    DO NOT under any circumstances use a rearward facing seat on

    passenger seats fitted with airbags.

    Frequently asked questions

    No child seat is escape proof

    Harness systems cannot be designed to be completely child proof and yet complywith the legal requirements of European Standard ECE R44. The harness must befastened and adjusted correctly at all times and children encouraged to remainwithin the harness system.

    Second-hand car seats

    The Hampshire Trading Standards Authority and Britax advise that child car seatsshould not be bought or sold second-hand. Many seats sold through localadvertising and car-boot sales have been found to be dangerous. Please dispose ofyour child car seat safely.

    Does the First Class Si fit all cars?All makes, models and years of car differ from one another and it is not

    guaranteed that this restraint will fit your car. For advice as to the suitability ofthis restraint for your car please call our Customer Service Helpline on 01264

    When do I need to use the newborn insert?The newborn insert is designed to allow babies to fit the seat comfortably whenused in rearward installation. It is designed for use from newborn to amaximum of 3 months.

    Can I put my child in the First Class Si facing forward before they reach 9kg inweight? No, the weight range corresponds to the European standard applying to carseats and the First Class Si has been tested and approved for forward facing

    installation from 9kg. In addition to weighing 9kg, your child should be able to situnaided with confidence.

    When do I adjust the harness to the correct height for my child?When you first purchase the First Class Si, then periodically as your child

    grows. (see Changing the height of the shoulder straps on page 8)

    Can I buy a spare cover in the same fabric I currently have?Spare covers are available in SELECTED fabrics only. To find out which fabricsyou can choose please contact our Customer Service Helpline on 01264 386034

    Using the First Class Si

    Preparing to install the First Class Si in the car

    IMPORTANT - You must adjust the height of shoulder straps of the harnessto the correct position for your child BEFORE installing the First Class Si in

    the car, as they cannot be adjusted once installed in the car.

    Adjusting the Harness

    Unfasten the buckle by pressing the redharness buckle button (a) and place your childin the seat. Fit the harness around your child.To fasten the buckle (b); first fit the two upper

    sections together as shown, then push themfirmly into the lower section until you hear apositive click.

    With one hand, press and hold down theharness release button. Then, with the otherhand below the chest pads, pull the shoulderstraps forwards.

    1

    Check the harness is not twisted, then gentlypull the harness up to tighten the lap sectionswhich are designed to fit low down on yourchild's body.

    Pull the adjuster strap forward making sure theharness is a comfortable but FIRM fit aroundyour child. Make sure the harness straps arenot twisted.

    Finally, pull both chest pads down from yourchild's shoulders onto the chest.

    5 REMEMBER - The chest padsare an important safety featureNEVER use the First Class Siwithout them.

    Now check the height of the shoulder straps as shown below.

    The shoulder straps MUST be threaded through the slots in the cover and shellnearest the top of your childs shoulders. If in any doubt always use the slot abovethe shoulder rather than below it.

    Once you reach the top slots your child may continue to use the seat until their eye

    line becomes level with the top of the seat shell or their weight exceeds 18kg.

    Changing the height of the shoulder straps

    IMPORTANT - You must adjust the height of the shoulder straps beforeyou install your child seat in a car.

    Removing your child from the First Class Si

    To help prevent the harness fromtwisting when you remove your childfrom the seat, loosen the harness bypulling below the chest pads, press the

    harness buckle button to undo theharness and then lay the shoulder strapson the outside of the seat as shown.

    Carefully place the First Class Si on the floor.With one hand press in and hold the harnessrelease button. With your other hand belowthe chest pads, pull the shoulder strapsforward as far as possible to loosen theharness.

    With the First Class Si fully reclined, open theseat-belt guard at the back of the shell. Pullthe yoke out from behind the seat and unhookone shoulder strap.

    Handy Tip- You will find iteasier to do one shoulder strapat a time and make sure that thebuckle is fastened.

    Pull the cover from the top of the seat sothat you can see the slots in the seat shell.Pull the shoulder strap and the chest padstrap forward and towards the centre of theshell, easing the metal tab and strapsthrough the slot. Then thread them throughto the front of the cover.

    Handy Tip- An alternativerecline position may makeaccess easier.

    Handy Tip- Use your otherhand to help angle the metaltab into the slot if necessary.

    Re-thread the straps through the chosen slots in the cover. Then (A) thread the end of the strapsthrough the matching slot in the seat shell until the metal tab is against the slot. Then (B) easethe metal tab through the slot by pushing it towards the back and centre of the seat shell. Makesure the straps are not twisted.

    Hook the shoulder strap back onto theyoke, making sure that the adjusterstrap is not twisted and that thethread colours on the shoulder strapmatch those on the adjuster strap.Repeat from step 2 with the other

    shoulder strap.

    Put the cover back. Pull both shoulder straps forward to remove any slack. Make sure the harnessis threaded through the buckle tongues as shown above.

    IMPORTANT - The shoulder straps and the chest pad straps MUST bethreaded through the same pair of slots.

    Fitting the First Class Si Rearward Facing

    EXTREME HAZARD Do not use on passenger seats equipped with air bags.

    ... and then pull the seat shell forward as far asit will go. Let go of the recline handle andmake sure the First Class Si is locked into therecline position.

    Before installing the First Class Si rearwardfacing it must be fully reclined. First lift therecline handle up...

    Locate the recline foot underneath the seat(see Crucial parts of your child car seat onpage 4). Pull out the recline foot and swing

    round until it clicks into the base bottom.

    3

    Place the First Class Si rearward facing on thecar seat. Push it firmly against the back of thecar seat ensuring that the recline foot and seat

    frame are resting on your cars seat and thatthe front of the seat shell is resting on theupright section of your cars seat.

    4

    Up to 9kg, and until the baby can sit unaided with confidence, you must ONLY

    install the First Class Si rearward facing using a lap-and-diagonal seat-belt.

    When your child is newborn, the Newborn Insert should be used at all times. Onceyour child reaches a maximum of 3 months the insert should be removed (seesection Removing the Newborn Insert on page 14). To see if the shoulder strapsare at the correct height for your child, see the section Checking the Height of theShoulder Straps on page 6.

    CHECK THAT:YOUR BABY WEIGHS LESS THAN 13KG AND THE SHOULDERSTRAPS ARE THE CORRECT HEIGHT FOR YOUR CHILD.

    Thread the lap section of the seat-belt aroundboth seat-belt guides underneath the front ofthe First Class Si shell. Make sure that the lapsection of the seat-belt is not twisted andremove all slack from this section of the belt

    before continuing.

    Fasten the seat-belt across the front of theFirst Class Si.

    DO NOT try to go around the back of the FirstClass Si first it will not work that way. Feedthe lap section down between the car seat andthe First Class Si.

    Pull the diagonal section of the seat-belt overthe top of First Class Si. If your seat-beltappears too short, see the blue box on page 13.

    IF YOUR SEAT-BELT APPEARS TOO SHORT1. Is the First Class Si pushed hard against the back of the car seat?2. On adjustable seats, make sure that the vehicle seat is adjusted as far back as it

    will go (such as for a tall passenger).

    3. In cars with a seat-belt height adjuster, make sure that it is in its lowest position.4. For further advice, contact our Customer Services Helpline.

    To remove the First Class Si from your car

    Simply unfasten the seat-belt and unthread it from the guides.

    To stow the recline foot

    To return the recline foot to its stored position, simply swing it back into theunderside of the First Class Si. You should hear a click as it disengages from itslocked-open position, and another as it locks into its stowed position. The reclinefoot is only securely stowed once you hear this click.

    Removing the newborn Insert

    Remove the buckle comfort pad by pulling itover the buckle.

    With one hand press in and hold the harnessrelease button. With your other hand below

    the chest pads, pull the shoulder strapsforward as far as possible to loosen theharness.

    Pull the buckle through the newborn insert.

    Un-fasten the studs in each side of thenewborn insert and pull the shoulder strapsclear of the slots in the newborn insert.

    The newborn insert can now be removed.

    Ensure that the strap adjuster goes through tothe underside of the seat shell, and ensure thatit rests horizontally so that it can't be pulledback through the shell. Pull on the buckle tomake sure that it is secure and that the strapadjuster does not come back through.

    The crotch strap length will now needshortening. To do this, rotate the exposedmetal strap adjuster and push it through theslot in the cover and the seat body. Pull on thebuckle to ensure that the adjuster does not slip

    though. The buckle strap is now the correctlength to be used without the insert.

    Re-installing the insert

    Follow the steps above in reverse order.

    IMPORTANT The crotch strapMUST now be adjusted.

    Fitting the Seat Forward Facing. Standard Routing A

    Pass the seat-belt between the seat base and seatshell, as shown.

    Place the First Class Si forward facing on the carseat then recline it fully by lifting the recline handle(under the front of the seat shell) and sliding theseat shell into the most reclined position.

    Fasten the seat-belt, making sure that the seat-beltis not twisted and that it lies in the area of the base

    indicated by the red routing label, as shown.

    Thread the diagonal section of the seat-beltthrough the red seat-belt lock. Make sure you pull

    the seat-belt in the direction of the arrow.

    CHECK THAT: YOUR CHILD WEIGHS MORE THAN 9KG.YOUR CHILD IS ABLE TO SIT UNAIDED.From 13kg you must ONLY install the First Class Si forwardfacing using a lap-and-diagonal seat-belt.

    IMPORTANT Have you adjusted the harness to the correct height for your child? You mustadjust the height of the harness BEFORE installing the First Class Si in your car. It cannot beadjusted whilst the seat is installed.

    IMPORTANT Ensure that the recline foot is in the stowed position before attempting to install theFirst Class Si forward facing. See the section To stow the recline foot on page 13

    IMPORTANT The newborn insert MUST NOT be used when the First Class Si is installed forward facing.

    Installing with a lap and diagonal seat-belt

    IMPORTANT The First Class Si has two red Seat-belt locks.ONLY USE the one FURTHEST away from the seat-belt buckle.

    ... and then pull here to tighten the diagonalsection of the seat-belt. It is essential to makesure that the belt is pulled through the redseat-belt lock at the correct angle, or else thebelt will bunch and come out.

    Firmly push your First Class Si into the vehicleseat using your body weight. Again, make surethat the seat-belt still lies in the area of thebase indicated by the red routing label andthen pull the top section here...

    The First Class Si should now be secure. Tocheck pull forward firmly on the harness. Thereshould be little or no movement..

    Thread the diagonal section of the seat-beltthrough the red seat-belt lock. Make sure youpull the seat-belt in the direction of the arrow.

    Undo the buckle of the car seat-belt.And re-fasten it so that it lies in the areabetween the tubular frame and the plasticmoulding as shown on the routing label 'B'.

    Reclining the seat

    and then pull the seat shell forward to thedesired angle. Let go of the recline handle and

    push the shell either forwards or backwards tomake sure the First Class Si locks into place.

    The First Class Si has five positions fromupright to fully reclined which can be chosenafter installation without disturbing your child.Lift the recline handle and slide the First ClassSi seat shell into the desired position.

    Looking after the First Class Si

    With the First Class Si fully reclined, open theseat-belt guard at the back of the shell. Pullthe yoke out from behind the seat and unhookboth shoulder straps.

    Press and hold down the harness releasebutton. With your other hand below the chestpads, pull the shoulder straps forward as far aspossible.

    Pull the cover from the top of the seat so thatyou can see the slots in the seat shell. Pull eachshoulder strap and chest pad strap forwardand towards the centre of the shell, easing themetal tab and straps through the slot.Then thread them through to the front of thecover.

    3

    Unfasten the buckle and remove the comfortpad. Slide the shoulder straps out of the chestpads. Gently pull the cover off the seat, easingthe shoulder straps, chest pads, harness buckleand adjuster strap through the slots in thecover.

    IMPORTANT The cover is asafety feature. NEVER use theFirst Class Si without it.

    Cleaning the Cover

    Please read the label on the cover for washing instructions. The cover is machine-washable.DO NOT tumble dry the cover short spin and drip dry only.

    IMPORTANT sponge clean only. Use hand soap and warm water.

    DO NOT take apart, or attempt to take apart, any of the harness when cleaning

    the harness and seat. It is unnecessary and dangerous to do so.

    DO NOT use solvents, detergents or washing-up liquid as these may weaken

    the harness and the seat.

    DO NOT lubricate or oil any part of the seat

    Refitting the Cover

    Refit the cover by reversing the above instructions, making sure that the chest padsand shoulder straps are threaded through the same pair of slots in both the coverand seat shell.

    IMPORTANT Always make surethat the metal tabs have beenthreaded back through the slots in

    the shell. Before attaching theshoulder straps to the yoke, makesure that the adjuster strap is nottwisted and that the thread colourson the shoulder straps match thoseon the adjuster strap.

    The First Class Si, its cover, comfort pad and chest pads have been carefullydesigned, manufactured and tested to high safety standards.

    IMPORTANT The cover is a safety feature. NEVER use the First Class Si withoutit. Dont put your child's safety at risk by using other makes of replacementcovers, comfort pad or chest pads. They could stop the First Class Si fromprotecting your child as well as it should. Replacement covers and a head supportare available from your Britax stockist.

    Removing and cleaning the buckle

    IMPORTANT Food and drink may find their way inside the buckle of the FirstClass Si harness. This can stop it from working as well as it should and so thebuckle may need cleaning from time to time.

    Follow the instructions below if you do not hear a click when fastening the buckle.

    Clean the harness buckle with warm water.Rinse thoroughly.

    First place the First Class Si in full recline. Thenloosen the harness (see 'Adjusting the harness'on page 5) and lay the First Class Si on itsback. With both hands under the seat shell useyour finger tips to rotate the tab and pushit up through the slot in the seat shell andcover.

    Latch and unlatch the tongues into the harnessbuckle several times until a strong click isheard. If you still cannot hear a strong click runit under warm water to rinse it again.

    To re-fit the harness buckle to your car seathold the tab sideways and insert it into the slotin the seat shell. Make sure the red harnessbuckle button faces away from the seat. lf thebuckle still does not return to its originalworking order, contact our Customer ServicesHelpline on 01264 386034.Ensure that youadjust the length of the crotch strap correctly.When using the Newborn Insert, one metaltab should be visable (longer strap). If the

    Newborn Insert is not being used, the metaltab should NOT be visable (shorter strap). See'Removing the Newborn Insert' on page 14.

    Important Information. Read before your first journey

    DO NOT Use your First Class Si in the home. It has not been designed for home useand should only be used in your car.DO NOT use anything, such as a cushion or coat, to raise the First Class Si off thepassenger seat. In an accident the First Class Si and your car seat-belts would not be

    able to protect your child as well as they should.DO NOT attempt to dismantle, modify or add to any part of the First Class Si orchange the way its harness or your car seat-belts are made or used. The officialapproval is no longer valid if modifications are made. NO modifications may bemade to the First Class Si other than by the manufacturer.DO NOT leave loose objects, such as books, in the back of your car. They must besecured because if you have to stop your car suddenly loose objects will keepmoving and can then cause serious injuries. Large and heavy loose objects are aparticular risk.

    DO NOT leave folding passenger seats unlatched. If you have to stop your carsuddenly a loose seat back could injure your child.DO NOT leave children alone in your car, even for a short time.DO NOT allow children to play with or adjust the First Class Si.DOstore the First Class Si in a safe place when it is not being used away from direct sunlightand sources of heat, eg radiators. Avoid placing heavy objects on top of it.DOmake sure that the First Class Si does not become trapped by a folding passenger seat orin the door of your car.DOput the lightest passenger behind the First Class Si if they do not wear seat-belts in the

    car. In the event of an accident they will cause less damage than a heavier person.Britax, whilst taking into account child car seat contact with vehicle seats throughout thedevelopment of new products, cannot accept responsibility for damage occurring to vehicle

    seats.

    After an accident

    After an accident, the First Class Si and your car seat-belts should be replaced. Althoughthey may look undamaged, if you were to have another accident the First Class Si andyour car seat-belts may not be able to protect your child as well as they should.

    Guarantee

    All Britax products are carefully designed, manufactured and tested. However, shouldthis product prove faulty within 12 months of purchase due to a materials ormanufacturing fault please return it to the original place of purchase. We will then atour discretion, either repair it free of charge or replace it with the same or a similar product.

    For guarantee purposes proof of purchase will be required. We recommend that youretain your receipt and attach it to this user guide. They should then be kept in a safe place.
