Welcome to the 2017 school year and our new school Central Yorke! Who knew where we were going to be 12 months ago.

Our kids are excited, our school community proud of what we have achieved and the staff renewed with an energy to provide an engaging and relevant education to our leaders of tomorrow.

While each of our campuses have great traditions and pride, our new school will allow for our cohort to create their own traditions and identity that someday their children will be a part of.

If you look around both campuses you will see many changes already completed as well as in the pipeline to occur. Maitland will be looking at getting a new reception area, while Pt Pearce will be looking at new offices and toilets. Our goal is to make Central

Yorke an innovative learning space that encourages both staff and students to push the boundaries and take risks.

Our Early Years students are already talking about how cool our school is and our Senior Students are already planning the best way to achieve their SACE. At this point in time we have started with 235 students with more enrolling each day.

VaLueSCentral Yorke School have three school values that are relevant to the students of today and also represent the main values that our families hold dear to them.

I have asked staff that all conversations they have with students involve our values. I also ask parents to support these values with conversations they have with their children.

Things like 'please' and 'thankyou' are totally acceptable norms.

Student expectations over the 12 months have increased both in terms of academics and citizenship.

As I said to students on Monday, I am proud of the level they have achieved so far, but it is unacceptable to stay there.

aTTeNDaNCeIt is a requirement that students are here on time every day. The DECD benchmark for attendance is 95%. If your child is sick and can’t come to school, then please write a note in their diary and forward it onto their teacher. Days off for trips to Adelaide or birthdays are not legitimate excuses and really hinder young people from obtaining quality educational outcomes. Parents and staff need to foster positive relationships to make sure students are at school every day.

uNIFOrMOur uniform and colours are steeped in tradition and mean a lot to past students and the community. A uniform is a symbol of belonging, it is also a way of identifying and keeping students safe in the yard, but

mostly it represents pride, excellence and a respect of ones traditions and culture. Students at Central Yorke School are required to wear a uniform every day. If for some reason your child cannot be in

uniform, please write a note in their diary or negotiate something with leadership. I have been impressed with the uniform standard already on display.

I hope that all students are enjoying

their new school uniforms and will wear them with pride. Our jumpers are still being made and will hopefully be here before the weather turns. You will receive more information when we know more from our supplier.

Can parents also please note that grey is no longer a colour of our uniform. Students are required to wear black in regards to pants and shorts. Also the Governing Council have also ratified that stripes are also against uniform policy. I ask that parents please support us in regards to your children wearing the correct uniform. We have attached a copy of the uniform policy to the school app as well as in the front of the student diaries.

Students will be bringing home individual photos order envelopes next week.

Each student in years 7 - 12 will receive an ID card. Please make sure that your child is present for the photo.

WeLCOMe TO Our NeW STaFFWe welcome Shayla Vince who is teaching PLP, English and Workplace Practices. Shayla comes to us from Stansbury and is already making her mark at the school with her enthusiasm.

The Early Years Centre welcomes Mrs Kerry Richardson who has been teaching at Pt Pearce. Kerry comes to us with a Kindy, Junior Primary and Rural Care background. We are really excited to have Kerry with us to lead our Birth to Year 2 curriculum.

Welcome to 2017 in our fantastic new Early Learning Centre! We hope you enjoyed the holidays and had a relaxing Christmas and New Year with your loved ones.

Firstly, I would like to introduce myself, my name is Kerry Richardson and I am the Head of Early Years at Central Yorke School. I will be overseeing the Early Years Preschool Education at both the Maitland and Point Pearce Campuses. I am really looking forward to getting to know all of the preschool children and their families.

2017 STaFFMel Richards is our Early Years Teacher who you all know well and Jo Rawlings and Tammy Wheaton are our Preschool SSO’s. We understand that there have been many changes and if you have any questions regarding Preschool please feel free to speak with one of us.

TerM 1 PrOGraMOur Term 1 Preschool Program is focusing on building relationships with the children, creating a feeling of belonging in the centre and learning our centre routines.

Our first day of Kindy was great fun! We made an ocean in the water trough, we made some wonderful rose petal creations, we played in the sandpit, cooked in the new mud kitchen and made cakes, pizza and doughnuts with the playdough, just to name a few things. When we are playing we are learning lots!

Welcome to 2017 School Year from Point Pearce Campus. We are very pleased to see some extra students attending this term. We have six Junior

Primary Students and six Pre-school students. Our Occasional Care has four enrolments at this stage

INFOrMaTION FOr PareNTSFrom term 1 2017 parents and carers with children enrolled in a government preschool, rural care, occasional care, family day care or respite care service will be asked to provide evidence of their child’s immunisation status under a new procedure aimed at protecting children against vaccine preventable diseases (VPD).

Wow those holidays went quick! Now we have a busy Term One jam packed with sporting opportunities for all our students at Central Yorke School.

HOuSe CaPTaINSOur first item on our calendar is nominating and selecting of House Captains. Students will be given the information during the Homegroup double on the first day of school.

During this time teachers will outline the role and expectations of House Captains. We will be asking all students in Year 5/6 to nominate a boy and a girl who they think will suit the role (students can vote for themselves) these names are then put on the board and students choose whether to decline or accept the nomination.

This allows students who may be too shy to nominate themselves to be nominated by a peer and take on the nomination if they wish. Students who wish to accept the nomination will then take a Nomination form which they will then use to fill out a short speech which will be delivered in front of their house group the following Monday the 6th of February (Week 2) during elections.

Years 4/5/6 will vote for the Primary House Captain and Years 8/9/10/11/12 will vote for the Secondary House Captain once all nominees have completed their speeches.

Students who are successful in winning the role of House Captain will then be recognised at the Leaders Induction which will be held on Tuesday the 14th of February (Week 3).

SWIMMING Following this we will have R-8 Swimming from the 15th of February until the 21st of February (Week 3/4)

The Year 9/10 Aquatics camp will follow this on the 20th and 21st of February in Pt Vincent (Week 4).

The Year 11/12 SACE Aquatics Camp will then follow this on the 27th to the 1st of March (Week 5).

Our favourite SPLASH Carnival will be on Friday the 3rd of March (Week 5) and we are hoping for a warm day of weather and fierce competition!

CyS SPOrTS DayTHE BIG ONE – The Central Yorke School Sports Day will be held on Thursday the 16th of March (Week 7) so call those special family members and let them know to put it in their diary and lock in a day trip!

MILe eNDTo conclude what will be a VERY busy term we will then have students selected from the Secondary Sports Day to attend Mile End Athletics representing the Yorke Peninsula Team on the 10th of April (Week 11)

OTHer SPOrTING eVeNTSAs we are also endeavouring to keep parents as informed as possible with dates we have also included a small table of other events which are scheduled in for the rest of the year.

These dates are very much subject to change however if they do change they are usually around the date we had initially agreed upon. DECD schools are required to promote and develop learning environments that are safe and supportive. Students and staff may have anaphylactic (severe

allergic) conditions that include nut allergies.

This means that exposure at school may constitute a risk to their health and wellbeing. While it is not possible to guarantee that the school environment will be completely free of potential nut hazards, risks can be minimised by adhering within

reasonable guidelines. Given this context, CYS is developing Nut Awareness Guidelines for our R-12 students.

• To provide a safe school environment for all members of the school community

PareNTS• Are requested not to send foods along

to school with their children that contain nuts. This includes products such as ‘Nutella’, Peanut Paste, all types of nuts, peanut cooking oil and other foods such as Muesli bars that may contain nuts

• Will be informed of Central Yorke School’s Nut Awareness Guidelines at the commencement of each school year and reminders via the Newsletter and social media

• Will provide the school with a Health Care Plan if their child has a serious allergy to nuts

STuDeNTS• Are advised not to share food from

home• Are encouraged to wash hands before

and after eating

• Will supervise students during lunch eating time and be vigilant with regards to these guidelines

• Staff will be informed annually at the start of the school year and as part of the induction process for new staff

• New families to the school community will be informed via a copy of the guidelines in the enrolment package.

The school acknowledges that due to current food processing practices, it is impractical to eliminate nuts and nut products entirely from an environment where there is food. The emphasis is therefore on raising awareness and adopting the reasonable procedures termed as “Nut Awareness”.

It was a warm start to 2017 but a perfect opportunity for students to showcase their brand new CYS uniforms - and how good did those sparkling red and black tops look!

The school met in the PAC, which was packed to the rafters with students, parents and teachers.

After a welcome from Mr Keleher it was off to meet home-class teachers and settle into their new classrooms, many of which look completely refreshed with their new custom white paint job!

SCHOOL INFOrMaTION & NeWSFuND raISING FOr CyS CHaPLaINCyThe CYP Inter Church Council continues to support the Chaplaincy Programs at Maitland Area School and Ardrossan Area School, supplementing government funding with money raised in the community to provide extra hours in the schools. This is done with grain donations, cash donations and other various fundraising activities.

Before harvest we encouraged people to warehouse grain donations using the NGR numbers that have been set up for each school.

We have had limited response to this and would now like to give people the opportunity to transfer grain from their own warehouse to one of the contracts set up by Australian Grain Exports for each school. Very simply you can transfer any amount of any type of grain to one of the following contracts and AGE will ensure a market premium. We thank them for their generous support of the Chaplaincy programs.

If you would prefer to make a fully tax deductable cash donation that can now be done through Schools Ministry Group and all you need to do is make a cheque out to SMG MAS Chaplaincy or SMG AAS Chaplaincy and place it, or cash, in an envelope labelled the same way and leave it at the front office of the respective school or give it to a member of ICC . Please include a note with your name and postal details as it will be sent to SMG and they will then issue a receipt.
