“May This Year Be The Best Year Of Our Lives!”

In reading through John Wesley’s journal I have always been struck by his growing awareness of God’s purposes to renew the people for mission and ministry, particularly around the turn of each year. On more than one occasion, you can find a hopeful John Wesley (even into the 9th decade of his life) writing these words on January 1st: “Whether this be the last or no, may it be the best year of my life!” and “May I begin to live today!”

A tradition began in early Methodism led by Wesley where the people would gather for a worship service at the beginning of each yaer to renew their efforts to fulfill God’s mission on earth. This service sometimes took place during the late hours of New Year’s Eve and was called the ‘Watchnight Service.’ Regardless if it took place through the transition of when we see the ball drop on Times Square or in the first few days of the year, this service was intended to renew the covenant life together of the people. Accompanying it was a prayer of covenant renewal that still graces our hymn book - #607. I invite you with me to make this our prayer and speak it in sincerity as we seek to make 2015 “the best year of our lives”:

I am no longer my own, but thine.Put me to what thou wilt, rank me with whom thou wilt.

Put me to doing, put me to suffering.Let me be employed by thee or laid aside for thee,

Exalted for thee or brought low for thee.Let me be full, let me be empty.

Let me have all things, let me have nothing.I freely and heartily yield all things

To thy pleasure and disposal.And now, O glorious and blessed God,

Father, Son, and Holy Spirit,Thou art mine, and I am thine. So be it.

And the covenant which I have made on earth,Let it be ratified in heaven. Amen.

With Wesley, may we gain the vision that this day is a beginning – may we, with him, “begin to live today!”

ARISE Jackson, a new church/school partnership program for Jackson-Madison County schools, is recruiting volunteers to invest one hour a week to help a 2nd grader learn the foundational words of reading. During and after-school times are available beginning February 2. No tutoring experience is necessary.

January 15 is the deadline for returning background check forms to Jackson-Madison County School District. Training will be January 22, 12-1 p.m. and 5:30-6:30 p.m. (only one session required).

The Department of Justice calls reading failure "the link between academic failure and delinquency, violence and crime." Our church is supporting this ministry, and we need you. and strength in our Sunday School classes where good teaching is taking a more central position of importance. Our seniors continue to be highly active and engaged. Our women’s and men’s ministries are evolving into relevant and new groups intent on providing places of belonging, accountability and care. Our kitchen volunteers and Leslie Lewis give so sacrificially of their time, talents and energies to serve others. Our music ministries –led so ably by Darian Krimm and Amanda Larsen-Wells are recognized regionally for overall excellence. I could go on and I know I am neglecting to name additional names but time just won’t allow…so I’ll just say that our leadership seems to be stronger than ever. There is just so much to look forward to in 2015—isn’t there?

If you see me moving too quickly or getting too excited in the coming year, I hope you will help remind me of my promise to listen more carefully and attend more closely:“I will listen to what the Lord God is saying, for he is speaking peace to his faithful people and those who turn their hearts to him.” –Psalm 85:8

2014 Year in Review...Thoughts on a New Year

My devotional reading for today, this very first day of 2015, included this refrain:“I will listen to what the Lord God is saying, for he is speaking peace to his faithful people and those who turn their hearts to him.” – Psalm 85:8

I spent some time today on this New Year’s Day, reflecting on the year that is now past. I considered all the changes in our world and in our city. I thought about my two children who are all grown up now and on their own. I give thanks for their independence but, honestly, miss their dependence. I uttered a prayer of thanksgiving for my wife, Lane, my best friend and confidante. Later this year we will celebrate 35 years of marriage.

I considered the changes in our church in the past year. We bid a fond farewell to Rev. David Hollis and Rev. Mary Beth Bernheisel and their families as they both went on—well prepared by you-- to new challenges. We welcomed the talented Rev. Jeff Rudy, along with wife, Carrie, and their children, Sam and Julianne. I thought of the continued evolution of our worship styles as we seek to reach a changing world with the “good news” of Jesus Christ. I remembered the good and intentional work we engaged in to strengthen marriages and families in our community, including bringing the nationally-recognized Drs. Les and Leslie Parrott to Jackson. I thought of our new initiatives including “Kids at First” which is meeting the needs of parents in our community for high quality nurture of young children. I thought also of the Andrews Chapel campus and our ongoing, honest struggle to comprehend and discern a “new thing” God is seeking to do in the Huntersville community.

I considered the many funerals of devoted members of Jackson First that I have participated in during the year and I was deeply saddened. I considered the deepening bonds of friendship I have come to share with so many of you and spent considerable time agonizing over the (too many) misunderstandings which have taken place in our life together this year past. While this can certainly never be completely avoided, it

does always cause great pain. I gave thanks for the hard-working, selfless and devoted staff of our church. Never is any job beneath them and never do they fail to do their very best. Mostly, I thought of the triumphs, the struggle and the disappointments of 2014. I considered what, if anything, I should say—as your pastor—about the year that was and the year to come?

Then, I understood that it wasn’t up to me to say anything, really. Perhaps I say too much, too often. My first priority should be to attend, to listen:

“I will listen to what the Lord God is saying, for he is speaking peace to his faithful people and those who turn their hearts to him.” –Psalm 85:8

I thought of this “cusp” time of the New Year. How everything seems to have, at least for a single day, slowed to a quiet and peaceful interlude. I was tempted to try and get my life “in order,” make some lists and get a head start on things for 2015. Maybe you felt the same pull, the same call to action? Then, I considered how many years I have rushed “headlong” into setting into motion my own plans without properly listening to that “still, small voice” which always desires better and greater things for me than I do for myself. So, I repeated the words again:

“I will listen to what the Lord God is saying, for he is speaking peace to his faithful people and those who turn their hearts to him.” –Psalm 85:8

I allowed myself to look forward to 2015 for just a few moments. I’ve gotten very excited about a sermon series Jeff and I are working on for January and February called “Four Parts of Grace.” It’s a study on our distinctive Wesleyan emphasis on grace and I know it is going to be helpful to so many. We are looking forward to confirming a great, large group of Confirmands this spring. The good work being done with our youth by Taylor Parimore and Charles Evans, along with our youth ministry team is leading us to new heights with our youth group. Jenni Thorn and the Children’s ministry team continue to move toward excellence in teaching and the spiritual formation of our children. (Please note: great teachers in training are needed for the growth to continue to take place so pray about how God might be calling you to serve). I perceive a growing seriousness

This commentary is by Dr. Patrick Teer who shared these words during the Stewardship Moment in worship services, September 21, 2014

Money is the subject, and we don't talk about it much around the church except for this time of year. For some, it's a time to just endure. For others, it’s a time to get through, to move on and get on about the business. But, for others it is an opportunity for discipline and for growth.

Jan and I feel that giving to the church is just one of the ways that we can grow into God's likeness. The instructions are really clear, aren't they? Ten-percent. Throughout the Bible the instructions are given from Leviticus, through the Gospels and beyond. It's the first ten-percent, isn't it? God wants our very best. He wants it right off the top. He doesn't really want what's left over. God doesn't want "if you have anything left at the end of the month."

Although the instructions are clear, God still gives us free will. He still gives us that choice to obey that instruction or not.

Growing in faith, for us, has meant growing in Bible study, growing in scripture reading, growing in service to God and to others through the church, through involvement in the church, through community service, and growing in our giving, striving for the best ten-percent right off the top.

So, tithing as a child for me was what my parents gave me before Sunday School or right before we came into church... a few coins. As a young person, when I started working a paper route, at EW James, at the Holiday Inn as a desk clerk, as a research technician, the discipline of tithing just didn't exist, or at least it was not a habit. I gave when I went to church. I gave what I had in my pocket, but it really was not something I thought a lot about. And you know, I was missing out and I didn't even know it.

Then as my life started changing and I started searching for God again, and God started letting me back in, things began to change. When Jan and I joined St. Luke's Methodist Church in Memphis, that's when giving became a much more serious part of our Christian walk. It took us a while. We needed that money, we thought. We were living on one teacher's salary, had young children, and I was in school. I mean, talk about a tight budget! We started really listening and believing in those sermons we heard about “every gift comes from God.” It was right around that time we received a small inheritance from an unknown Texas aunt we had never met before. (that was my side of the family by the way). So what could be a more clear response to a sermon than - just out of the blue - this check. We said,

okay... we hear you God. We're going to give right now, ten-percent off the top. We're going to give that to the church and you know what? It was easy. We didn't think about it, but it was easier than we thought it would be. So it really was a clear vision to us

then that we could see the blessings that we were receiving every day.

In raising our children in their pre-school and young elementary years, each boy had a bank. Each bank had three compartments: spending, saving, and church. We found that it was very important for them to learn that money you receive has three options. It's not just one. It's not just spending. You have three options with this money that you need to exercise. Also, as part of what we did in those years, Jan filled out a form annually for each child to have their own pledge card and envelope so that at the end of the year, they could see for themselves how they kept their pledge/promise to their home church.

Now, we were inconsistent but hopefully they will remember a time in their boyhood that the church was counting on them financially. If we had not started that habit of tithing when we thought we needed that money the most, we would not be as obedient now. Tithing has mirrored all parts of our Christian journey and now it's a source of fulfillment for us just like Bible study, devotion time, worship, Sunday School, and serving others. You know, these are all things we need. These are all things we want. These are all things that we must do and it's not doing it out of a requirement. It's doing it out of a yearning and out of a release. What a joy that is when we get that release. Thank you Jesus for that.

So here's what we do in our family: We keep a ledger. Just a simple paper ledger, not a fancy app or computer program or spreadsheet, and it works, It's a log that every time there's a deposit (direct deposit, check, interest payment, whatever) that has a column. Next to that column is the tithe column. So, boom, ten-percent, it's in the tithe column; it's out of my hands ready to work for God. That feels good and right.

Wherever you find yourself today, see if God is calling you. He may be calling you to grow. He may be calling you to be about his work. Definitely he's calling us to reach out of our comfort zones.

New! Child Security Check-in System

You asked for it and here it is! Thanks to a generous gift from the Foundation Committee, beginning Wednesday, January 7, we will start using our new child check-in system for Sundays and Wednesdays. The safety of your children is important to us and this system will help us better care for your children while they are in the building. Kiosks will be set up in the nursery, welcome center and children’s wing. Volunteers will be available to help make the transition as smooth as possible.

What you need to know:1. Parents will have to check in their kids and

they will have to have a label before they can enter the nursery or gathering room. Children are not allowed to check themselves in.

2. All nursery age children must be checked in using the kiosk in the nursery.

3. All children ages 3-5th grade must be checked in using the kiosk at the welcome desk or in the children’s wing. 4th and 5th graders will be allowed to leave on their own after class with parents’ permission. Please let your child’s teacher know before class.

4. The parent will give their child’s label that has their name on it to teacher to place on their class’ clip board

5. Parents must present the “parent label” to pick up their child.

6. If you need someone else to pick up your child (ex. An older sibling), please write on the parent badge “I give permission for ________ to pick up __________.” And sign it. Give this badge to the person picking up your child so they can present it to the teacher.

How to check in your child(ren):1. Once at the kiosk, you may look up your

family by name or by the last four digits of your phone number.

2. Select the child(ren) you are checking in and click “print badges”

3. Select the number of parent badges you will need. (You will need one for each child)

4. Give the label with your child’s name on it to their teacher. Keep the parent badge to turn in when you pick up your child.

The account is in Genesis 34, which retells her journey. The book has been out a while, but the movie is out with a two part miniseries, is being shown this month on Lifetime, so you may want to try to see it before our meeting
