Stewardship Update

2 Corinthians 8: 1-5 & 7...“We want you to know, brethren, about the grace of God which has been shown in the churches of Macedo-nia, for in a severe test of affliction, their abundance of joy and their extreme poverty have overflowed in a wealth of liberality on their part. For they gave according to their means, of their own free will, begging us earnestly for the favor of taking part in the re-lief of the saints, and this, not as we expected, but first they gave themselves to the Lord and to us by the will of God. Now as you excel in everything in faith, in utterance, in knowledge, in all earnestness, and in your love for us, see that you excel in this gracious work also.”

The Macedonians responded to collect funds for the Chris-tians in Jerusalem. The Macedonians were people who had given themselves as well as their resources to Christ. They became generous givers (even though they were poor) because they first gave of themselves to Christ. Can you look into the mirror and honestly say you have given yourself first to Christ? Only then will you become a gener-ous giver, not only in money, but in your resources (talents) as well. Let us mimic the Macedonians’ mindset, as a Church, in steadfast giving of monies, resources, and ourselves to Christ. Let us continue to make First Luther-an a strong Christ-centered church 100 years from now.

*Help from First Lutheran men will be needed!

Because many hands make light work and because we are a congregation ac-tively serving our members and greater community, we are asking each member, as disciples of First Lutheran Church, to complete a “Time and Talent” survey.

We are seeking responses from age groups confirmation through adult. We have designed the survey to help you to find the areas you are able to share with First Lutheran Church. You can volunteer in as many areas as you are interested in. This information will be used by the church committees to help grow and strengthen our church.

We would like to get 100 responses back by March 9th. We have the link on the church website, as well as paper copies in the back of the church. Please contact Sara Blake ([email protected] or 319-240-6535) if you have questions about the survey or need help filling it out. Each family member (confirmation age through adult) needs to fill out their own copy of the survey. If you have not been contacted by a committee member about your interest by April 1st, please let us know and we will find out more information for you. Thank you!

March Hymn of the Month: “What a Friend We Have in Jesus”

What a friend we have in Jesus, all our sins and griefs to bear! What a privilege to carry everything to God in prayer! Oh, what peace we often forfeit; oh, what needless pain we bear all because we do not carry everything to God in prayer.

This hymn was originally written by preacher Joseph M. Scriven in 1855 as a poem to comfort his mother, who was living in Ireland while he was away in Canada. The poem was at first published anonymously, but Scriven did receive full credit in the 1880s. Charles Crozat Converse composed the tune to the hymn in 1868.

The hymn can be found in multiple languages around the world with many versions and lyrics. It is also noted that during WWI the lyrics were changed to reflect the thoughts of soldiers.

It has been said that Scriven’s text clearly is derived from his own life experiences. And though the text is not considered to be great poetry, it has spiritual appeal and great effect with the repeated phrase, “take it to the Lord in prayer.” Because of the hymn’s encouragement to “pray without ceasing,” it is held close to the hearts of many Christians. The sentimental gospel style and strong popularity of “What a Friend We Have in Jesus” retains its place in modern hymnals.

The 100-Year Celebration Continues!

Psalm 126:3 - "The Lord has done great things for us, and we are filled with Joy." We have been loved and blessed. Help us to cherish the great memories and joy experienced at First Evangelical Lutheran Church. Take a memory card from the table by Holy Grounds Coffee in the narthex/welcome area and write a favorite memory or two of First Lutheran Church. Include your name and leave the card in the basket. We will be sharing stories before services in March and also during Fellowship on Sunday, March 15th.

100th Anniversary T-shirts are available for purchase. They are $12.00 each. We have a limited supply of t-shirts available for sale now, but we’re taking orders for more. A sample t-shirt and order form is on display in the back of church. Let us know if you have any questions. The proceeds from the t-shirts will be used for the events that we are doing to celebrate our 100-year anniversary! SAVE the DATE: Sunday, April 26th - 100th Anniversary Celebration at the Del. Co. Fairgrounds. Worship at 10:30, lunch at 12:15, silent auction, and fellowship. For our event in April, we are looking for Silent Auction items. Funds raised from the silent auction will be for property updates including a new outdoor sign. Items could include: handmade crafts/sewing, woodworking, gift cards, theme baskets, labor donations to name a few. Please see Kurt Palmer 563-920-9323, Meg Palmer, or Connie Wright with any donations or questions.

Connection First @ FLC

In last month’s LL, we began the discussion of “why” sharing the gospel is im-portant. This month, we are going to begin the discussion of “how” to share the love of Jesus Christ with others! One way to get started is with this verse…Galatians 5:22-23 - “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law”.

Let’s start with the first fruit of the Spirit…love. God’s word shows us so many ways that Jesus loved others well. He is our best inspiration and it only takes a moment to read some of the gos-pel and see how he opened his heart to others. It is also a wonderful way to feel His love!

How does that translate for us today in the hustle & bustle of life? It’s taking a moment to smile at the person who helps you at a store. It’s writing a note and letting someone know you prayed for them today. It’s listening well to a friend and offering to pray with them when they are hurting. It’s inviting others to join you for Alpha, a bible study, a church service or event, or even just a cup of coffee to talk about life. It’s asking the Holy Spirit to fill you with the fruit of love and to show you the way to share it. It’s believing that God’s timing is always perfect, and we are here to share His love and He will change hearts.

Connection first…it is the way we meet people where they are at, love them well, and bring them into the loving arms of Jesus. “Let all you do be done in love”. 1 Corinthians 16:14

Blessings, Lisa Guetzko
