21 years ago, Ryan Johnson began his career at PK U.S.A. It’s hard to believe looking at Ryan that he has done anything for 21 years

as he seems like a recent college graduate. His experiences at PK U.S.A. will tell you that his 21 years have brought a wealth of opportunity and learning.

Upon graduating from Warren Central High School, Ryan already had more experience in electrical training than most, “I attended Walker Career Center while I was in high school. I had an

affinity for tactile work, I like to fix things and figure out the processes and skills to make machines, wiring and products work”.

Ryan immediately began work at PK U.S.A. in the maintenance department as an entry-level technician. As the years passed, Ryan evolved as did PK U.S.A. “PK U.S.A. has grown, and so have I. There is always something new to learn, a mystery to solve and a process to implement. Staying on top of our machinery requirements and maintaining them is vital to the success of the operator and the success of the company”.

In 2009, Ryan stepped into a leadership roll, teaching and assisting new, incoming maintenance techs learn the ropes and operations at PK U.S.A. “There is always something new to learn, so not only do I get to mentor and teach, but I am still the student on many levels. PK U.S.A. affords the opportunity to lead, but to continue learning as well. As my position has grown, so have my responsibilities. I currently coordinate positions within the maintenance department as well as oversee vendors and all operations and processes to ensure our facility continues running safely and efficiently”. Not an easy task, as finding people to fit into the maintenance department continues to pose its challenges. “I would call our department a ‘niche department’ of sorts. We are highly concentrated in so many areas, with varied technologies, a tech must possess an open mind along with a diverse skill set to keep up with the demands of the job. The best part, every day is different. We learn new processes and how to rectify situations we often times never imagined would need to be modified or repaired. So much of our job deals with proprietary machinery and systems, that we know we must stay on top of technology and keep our nose in the game”.

Ryan has, for the most part, always worked 2nd shift. “Second shift fits my personality and my lifestyle well, as I have ample time to tinker with cars and motorcycles. I also run for fitness, all of these things keep my mind and body in focus to do my best at my vocation”. Ryan was in a band at a young age, and he still enjoys a wide array of music from jazz to electronic music. “I am a Spotify junkie of sorts”. It’s not hard to know when Ryan is in an area working, as his love for bikes can be easily recognized by his handcart, which he fashioned with a great set of handlebars.

Ryan also has a son, who is a junior at Purdue University. His major, Electrical and Computer Engineering of course.

“Of all the jobs at PK U.S.A., I am positive I have the best one,” remarks Ryan. “I wouldn’t trade it for the world”.

Lloyd Rose walked into the PK U.S.A. Tennessee facility last September returning as the Plant Manager. What he found was a team that was looking for a bright spot; a brand of new leadership they could look up to and respect. Lloyd was up for the work laid before him to bring back the luster of the Tennessee facility.

Today, the associates are thrilled Lloyd and their pride has returned.

Lloyd began his career at PK U.S.A. in 1990, as a temp on the floor. “I worked my way through every position on the manufacturing side and loved every minute of it. The opportunity to learn all of the processes served me well, and still does today”. Lloyd had moved to Indiana in 1990, coming from California with his wife and three children. In 2000, Lloyd moved over to Blue River Stamping for 3 years, then headed to PK U.S.A. in 2003 to oversee the construction of the Tennessee plant. “ I was at the Tennessee facility for 5 years, and headed back to Shelbyville in 2009 to become General Manager. The economy took a nose-dive at that point, and around 300 people lost their jobs at PK. These were long-term, good people. I was the last to go. Those were tumultuous days and PK U.S.A. did everything they could to keep us as long as they could”. The Tennessee plant closed completely, halting all production in that

facility. Lloyd had a family to care for, so he had to seek employment elsewhere.

The Tennessee facility reopened in 2014, a few of those let go in 2009 returned to work for PK. The facility hummed along, but still had not found a manager with quite the right fit. Lloyd found out the Tennessee facility was looking for a new plant manager, and he gave PK U.S.A. a call. “If they would have me, I was more than happy to return to PK”. Needless to say, PK snatched Lloyd up, and gave him the job. “When I came in to the facility in September of 2018, the first thing I noticed was a loss of trust in management. There were issues with communication and no camaraderie among the associates”. Lloyd knew just what to do. “Who knows better how to solve a problem and resolve issues on the floor, those that work there every day. We began involving the associates in decision-making and idea creating. They were used to being talked at, not talked to. I could see this group knew their stuff, so it was time to tap in to their knowledge and expertise. New training began with the management team with the theme how to train and not to blame”. The associates on the floor have responded to Lloyd’s initiatives, and are so glad to see him return. “This is a great place to work with a lot of good people. I walk in everyday knowing I’m going to make something better every day”. Part of Lloyd’s success can be attributed to getting back to the basics and following appropriate procedures. “I’m firm, but I am consistent. If something isn’t working, let’s fix it!”

“I have the best job at PK U.S.A.”

PK USA’s wellness program, Wise Health Decisions®, is a free benefit for associates of PK USA at Shelbyville, IN, Gallatin, TN, and Senatobia, MS. Not only is it a free benefit, but PK also provides two incentives to reward your participation and engagement. However, it is important that you know that your participation is voluntary. You may choose not to participate in the program and incentives.

What is the Participation Incentive?PK rewards all associates who participate in the Wise Health Decisions® Wellness Program and follows PK’s participation rules, a Wellness Health Premium for health insurance: $50 lower health insurance premium per week than the Standard Health premium for all plans.

To qualify for the Participation Incentive and receive lower premiums: Participation means that associates attend all their clinic appointments at coach unless associates follow the rules or missing an appointment.

Frequency of appointments is determined by comparing your personal biometric test values with values from national medical recommendations for risks of chronic diseases. National values are associated with risks of over 20 chronic diseases. Examples of nationally recognized medical standards include National Institute of Health, American Heart Association, and American Diabetes Association.

PK expects associates to attend appointments if they are at work, on FMLA, or temporary layoff. If an associate is off work on the day of the appointment, the associate is to contact the Wise Health Decisions® office before the appointment, if possible, but no later than 15 calendar days after the appointment. 812-378-0615. When an associate calls, the call is recorded with name, reason for calling, and time and date. (Refer to your Benefits Manual for a full description of participation rules.)Wise Health Decisions® staff informs PK each quarter of those associates who are in compliance with the attendance rules. If an associate becomes out of compliance with attendance, the associate pays the Standard Health Premium for the next quarter until the associate returns to compliance with your appointments.

Congratulations to PK Shelbyville and Tennessee! For the last quarter (October – December, 2018):For PK Shelbyville, 453 associates out of the 485 eligible were awarded the Wellness What is the Engagement Incentive?

PK also established a cash reward called “Engagement Incentive” that pays each participant form low-risk test results or test results that reduce risk levels. Participating employees could be eligible for an extra $200 every 6 months ($50 per biometric test).

Eligibility for the Engagement Incentive: Each time an associate has an appointment, the RN coach conducts four biometric tests, reviews the test values, and determines the employee risk level for each test. The RN coach marks the risk level for each test on the back of the results paper that associates receives. The coach and associate discuss personalized behavior changes that the associate could try before the next appointment to lower a risk level.
