to right now?

Run this health check

I have a regular time set aside to listen/read about issues external to the organisation

I read about more than just my own skills set or my own sector

I often put into practise something I have learnt when listening/reading.

What last year’s webinar groups listed:

Charities – you need to be reading about other charities, social enterprises and for profits. Your sector is the ‘social impact sector’ and they all operate in that.Legal services – you need to be reading about ABSs, MDPs, legal services providers AND other professional services providers – as well as outsourcing businesses; offshoring businesses; Google… and charities/social enterprises. They are all sources of legal advice to clients.

Information about my sector (as far as I can tell what my sector is any more!). Expand the sector you think you are in…

Information about other sectorsTry this:

Follow 3 or 4 new organisations/individuals from other sectors on Twitter for a month. What do you learn?Buy a journal from the newsstand about something completely different. What does it tell you about your own sector?Listen to a new podcast each month from a different sector. What can you learn from the sector’s experience?

What about your skills set?

Go back to the organisation that set the quality schemes for your skills set: Finance, HR, Marketing/Comms, Ops/Technology/Procurement etc.Look at organisations that train individuals in those areas.

What are they recommending/teaching for tomorrow? Are you up to speed and accomplished in those skills?

Then… embed what you know in your own organisation

How do you currently embed new knowledge?

How do you debate and discuss that knowledge?

How do you feed it into your strategic reviews?

Finally…

Who is in charge of ensuring you are constantly looking externally and learning from other individuals/organisations/sectors?

Everybody in the organisation should know the answer to this question.

Even if the answer is ‘just you’!
