From the Pastor’s Desk...

I’d like to use my column in the newsletter to talk about Ministry Shares, because it is very important for the entire church to understand where we stand with our shared ministries.

These funds enable United Methodists to do together what no church, district, or annual conference could do alone. By paying our apportionments in full, we are taking part in many different ministries all around the world that we could not do on our own. These funds help us to support valuable ministries beyond our immediate context. Ministry Shares support outreach programs, our bishops, seminary and college students, and much more.

What are “Ministry Shares”? Plain and simple, these funds are the amount each local church pays its annual conference to support international, national and re-gional missions.

Why don’t we just do it ourselves? Whereas it may be tempting to think that we can accomplish the same goals if we just ‘go it alone,” we would never be able to spread the gospel or the love of Christ as far and to as many people as we do when we are “connected”. By uniting our efforts, and being wise with each dollar we have, we can reach more people doing more good. One way we recently experienced this effort was by cutting administrative cost by being better stewards with our newsletter by going to digital copies for those who do not desire printed copies. This may not seem a big step, but it reflects an attitude of benevolence as we can put dollars saved towards our Ministry Share commitment. By being in the Connection we are recognizing that our loyalty to God’s Kingdom is bigger and goes much further than our local concerns. And we recognize that others in the Methodist faith are connected to us, whether they are down the street, or on the other side of the globe.

So Where Do Our Ministry Shares Go? These go into several funds, all designed to further the work of the church in building the Kingdom. Some of the funds are:

The World Service Fund: This fund is the essential core of United Methodist outreach. Giving to this fund empowers evangelistic efforts, stimulates Bible study and spiritual commitment. Apportionments encourage church growth and discipleship, and help God’s children everywhere.

Ministerial Education Fund: This fund is dedicated to preparing men and women for effective ministry.

Interdenominational Cooperation Fund: This fund is dedicated to working with other denominations in doing God’s work.

General Administration Fund: This support the criti-cal administrative functions of the Church.

Episcopal Fund: The Episcopal Fund is to support the work of Bishops all over the world who are expected to speak to the world as representatives of our church, and more importantly, Christ.

Black College Fund: The United Methodist church supports 111 historically black colleges and universi-ties as a part of the church’s commitment to ensuring all people will able to obtain a sound education.

Africa University Fund: The first fully accredited Methodist institution on the African continent. The university’s goal is to provide quality education and to encourage students to grow spiritually and to develop strong values and leadership skills.

This gives a bigger picture view of why each church can make a difference for the ministry as a whole. As we have begun a new year of ministry being Empowered by God to Love and Serve One Another, it is a good time to be reminded of our call as a benevolent church.

2015 represented a significant increase in what was paid. With that in mind, our goal as a connectional church is to be able to pay in full within three years. I look forward in working toward this goal with you as we seek to make disciples of Jesus Christ for the transfor-mation of the world!

In Jesus’ Service,

Pastor Kevin

Sunday School News

The Women’s Classled by Mary Lou Forster

We are continuing to look at Twelve Women Of The Bible, which is a study about 12 familiar and not-so-familiar women: Gomer, Martha, Mary the mother of Jesus, Rebekah, Abigail, Leah, Mary of Bethany, Mary Magdalene, Eve, Hannah, the Wom-an at The Well, and the Syrophoeni-cian Woman.

The Men’s Classled by Bill Skura

This class is completing their study using the resource Stepping Up from Iron Sharpens Iron. Be watching in the happenings sheet in the Sunday morning bulletin for information about their next study.

The Family Classled by Tracy & Jeff Maybray

This class is studying The Power Of A Praying Parent by Stormie Omar-tian.

The Discipleship Classled by Bud Vredenburg

This group will be starting a new study April 3. The eight-week study will be based on Phil Moore’s book, The Bible in 100 Pages.

Phil Moore shares “most people want to discover the message of the Bible. The problem is they are simply too busy. It just looks far too long. When they do read it, they often find

it hard to see the woods for the trees among its 66 books, 1,189 chapters and 31,102 verses.

“That’s why The Bible in 100 Pages is so im-portant. It will help you to see the big picture in God’s great

story. It will help you to see the Bible with fresh eyes.”

All are welcome to join us as we are challenged and encouraged and enlightened as we discuss the big pic-ture of the Bible’s message.

God’s Girls Classled by Donna Benstead

This class will begin a new study after Easter with Jeremiah — Daring to Hope in an Unstable World. In this six week study, Melissa Spoelstra of-fers encour-agement and help for navi-gating the uncertainties and chal-lenges of life.

By exam-ining God’s words of instruction to His way-ward people through the prophet Jeremiah, the class will discover six guidelines for living that can help us overcome fear, worry, doubt and bit-terness as we surrender our wills to God and put hope in Him alone.

Sunday Morning Adult Small Group Studies

Children’s Sunday School

The month of April will find the boys and girls learning their key Bible Verse: “Happy are those who don’t see and yet believe.” (John 20:29) We will be studying about: The Road To Emmaus with its key word being “Believe,” Thomas Be-lieves with its key word “Doubt,” The Great Com-mission with its key word “Commission,” and Be-lievers Share with its key word, “Share.”

Our children are continuing to bring money for their cur-rent mission project through World Vision of buying fruit trees and soccer balls for children in under developed coun-tries. So far they have collected $300! We want to thank the Doud Family for donating the coins that were found around Donna’s house to our mission project in memory of Donna Doud.

The Pastor’s Bibles study group will begin studying the book Fresh Wind, Fresh Spirit by Pastor Jim Cymbala on Tuesday, April 5 at 9:30 a.m. as a 10-week spring study group.

We realize that many who may be inter-ested in this study cannot attend at this time slot. With that in mind we would like to offer other options for those who may be available at other times during the week.

Please contact Pastor Kevin if you would be interested in taking part in this transfor-mational discipleship opportunity at another time.

Here’s a preview of the study:

Pastor Jim Cym-bala believes that Je-sus wants to renew his people to call us back from spiritual dead ends, apathy, and lukewarm re-ligion. Cymbala knows the differ-

ence firsthand. Thir-ty-five years ago his own church, the Brook-lyn Tabernacle, was a struggling congregation of twenty. Then they began to pray … God began to move … street-hardened lives by the hundreds were changed by the love of Christ … and today they are more than ten thousand strong. The story of what happened to this broken-down church in one of Amer-ica’s toughest neighborhoods points the way to new spiritual vitality in the church and in your own life. Fresh Wind, Fresh Fire shows what the Holy Spirit can do when believers get serious about prayer and the gospel. As this compelling book reveals, God moves in life-changing ways when we set aside our own agendas, take him at his word, and listen for his voice.

Mission Moments

From the Ingersolls...March 4, 2016

Dear Praying Partners,What a blessing you have been in our lives and ministry! As Keith and I (David) ministered to the Lord at the IGNITE

Conference, the Lord ministered to us and gave increased free-dom to pursue Him. Please pray that we would continue to follow His leading with humility, freedom and boldness.

David led the Upper Room PRAYER time and the three new pastors who came were moved by what they saw God doing. Pray for the pastors, leaders and faithful followers of Jesus Christ in our area to come together, encounter God, be revived and have a renewed vision to reach the lost.

It was a joy to watch Stephen at his interview and how he con-nected with people at Gordon College. He was one of 70 urban honor students interviewing for ten full academic scholarships. Pray that God would provide Stephen so that he will be able to go where the Father desires him to go in college in preparation for his Kingdom assignment/s.

Today and Saturday David is attending a World Impact Urban Church plant school to see if we (Carol and I) might be a part of the urban, multicultural church plant. Pray that God will lead and make it clear to us.

Thank you for ministering to us and with us!

David, Carol, Joshua, Stephen and Rebekah

Thank you, you've been a great big help.

We want you to know that we appreci-ate your faithful prayers and gifts for our family and ministry in Newark. There are no words to express our gratitude for nearly 30 years of loving support.

We are excited about the way the Lord is opening doors for ministry on two fronts. David continues to work to bring pastors together in a prayer movement, seeking the Lord for renewal and revival in Newark. We have also been asked to work with a new church plant team, focusing on men and women who have been incarcerated.

Supporting them and their families with the love of Christ is crucial as they rebuild their lives. We hope to visit you in 2016 and share more about what God is doing in Newark.

May the Lord continue to strengthen and encourage you all as you serve Him.

In Christ, Carol & David Ingersoll.

(The church has extra prayer cards for anyone who would like one!)

April showers bring May flowers. But those April showers also bring flooding to many areas of our country.

That’s why it is so important for the Harris Hill United Methodist Church to have a full supply of UMCOR Cleaning Buckets on hand.

When the call comes in, they can ship completed buckets to the Mis-sion Barn in Eastbrook, Pa. who then passes on any extras to UMCOR Headquarters at Sager Brown in Baldwin, La.

How can you help? During the month of April there will be a display in the Green Room where you can help contribute items to fill a clean-ing bucket. Take as many post-its as you want and return the article(s) by the end of the month. Want to know more about UMCOR cleaning buckets? Visit http://harrishillumc.org/go/index.html

Mission Moments/Announcements

Please continue to be in prayer for Dan and Miranda Vaccaro, who are currently serving as full time missionary teachers at the K-12 Christian Academy in Malawi.

There will be special collections taken up to help support them on April 3, May 1, and June 5. Checks can be made out to Spring-ville UMC or to African Bible College and will be forwarded on.

Special collections for Voccaros coming up

Thank you for your generous support of the two special collections we held in March. The One Great Hour of Sharing yielded $321 which will help to keep donations to UMCOR (United Methodist Committee on Relief) free from admin-istrative costs. The March 13 collection for Dan and Miranda Vac-caro brought in $382 which will be sent to African Bible College who will in turn put it toward the $1800 per month that they need to live on while they are working in Malawi as teachers in the K-12 Christian Academy.

Thanks for yourgenerous support...

The Tuesday morning men's group will be having a Saturday morn-ing volunteer day at the Trading Post on Saturday, April 16 from 10 a.m. to 2 pm. and are encouraging other men of the church to join us for the day!

EnGendered: God’s Gift ofGender Difference in Relationship

by Sam A. AndreadesThis book is a winsome

and eloquent theology of gender, bringing clar-ity and compassion to a gender-confused soci-ety. Writing in a calm, confident, and positive tone, and concluding that gender difference is a gift from God that should be celebrated, enGendered goes a long way in speaking the truth in love and

avoiding the shrill tone of con-troversy and emotionalism that too often characterizes discussions on this topic.

To summarize, this volume speaks to Christians who want to know what the Bible says about gender differ-ence and why. It also is of value for people who struggle with same-sex attraction but want to follow Christ.

“We, at First United Methodist, are extremely fortunate that we have use of the materials in the church library. Coming from a family of readers, I ap-preciate what is in the library.

Two purposes for reading are the gathering of information and pleasure, While I sometimes read to learn, mostly I read for pleasure. Author Jan Karon writes about Father Tim and his min-istry. Philip Gulley writes about Sam, a Quaker minister. These books are laced with humor.

Books about the Amish can be both full of information and offer pleasure to the reader. There are many good au-thors in this area.

Books about the Yada, yada prayer group highlight group closeness, Each book in the series stresses prayer,

Leisha Kelly writes about a family facing hardships during the depression. They learn to live off the land and even-tually connect with neighbors and make a home for several neighbors.

This a only a small part of what the library offers. Check it out.”

- Jean Voigt

Meet Jean Voigt, the lady who has read more books in our church library than anyone else. Stop in the church library and view some of her favorite reads in the showcase.

The Wedding Chapelby Rachel Hauck

Rachel Hauck is a new fic-tion author in our library Jimmy Westbrook is a now retired famous football play-er and coach, who built a wedding chapel by hand for Collette Greer whom he lost many years ago. A local re-altor recommends Jimmy sell the chapel. Collette is a famous 82-year-old ac-tress. When she hears that the chapel is for sale, she is compelled to go see it.

What has kept her away all these years? Taylor Branson is a commercial photographer who meets ups with advertising representative Jack Forester. They are impulsive and quickly elope. Within six months they are not getting along. Will they be able to make it work? Taylor photographs the Chapel for Architectural Digest. She inherits her grandmother’s home and finds a letter her grandmother wrote about a secret. What is this secret?

Library CornerThe Secret Thoughts of an Unlikely Convert: An English Professor’s Journey into Christian Faith

by Rosaria Champagne Butterfield

The Secret Thoughts of an Unlikely Convert: An English Professor’s Jour-ney into Christian Faith by Rosaria Champagne Butterfield is a challeng-ing read for any Chris-tian. A radical, feminist professor at Syracuse University, living in a lesbian relationship, and raised Catholic, Rosaria met a Christian pastor, who shared the Gospel with her for years and

years in his home, “not in some used-carsalesman approach, but in an organic, spontaneous, and compassionate way.” Rosaria’s thoughts on conversion, repentance, worship, homeschooling and lifestyle choices will challenge and inspire the reader. A book made for discussion!!

Living by the Book: The Art and Science of Reading the Bible

by Howard G. & William D. Hendricks

This book invites you on one of the greatest adventures of your life – the journey through Scriptures. In the Bible you interact with a living God who wants a per-sonal relationship with you. And no special skills are needed. If you can read, you can glean important

insight from Scripture. In simple step-by-step fashion, you will learn how to let ob-serve – let Scripture speak to you, interpret-develop the tools to properly understand Biblical text, and apply-learn how to let Scripture transform your life.
