Carnations are handed out to all worshipers as symbols of those persons we are honoring in prayer. A bell is tolled and pictures shown of those who have passed away since our last All Saints’ Sunday. A Letter From Pastor Dave

“Since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us run with perseverance the race that is set before us, looking to Jesus the pioneer and perfecter of our faith.” (Hebrews 12:1-2)

Sunday, October 30, is All Saints Sunday when we remember loved ones and mentors, now passed, who have inspired us toward the faith and values we have today. Carnations are handed out to all worshipers as symbols of those persons we are honoring in prayer. A bell is tolled and pictures shown of those who have passed away since our last All Saints’ Sunday. My sermon, “Balcony People,” is based on the text sited above; the vision the Apostles Creed calls “the communion of the saints.”

Celebrating those who have inspired our faith reminds us that there are so many who have given their time, talent, treasure, and prayers over the years to make this church what it is today. On Communion Sunday, November 6, Pastor Kyle will be preaching on that memorable verse from Joshua 24:15 “Choose this day whom you will serve...”

All this leads up to Stewardship Sunday, November 13, when members are asked to come forward and put their pledge cards into Dedication Baskets that express our commitment of Time, Talent, and Treasure to further Christ’s work at First Pres and in the world. May this important season in our church’s life result in 2017 being the best year ever in fulfilling our mission in this community.

First Light Men’s Collaborative Colossians and Philemon: A 12-Week Study (Knowing the Bible) by Christopher A. Beetham (Author), J. I. Packer (Editor)

The books of Colossians and Philemon complement each other as two New Testament texts that gloriously display the gospel and its implications for how God’s people should live today. This short guide will help readers see how both letters resonate with the apostle Paul’s overriding passion: magnifying Jesus Christ as the supreme manifestation of God’s redemptive purposes.

First Pres Preschool is now accepting applications for the 2017 – 2018 school year from Church members. Priority registration is open to church members and returning fami-lies beginning November 1st and ending November 30th. Open enrollment to the public begins in January. We offer preschool programs for children from the ages of 2 ½ to six years of age. For more information on the preschool, take a look at our preschool link on the Church website www.firstpreswheaton.org.

Call Chandra Gravit at (630) 668-5147 x27 to request infor-mation or set up a classroom visit. Our preschool classes usually fill soon after priority enrollment ends so if you are a Church member or attending our Church and you are think-ing about preschool for your child, now is the time to contact the preschool.

November is a month that is rich in teaching opportunities. All of our classes are busy learning about the Thanksgiving holidays, including our early ancestors, the pilgrims, and Na-tive Americans. Each classroom ends the month celebrating Thanksgiving with their own ‘feast’ provided and created by our children.

All of our enrichment programs are well underway for the school year. Our music program taught by Linida Bulifante in the afternoon includes singing, musical instruments and an introduction to primary music theory. Lynn Nuzzo is join-ing us monthly for a special story time where she shares a Bible story in a creative and fun way with our preschoolers. We are happy to have her in our classrooms! Our art enrich-ment program, taught by Lauri Malee, is full of preschool-ers enjoying various art mediums and being creative as only preschoolers can.

Victory Preschool Sports Camp is also off and running with their soccer camp for our three, four and five year olds. This is always a favorite with the children and we will be offering preschool sports camps from now until the end of the year for our preschoolers.

Mission

Shower the Seniors with Love Every year, 1st Presbyterian Church of Wheaton partners with Outreach Community Center and Gary Methodist Church to host a Christmas luncheon for the Older Adults Program. 1st Pres has helped each year by providing volunteers who contribute in many ways: helping with set-up or clean-up, making food, serving seniors at their tables, providing transportation, as well as making financial donations to make the day possible. For the seniors, this annual event is the highlight of the holiday season, and for many, their only celebration. A $12 donation will provide one older adult of Outreach Community Center a place at their annual Christmas Luncheon table.

Be looking out for the holiday tablescape display where you will find donation envelopes. It's easy to make a donation - put your check in the envelope provided and drop it in the mail or leave it in the church office. Make checks payable to Outreach Community Center and write Older Adults Program on the memo line.

This year the luncheon will be held on Friday, December 16, for approximately 150 older adults from south Carol Stream. Our guests will enjoy a traditional meal with all the trimmings, enjoy a holiday musical presentation by Monroe Middle School Chamber Orchestra, and receive an individual gift. Your donation is greatly appreciated for this event.

Thank you for helping to shower our seniors with love. If you have any questions, please contact Kim Van Oss (630-690-4820) or Alice Lechiara (630-462-0536) or Linda Hawkins (at Outreach 630 - 260 - 7600).

The High School ministries are well under way this fall, and we have been having a great time together, building our friendships and growing deeper in faith. Many of our students have been bringing friends, and the friends keep coming back. It’s exciting! October was busy. At the beginning of the month, we had a wild time at Bring Your Parent to WF night, where we got to show our parents what WF is all about. We had a fun group of parents and students playing Giant Tic-Tac-Toe and Lover’s Leap, followed by snacks, worship, devotional time and small groups. Mid-month, we were blessed to confirm 16 students into the membership of First Pres. The services were led by our very own WF band (with the help of Paul Burgess) and student pulpit associates. It was a very meaningful service to the confirmands and their families, but was also an uplifting, hopeful service for the entire church family. God is so good!

The end of the month brought Small Group Fun Night, and the Fall Retreat, where we talked about what it looks like to live out Ephesians 5:1, “Imitate God, therefore, in everything you do, because you are his dear children.” More details about the retreat next month…

Join us in November for exciting installments of WF on Sunday nights, from 6-8:15 p.m., and Guys’ and Girls’ Small Groups on Wednesday nights from 6:30-8;00 p.m. And don’t forget Sunday AM, between services on Sunday mornings! Friends are always welcome and encouraged to join us for all High School Ministry activities!

Save the dates for some special events coming up:Alumni Pie Night – Wednesday November 23 from 8-9:30 p.m. All college students are welcome to come back to visit with the current HS students and WF alumni, eat pie, and play a few games with your old buddies! I know you miss playing Four On A Couch! I hope you can make it!

Progressive Dinner – Sunday, December 11, 5-9:00 p.m. Get all dressed up and we’ll have a fun night eating appetizers, entrees, and desserts at different homes around town. This event is one that the students really look forward to attending! We may even have a visitor from the North Pole!Hot Breakfast – Sunday, December 18 between services in the kitchen. Pancakes and bacon...Need I say more?

YTD 2016September 30, 2016

As we move toward the end of the year, our financial outlook is better than September of 2015, but we still have some work to do. It is noteworthy that our expenses continue below budgeted levels of spending, even with reductions in 2016. Generous participation in supporting the ministry and mission at First Pres – investing in today and tomorrow – will pave the way toward a strong financial foundation. Let us challenge ourselves to step up our giving during these remaining months of 2016 as we continue the marvelous work we have been called to at First Pres, in this community and throughout the world.

Presbyterian Disaster Assistance Please support those affected by Hurricane Matthew. The category 4 hurricane has already been blamed for hundreds of deaths on the southeastern US coast. Earliest assess-ments confirm extensive damage in southwestern Haiti and eastern Cuba. PDA will immediately begin working alongside established partners to respond to this latest crisis provide essential food, water, and supplies for impacted communities and vil-lages. The needs for the response will be great. God’s people are once again called on to stand in the “GAP”—Give. Act. Pray.

December newsletter submissions are due by November 15. Email them to [email protected]. This is a monthly publication. If you move please call the church office with your new address.

Stewardship This fall the Stewardship emphasis is on Stewardship as The Best Investment We Will Ever Make. We received encouragement from Pastor Dave in the October newsletter to consider how we are being called to give through faithful planning. We are hearing and reading church members’ stories of the amazing ways they have invested their time, talent and treasure in mission and ministry.

The benefits of our collective investments in the mission and ministry of First Pres is evidenced by the ways lives are impacted through Worship & Music, Adult Education, Sunday school and Logos, WF High School ministry, Mission Outreach, Small Groups, Deacons and Caring Ministries, Women’s and Men’s Ministries and many, many more.

You will soon be receiving a letter from the Stewardship team with a giving card.. Let us consider together the amazing impact of each and every financial investment we make in God’s Kingdom here at First Pres, in the community and around the world, and return our giving cards on Stewardship Sunday, November 13. Praise God from whom all blessings flow.
