“What are the Odds?”

It amazes me to look at the extremely low probability of

a chance origin of life by the lining up of so many components,

chemicals, and variables that would be needed and then the

continued complexity involved to continue the changes into

what we see today in the world that evolutionists stand on as

how it came about. As creationists calculate and point out the

virtually nonexistent possibility of life beginning out of chance,

the evolutionists scoff and believe that any one arrangement of

the components into a simple, living molecule is just as likely

as another, of course given enough time. That seems like such

an immature argument coming from such learned scientists.

I’m no rocket scientist, yet creation itself declares to me that

there has to be, without a doubt, a great Creator to make all that

we see with its unique design.

The Bible gives us an illustration about intelligent

design and it isn’t Genesis chapter 1. The Bible uses twelve

brothers to illustrate to us how odds and probabilities point to a

Creator and that we should reject evolutionary theories. Maybe

you have never seen the account of Joseph and his brothers to

show this point, so let me walk you through it. Israel’s son,

Joseph, had come to be second in command in Egypt. His

eleven brothers knew not of his whereabouts and they came to

Egypt to buy food during a famine. These brothers did not

know they were invited to eat with their own brother Joseph.

When these eleven brothers were seated to eat they were seated

according to their birth order from the oldest to youngest,

presumably by a host that would have been unaware of that

order. . . . Continued on next page . . .

. . . Continued from previous page . . . When this happened we read in Gen. 43:33, “Now they were

seated before him, the first-born according to his birthright and

the youngest according to his youth, and the men looked at one

another in astonishment.” Why were these men astonished? They

marveled because the possibility that eleven men could be

randomly seated by birth order would be utterly impossible

without some foreknowledge. Just the possibility of getting the

order right at random is 40 million to 1. These brothers looked at

each other and marveled because they knew there was no way

their seating arrangement could have happened by chance. Now,

we can learn from God’s Word as it speaks to us. They knew

something amazing, and we can easily see that in the same way it

takes an all knowing, all powerful God to create the heavens, the

earth, the stars, the planets and life as we see it! These brothers

were not rocket scientists either, yet they understood what low

odds and probabilities mean and can not be taken as a serious

answer as to how things happen, but evolutionary scientists give

no marvel at all to their thought of the unique creation of life.

They somehow believe that a far more intricate organization of

life, compared to a seating arrangement, is no big deal and can just

as easily happen and produce our universe and the array of

complex systems in our life’s existence.

Should the striving for that kind of worldly wisdom be our

goal for being considered intelligent? Seems that any human, no

matter what their education level, has the understanding to see and

realize, just as Joseph’s brothers did by looking at each other in

astonishment, that when we behold the wonders of the complex

and intricate design of creation, we would hear the voice of the

Creator. “Lift up your eyes on high and see who has created these

stars, the One who leads forth their host by number, He calls them

by name; because of the greatness of His might and the strength of

His power not one of them is missing.”

In His service,

Doug

Servant Spotlight by Rebecca Glunt It is often said that in the church that food brings people

together. Bob and Sandy Thornburg know this first hand in their

lives. As both of their fathers were in the grocery business they

had ties with each other’s families in the grocery business. Bob

graduated from Lynn High School in 1952. After that he was

drafted into the Army serving in the Korean War for two years.

Following his service, he went to Ball State University and took

classes for one year for business administration. In 1956, he

married Sandy. They will be married for 56 years soon. Bob and

Sandy have four children who are Mike, Greg, Cindy, and David.

The couple has also been blessed with six granddaughters, four

grandsons, and three great grandsons.

Sandy graduated from Winchester High School in 1953.

Following her graduation she worked for her father at his A&P

Store (Atlantic and Pacific Tea Co.). She then went to Ball State

receiving a degree in secretarial related courses in 1956. She then

worked for her dad at his store for a time. After that time she

stayed home to care for her children. Bob, and his brothers Don

and Bill, all worked at a plastics factory in Richmond, Indiana till

1961. Then he went into business for his dad in the grocery store

business in Fountain City and Lynn. Bob retired in 1998, but

helped some as needed after that.

In the church, Bob has served as an elder, deacon, trustee, and a

Sunday school superintendent. He also taught the freshman

Sunday school class for about five to six years. Sandy helped Joan

Fudge during the church time to teach two year olds every other

month. She did this for about 10 years. She has also helped with

VBS when it was for two weeks in the evenings. Sandy has and

still does help with the communion preparation as well. In the

community, Bob and Sandy have also served.

Sandy was part of the Delta Theta Tau sorority, following high

school that did fund raising for the town. She served as the

treasurer for the sorority for about two years. Bob also served the

community by being on the Reid Hospital Foundation Board for

nine years as well.

As compliments of the grocery business, they were able to do a

lot of traveling to places such as: Germany, Switzerland, Hawaii,

the Caribbean islands, Spain, and Africa for one day. They also

have traveled to the Holy Land with another church group.

When asked what his favorite verse was, Bob said that his

mother had taught him this verse approximately 70 years ago and

it has stuck with him throughout the years. James 1:22 is excellent

for all believers to practice, which says, “But be ye doers of the

word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves.” (KJV)

Tags for Church Camp and VBS

There are still several leftover tags for much needed

items for Church Camp. We have placed these leftover tags

in marked envelopes on the literature table out in the foyer. If

you are able to help, please get tags from the envelopes and

bring donated items to the church as soon as possible.

Thanks!

Also, we have new tags on the cross on the wall out in

the foyer for items needed for our weekend VBS next month,

July 28th & 29th. Please note that there are dates listed on

each tag. There are several food items that are perishable and

we need those items brought in on a certain day. If you have

any questions, please see Cindy or Philip.
