In all other cases, consult a physician as soon as possible. Give no liquids to an unconscious person. Treat patient for shock by keeping victim warm and lying down with feet and legs elevated. Do not move a back injury patient unnecessarily and avoid moving any patient if possible. BREATHING PROBLEMS: Check airway for obstruction, listen and feel for breathing, look for signs of circulation. If breathing stops, give artificial respiration until help arrives. Do not stop. If patient is choking, relieve obstruction, try Heimlich Maneu- ver and try delivering sharp blows with heel of hand between shoulder blades. BLEEDING WOUNDS: Have victim lie down to slow heart rate, elevate injured part, apply direct pressure over wound with sterile bandage, pad or dressing. Cleanse wound, apply antiseptic ointment if available, cover with sterile bandage, pad or dressing. Do not remove embedded objects, apply padding around them. Consult with physician as soon as possible. For minor cuts and abrasions, clean with antiseptic towel, apply antiseptic ointment if available and cover with a sterile bandage. BURNS: Cover the injury with a clean dry pad or cloth to exclude air, call physician. If injury is mild and skin is not broken, immerse area in cold water or apply ice. Do not apply antiseptic or salve of any type. FRACTURES: Move patient as little as possible and seek immediate medical attention. Do not attempt to splint unless necessary. Control bleeding. POISONING: Dilute poisoning by giving victim water, unless victim is unconscious or convulsing. Call a doctor or Poison Control Center immediately for further instructions. Save container or label from swallowed material if available. INSECT BITES: To help prevent infection, apply bite relief medication or antiseptic and cover with adhesive bandage.
