Welcome to Firm Beliefs’ Ideas and Techniques Focus
September 2014
Bored in your role?
What do some of our clients recommend?

The team member
I realised I needed to change HOW I conducted myself. My initial boredom had put a barrier between me and my team and they had begun to leave me out of the ‘interesting’ conversations.
Once I showed interest in them and their work, they involved me in new projects.

The leader
I decided to undertake a 360 degree appraisal. Our firm didn’t have one at the time.
I learnt a lot about what I was good at (and less so!) and it re-invigorated me.

Knew it was time to leave anyway but…
I knew I needed to leave because in my role you need to move every 5 or so years. I had a year left though. So I went back to what I wanted to achieve when I arrived and did those things I still hadn’t achieved. I left on a high and went into my new job with energy and a list of recent achievements.

My skills and techniques were old
I had been using the same skills, techniques and attitudes to the business for years. Nothing was changing.
I decided to approach it with new skills, techniques and attitudes.
I updated myself, changes happened, and suddenly I was in action again.

Fear…
The role had outgrown me. I hunkered down, head in sand, didn’t want to think about what needed doing because I realised I wouldn’t be able to. My boss suggested a bit of coaching, which spurred me onto develop my skills to meet the demands of the job. Head out of sand. Action city!

Isolated
As a leader, you don’t get much of a chance to mull things over with colleagues. I started to participate in Firm Beliefs’ webinars which involve all their clients and heard how other leaders tackled things. It gave me a bit of a spur. Peer conversations with those not in my organisation are now a major part of my energy boost.

Know when to go
I wasn’t excited by the sector, the business or by my job any more.
I had moved to a different stage of life and had new interests and talents that I had developed outside my job.
I just decided to recognise that and take the right action. I left. I am doing something very different now. It was the right thing for me.
