... the choice of industry experts for over 35 years...

When specified correctly fire protection materials preserve property and can save lives. With so many products available and so much at stake, gaining expert advice on choosing the right products is vital.

The range of fire protection products supplied by SIG Technical Insulation covers fire protection materials suitable for the entire construction process. This guide features information on fire protection products from major manufacturers and includes products for structural steel, partitioning, ductwork, wall and roof linings, ceilings and intumescent fire stopping.

We also stock a wide range of ancillary items such as fixings and steel angles.

Fire Protection is a specialist market and you need suppliers who have the experience and technical expertise to give you tailored advice on products and applications. We can advise you on which metal systems to use or which fixings and fastenings you need for your boards and panels for example.

As our experts are on hand to support you, we can help you select the exact products for your application, first time, every time.

This product range and expertise is backed up by our fleet of specialist delivery vehicles, so we ensure your products are delivered exactly when and where you want them. Efficient scheduling means the risks of damage and loss are greatly reduced and our fleet of Moffett Mounty off-loading vehicles provide the ideal solution for sites with limited availability for off-loading facilities or difficult access.

Part B LegislationFire safety legislation can be confusing but it’s essential that it’s adhered to as not following this legislation can cost lives.

The Building Regulations Part B is split into two different volumes which focus on fire safety: Volume 1 covers dwelling houses and Volume 2 covers all other buildings.

Part B assesses the reaction to fire and fire resistance. Elements such as heat emission, ignitability, toxic gas and smoke emission are caused by the reaction to fire. Fire resistance and firestopping deal with the ability of a material to withstand fire exposure. SIG Technical Insulation specialise in supplying fire resistance and firestopping products which comply with Part B after the following assessments:

• Stability – load-bearing capability and structural collapse• Integrity – flame puncture• Fire insulation – heat transfer

Fire resistance covers a number of categories including protection of building structure; service protection; penetration seals and large barriers; and linear fire-stops and cavity barriers.

Fire resistance and firestopping which adheres to Part B will ultimately save lives as it achieves:

• Safe evacuation of the building• Time for the emergency services to fight fires safely and

efficiently• Reduced losses to property, rebuilding costs and business

down-time• Fire containment in cells or compartments to slow the

spread of fire

All the products which SIG Technical Insulation supplies comply with Part B legislation and our team are experts in this.

Third Party CertificationThird Party Certification is a voluntary certification scheme which includes verification of the test evidence and type of application or use of the product.

The Certification also includes a regular audit of the factory QA system to check the products supplied to the contractor are the same design or formulation as the original test samples.

There are multiple benefits to having Third Party Certification including:

• Shows customers your company is regularly assessed by an impartial third party

• Demonstrates you are meeting minimum quality and environmental requirements

• Makes it easier for you to gain impartial feedback and monitor your business

• Helps you to comply with legal obligations

Depending on the level of claims being made, CE Marking is enabled via a Third Party Certification body acting as a Notified Body to agreed European procedures. It should be noted that CE Marking is not a ‘quality mark’ but uses harmonised European classification and fire testing procedures. Voluntary third party product certification schemes are ‘product quality’ schemes and invariably include more checking procedures than required for CE Marking.

A Third Party Association for installers is a process whereby the contracting company employs appropriately trained staff to design and install the required passive fire protection system. Their work is independently audited by site inspections from the third party organisation and a full record system is required as part of the scheme. The use of such accredited schemes is recognised in the Building Regulations, Approved Document B (Use of Guidance; Independent certification schemes).

In the section detailing ‘Use of Guidance; Materials and Workmanship – Independent certification schemes:

The text suggests that savings are available to reduce the costs of Building Control/Approved Inspectors where third party certificated products and installers are being used on site. This publication is intended to enhance that process.

It should be noted that all ASFP Contractor members are required to be subject to Third Party Certification as a condition of membership of ASFP.

Firestopping IntroductionThe aim of fire stopping is to control the spread of fire with fire resisting compartments which subdivide a building, allowing the fire to be contained.

However, fire can spread through concealed cavities between firestopping floors and doors, such as through the holes made in floors and walls, either for services or by design.

Firestopping ensures the materials used to connect floors and doors are fire resistant and maintain the fire rating of the material they are passing through.

Different types of doors and floors require specific firestopping systems and each system needs to be understood so it’s suitable for its application.

Our experts will take the confusion out of fire stopping and give you the peace of mind that every aspect of your structure is protected from fire.

Fire Stopping Products

Ablative coated batts are slabs of high density rock wool with a white endothermic, ablative coating.ApplicationDesigned to stop the spread of fire through openings in fire resistant walls and floors which are used for the passage of buildings and communications services.

Intumescent Fire and Acoustic Sealant is supplied in either 310/600ml foils or 5 litre tubs and has excellent adhesion to most types of surfaces. The sealant cures in air to form a non-hardening, tack-free seal, preventing the passage of smoke, toxic gases and fire.ApplicationIntumescent Fire and Acoustic Sealant is suitable for sealing small gaps and holes in applications requiring up to 240 minutes fire resistance.

Loadbearing Fire Compound is a specially formulated gypsum based compound, which is mixed with water to be trowelled or poured around service penetrations. When set, Loadbearing Fire Compound becomes a hard material with a white matt finish. The actual surface finish of the set product is dependent upon treatment at the time of application.ApplicationLoadbearing Fire Compound is used to provide a fire seal around service penetrations in walls and floors. The formless nature of the fire compound prior to setting allows it to be introduced between services and so create a complete void free seal, including around bunches of cables.

· Up to 240 minutes fire resistance in concrete floors. Refer to CERTIFIRE CERTIFICATE OF APPROVAL No CF 425.

· Promat Technical Services must always be consulted for specific advice where penetrations are involved.

3· The seal must be installed in floors or walls which are minimum 100mm thick, or the the thickness of the seal, whichever is greater. The minimum density for the concrete of the floor or wall is 780kg/m 3and for walls made of concrete blocks is 600kg/m .

· Penetrating services must be rigidly supported no further than 500mm from the seal faces on both sides of the seal.

3· Rock wool slab (minimum 50mm thick x 140kg/m ) may be used as permanent shuttering for pouring the compound into the opening and around penetrations.

· Plastic pipe penetrations should be firestopped with Promaseal Pipewrap, available in a range of sizes up to 160mm plastic pipe diameter.

· Promaseal Pipewraps are folded around the pipe and secured into position using the adhesive tab.

· The Promaseal Pipewrap is then slid along the pipe and positioned to tight-fit into the prepared opening.

· The Promaseal Pipewrap must then be grouted into position using Compound.

Insulated Fire Sleeves

For more information, please visit www.sigtechnicalinsulation.co.uk

For insulated pipes, it is necessary to remove the insulation at point of penetration to enable standard pipe collars to close plastic pipes. This removal of insulation results in condensation on cold pipes and loss of thermal performance on hot pipes.

Insulated Fire Sleeves combats this problem by providing both fire stopping and thermal insulation.

General benefits:• Quick, simple and accurate installation• Maintains pipe insulation at penetration points• Supplied with integral vapour barrier• No mastic or ancillaries required• Excellent thermal and acoustic insulation• Non-combustible

DimensionsInsulated Fire Sleeves are supplied 300mm long. They are manufactured to fit a range of standard pipe sizes, from 17mm to 169mm O.D. and standard thicknesses of 25mm to 100mm.For un-insulated pipes, a thickness of 25mm is required to maintain the fire rating. Insulated Fire Sleeves should be installed to the same thickness as the pipe insulation (min 25mm thick).

Service TemperaturesInsulated Fire Sleeves are used to fire stop pipe work operating at temperatures between 0°C and 180°C. At low temperatures, care should be taken to maintain the vapour barrier.

Tunnel Liner and Ductliner

PassiveTecTM Tunnel Liner Our 30mm Tunnel Liner board has passed the most demanding tunnel test currently available. Tested at the Efectis laboratory in the Netherlands, it has achieved 3 hours against the RWS temperature curve, 3 hours against the HCM temperature curve and 4 hours against the ISO 834 temperature curves. These test standards cover all of the highest specifications likely to be required in tunnel lining fire protection.

The PassiveTecTM board has a uniquely high insulation performance hence it achieves more than the required standard of protection. In addition it is extremely stable when exposed to moisture or water. This is critical in the tunnel lining area where leakage and flash floods can occur regularly. Our team of fire engineers are ready to conduct specific tests as required by tunnel construction projects.

Structural Steel

Building regulations stipulate the period of fire resistance required for any element of building structure. Beams and columns require at least the same standard of fire protection as that required by any element they support.

The temperature rise of structural steelwork under fire test conditions provides a method of computing fire protection thicknesses based on accepted empirical formulae. The rate of increase in temperature of a steel cross section is determined by the ratio of the heated surface area (A) to the volume (V).

This ratio (A/V) has units of m-1 and is known as the section factor.

The section factor is a measure of the rate at which a steel element will increase in temperature. The higher the value of the section factor, the faster the element will heat up and therefore the thicker fire protection required to satisfy a stipulated fire protection period.

How to Specify Promat VERMICULUX® (up to 240 minutes – A/V 17 – 260m-1)Promat VERMICULUX® is a lightweight non-combustible board specially designed to provide fire protection to structural steelwork. Up to 240 minutes fire resistance can be achieved depending on thickness of material used and the dimensions of the beam or column being protected. Promat VERMICULUX® can be installed prior to the building being weather tight.

Promat PROMATECT®-250 (up to 120 minutes – A/V 17 – 260 m-1)Promat PROMATECT®-250 is a non-combustible mineral bound light weight board. It has smooth matt upper surface and is off-white in appearance.

Promat PROMATECT®-250 provides a high degree of strength, dimension stability, and fire protection to structural steelwork. Up to 120 minutes fire resistance can be achieved depending on thickness of material used and the dimensions of the beam or column being protected.

Cavity Barriers in Rainscreen Facades

AIM Ventilated Rainscreen Barrier Plus (VRB Plus)Product DescriptionThe AIM VRB Plus offers an effective fire barrier for ventilated cavities over 60mm up to 300mm in its standard form. The AIM VRB offers a superior fire rating and allows a continuous ventilation space of up to 44mm. This provides excellent ventilation behind the cladding whilst leaving sufficient room for easy installation of the cladding panels.

ApplicationPolythene enclosed to give weather resistance in a semi exposed application

SpecificationThickness – 75mmWidth – Total cavity size less 44mmLength – 1000mmMax Air Gap – 44mm• Polythene enclosed to give weather resistance in a semi exposed application• Tested and assessed by Chiltern International Fire

AIM Ventilated Rainscreen Fire Barrier (Lite) VRB LiteProduct DescriptionThe AIM VRB Lite, offers an effective fire barrier for ventilated cavities of up to 300mm. VRB Lite is simple and cost effective to install, allowing a continuous ventilation space of up to 25mm. VRB Lite has been tested to the general principles of the more stringent BS EN 1363-1 standard.

ApplicationPolythene enclosed to give weather resistance in a semi exposed application

SpecificationThickness – 75mmWidth – Total cavity size less 25mmLength – 1000mmMax Air Gap – 25mm• Polythene enclosed to give weather resistance in a semi exposed application• Tested and assessed by Chiltern International Fire

Horizontal Cavity Barrier Lamatherm CW–RSH incorporates a continuous bonded intumescent strip to the leading edge and encapsulated in a weather resistant polymer film. In the event of exposure to fire, this expands and fully seals the designed ventilation gap formed at the time of installation between barrier and the rear of the cladding.

Vertical Cavity Barrier For vertical barriers within rainscreen systems, it is generally acceptable to fully fill the void. Our Lamatherm CW–RSV product is specifically intended for use in this manner. As a full fill barrier system, the integral intumescent strip is not required. The front edge is finished as standard in a plain aluminium foil.

Alternatively, the product is optionally available with a factory applied DPC pre-bonded to this surface.

Masonry WallMasonry walls within the external fabric of a building are typically formed by an inner and outer masonry leaf which forms a void for installation of a thermal insulation layer. Such situations will typically form a hidden cavity within the fabric of a building and potentially form a ready route for spread of flame and smoke within this hidden void. In these instances it is necessary to install cavity barriers to limit the spread of flame within this hidden void. It is imperative the selection of products are suited to the intended application and proven to perform having undergone independent testing in line with current standards.

AIM Wall Cavity Fire Barrier & Fire Barrier SlabsProduct DescriptionAIM Wall Cavity Barrier is made from foil faced high density Rockwool stone wool. The barrier prevents the passage of flame and smoke within the cavity it fills for the period of fire rating, specified below.

ApplicationSuitable for use in all cavity walls, as well as for fire stopping between a curtain wall system and a concrete floor slab.

SpecificationLengths: 1000mm (Available cut to size or in slabs)Foil Facing (with AIM logo)Cavity widths: 50 - 600mm (barrier to be compressed by about 5%)

• No mastics or sealants required• Tested to BS 476 part 20 and assessed by Warrington Fire Research Centre• Non-combustible to EN15301-1 and classified A1• Faced with Class O reinforced aluminium foil for enhanced smoke resistance• Ozone depletion potential of zero; no CFCs or HCFCs used in manufacture
