organ music. His “Tablatura Nova” of 1624 was the first keyboard edition by a German organist published in modern notation. William Billings (1746-1800) was a colonial American composer from Boston, and is widely regarded as the father of American choral music. In addition to his involvement in establishing “Singing Schools” Billings created what is now recognized as a uniquely American style. Ralph Manuel (b. 1951) has written various sacred choral anthems, vocal solos and duets, and keyboard arrangements. He and his wife, Donna, spent 24 years as missionaries of the International Mission Board of the Southern Baptist Convention in Recife, Brazil. He currently serves as Minister of Music at Heritage Baptist Church in Norwood, Massachusetts. Today we recognize Good Shepherd Sunday with Grayston Ives (born 1948) setting of Psalm 23. Ives is a British composer, singer and choral director. Until March 2009, Ives was Organist, Tutor in Music at Magdalen College, Oxford. In this role he was responsible for the daily musical life of the college chapel. He was a member of The King’s Singers in the 1980s. The music of Everett Titcomb (1884-1968) occupies a unique niche sacred organ and choral works by 20th-century Anglican composers in the United States. His style was clearly influenced by the Bostonian giants of his youth (Dudley Buck, Horatio Parker--who's mother once had Titcomb as a border) as well as his affinity for French music; yet at the same time his work is informed by his interest in plainchant and the polyphonic style of the 15th and 16th century. He spent fifty years (1910-1960) as organist and choirmaster at Boston's Church of St. John the Evangelist.

    * * * * * TODAY’S SCRIPTURE READINGS

    2 Samuel 24:18-24 (NRSV) That day Gad came to David and said to him, “Go up and erect an altar to the LORD on the threshing floor of Araunah the Jebusite.” 19Following Gad’s instructions, David went up, as the LORD had commanded. 20When Araunah looked down, he saw the king and his servants coming toward him; and Araunah went out and prostrated himself before the king with his face to the ground. 21Araunah said, “Why has my lord the king come to his servant?” David said, “To buy the threshing floor from you in order to build an altar to the LORD, so that the plague may be averted from the people.” 22Then Araunah said to David, “Let my lord the king take and offer up what seems good to him; here are the oxen for the burnt offering, and the threshing sledges and the yokes of the oxen for the wood. 23All this, O king, Araunah gives to the king.” And Araunah said to the king, “May the LORD your God respond favorably to you.” 24But the king said to Araunah, “No, but I will buy them from you for a

  • price; I will not offer burnt offerings to the LORD my God that cost me nothing.” So David bought the threshing floor and the oxen for fifty shekels of silver. Acts 2:42-47 (NRSV) They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers. 43Awe came upon everyone, because many wonders and signs were being done by the apostles. 44All who believed were together and had all things in common; 45they would sell their possessions and goods and distribute the proceeds to all, as any had need. 46Day by day, as they spent much time together in the temple, they broke bread at home and ate their food with glad and generous hearts, 47praising God and having the goodwill of all the people. And day by day the Lord added to their number those who were being saved.
