INTRODUCTION Congratulations on your purchase of another great digital product from Phonic. The Firefly series of audio interfaces and digital converters has become something of a staple series from Phonic. This one rack-unit microphone preamplifier with AD/DA conversion allows you to get signals to and from, for example, a multi-track recorder with the greatest of ease. Phonic’s famously low-noise preamplifiers provide clear audio reproduction that show the subtle nuances of your audio, while high quality AD/DA converters ensure your audio is handled with care when converted to digital – so that no distortion or signal degradation ensues.

We know how eager you are to get started – wanting to get the Firefly out and hook it up is probably your number one priority right now – but before you do, we strongly urge you to take a look through this manual. Inside, you will find important facts and figures on the set up, use and applications of your brand new mixer. If you do happen to be one of the many people who flatly refuse to read user manuals, then we just urge you to at least glance at the Instant Setup section. After glancing at or reading through the manual (we applaud you if you do read the entire manual), please store it in a place that is easy for you to find, because chances are there’s something you missed the first time around.

FEATURES Studio quality 8-channel AD and DA converter Phantom power on all microphone inputs 44.1 kHz and 48 kHz sample rates External sample rate synchronization via word clock

or ADAT input Optical ADAT in/out interface All mic/line inputs are routed to the ADAT output ADAT input can be routed to all Line outputs Simultaneous DAC and ADC operation possible Balanced XLR line-level output connectors Signal & clip indicators on all input channels High-quality components and reliable power supply

BASIC SETUPThis section will provide a few hints on the setup of the Firefly ADA8 as well as further safety instructions to ensure its continuous use. 1. Install the Firefly ADA8 into a rack if required. The

Firefly ADA8 takes up one unit of rack space. When installing the unit, ensure it’s well ventilated to reduce the risk of overheating. Never place the Firefly ADA8 immediately on top of amplifiers to avoid transferring heat.

2. Connect all required inputs and outputs before turning the unit on. This could include analog input sources such as ‘direct outputs’ from analog mixers, or simply a combination of microphone and line inputs. Digital input and output possibilities include multi-track recorders and other ADAT-equipped digital equipment.

3. When working with digital gear, ensure the sampling rate or sync options are selected correctly. When working with the Firefly ADA8 as the master sync device, choose the sampling rate between 44.1 and 48 kHz. When used as a slave, select whether the unit should receive sync information from the Word Clock input or ADAT.

4. Connect the AC power cable and turn on the Firefly ADA8. When connecting to an AC power source, ensure the power required by your unit is identical to local voltage levels. Do not defeat the Grounding Pin on the included AC power cable to ensure the Firefly is grounded at all times.

1. Read these instructions before operating thisapparatus.

Front Panel1. Microphone InputsThese balanced XLR connectors are for the addition of microphones to the Firefly ADA8. These analog inputs are not routed directly to analog outputs, but are rather routed to the digital ADAT output.

2. Line InputsThese balanced ¼” TRS phone jack connectors are for the connection of line-level devices and microphones to the Firefly ADA8. Like the microphone inputs, these connectors are not routed directly to analog outputs – instead they’re routed to the digital output.

3. Gain ControlThe gain control adjusts the input gain of both the Mic in and Line in of the corresponding input channel. The gain can be adjusted between +10 and +60 dB.

4. Signal IndicatorThis LED indicator will light up when an input signal is present on the corresponding channel.

5. Clip IndicatorThe clip LED indicator will light up when the input signal of the corresponding channel is too high. For best use of audio, the clip control can light up for occasional peaks. If the peak indicator lights up too often, reduce the gain control to help protect the unit and your audio.

6. Sync Master LEDWhen the Firefly ADA8 acts as the master clock source, sending out a clock signal to external devices, this LED will light up. The rear-panel sync switch allows you to determine the sampling rate.

7. Sync Locked LEDThis LED will light up when the Firefly ADA8 is externally synced via either ADAT or Word Clock.

8. Phantom Power Button and LEDPushing this button will activate +48V DC of phantom power for microphone inputs 1 through 8. This is perfect for use with condenser microphones and other input devices that require phantom power (passive direct boxes, for example). Please note that Dynamic microphones do not require phantom power. When phantom power is active, the LED that accompanies this button will illuminate.NB. Be sure to mute your amplifier when activating and/or deactivating phantom power to avoid loud pops from occurring. Phantom power is not compatible with all microphones. Please consult your microphone’s manufacturer for information on whether your microphone is compatible with phantom power.

9. On Button and IndicatorPush this button to turn the Firefly ADA8 on. When the unit is turned on, the corresponding LED indicator will light up to indicate power is being supplied to the unit.
