Why Quality Pumps & Irrigation co. recommends BEST ENGINE HONDA, the BEST PUMP DAVEY: The last 1,000 Honda Engines we have sold we have not had to put a spanner on them under the 3 year warranty and beyond, now Rolls Royce could not claim that. Davey Engine driven Fire Fighting Pumps & Engine Driven Transfer Pumps are the leaders in their field in both in quality and performance. Unlike most of the cheaper brand or no-brand pumps you can trust Davey’s performance curves & their claims. We have many customers come to us for help & advice who have purchased a cheap pump (especially online) and the pump will not do the task as the sellers & manufacturer’s had claimed. The old sayings: you get what you pay for & “The bitterness of poor quality remains long after the sweetness of low price is forgotten” - Benjamin Franklin Do yourself a favour buy Quality! Why buy from us – Quality Pumps & Irrigation co. is a shop. You can contact us by walking in or phone or email – we are not just an online store who are hard to get hold of for after sales service. We have been operating in the same place for 36 years WOW. Hence we have a big following from tens of 1000s of satisfied customers Australia-wide and we know the products we sell.

* TIPs - Important advice * : * We at Quality Pumps & Irrigation co. recommend removing the clacker (Built in non-return valve) from the pump and instead using a foot valve assembly on the end of the suction pipe where it sits in the water Why: So your pump will prime the first time every time. Most if not all engine driven pumps are built with a CLACKER” in the suction port, this acts as a non-return valve. The problem with this design to prime the pump you have to prime it a number of times, how many depends on the length and size of your suction line: with a 5 metre suction line you would probably have to prime it 4 or 5 times. Now if you do not use the pump very often or if on occasions some else primes & starts the pump they won’t know or you may not remember and the pump could be run without being fully primed. The problem with those situations is:

1. If it run for a while it will cause damage to the pump. 2. If you have a fire in the area or you need water urgently if you don’t get it primed straight up you

will abandon the pump for a bucket or some other inferior method of getting water. * How to set up a suction line so as to avoid sucking up unwanted rubbish – dirt – gravel etc in to the pump which can damage the pump, cause excessive wear and block up sprinkler nozzles or valves etc.:

1. Use a Suction Strainer on the end of the suction line that is in the water. Quality Pumps & Irrigation co. carries a number of types & sizes of foot strainers to suit your pump needs. Better still use a foot valve with a strainer (see tip above).

2. Whether it is sucking out of a Creek, Dam or other you must make sure the end of the suction line (Strainer or Foot Valve) stays off the bottom & out of the mud/gravel/slush etc. You can do this by:

a. Use a Float tied to end of suction line (Strainer or Foot Valve) with 450mm extra rope between float & end of suction line.

b. Also tie a heavy weight such as a concrete building block 400 x 200 x 200 to the end of suction line with (depending depth of water) 1 to 1.5 metres of extra rope between block & end of suction line. This will stop the suction line popping up out of the water & from drifting (with the wind or flow of creek) in to the bank where the water is shallow.

c. Alternatively drive a stake in to the Creek, Dam or other, where the water is at least 1 metre deep and tie the end of the suction line to it about 600 form the surface & 400mm up of the bottom.

3. It is imperative to make sure the suction line runs in a downward slope from the pump to the water. If it is lying with ups & down waves in the line, then air will get trapped in the high spots and you will find it difficult to get pump primed. If this situation can not be avoided then you need to shake the line up and down right along the line to move the air towards the pump. If the suction line is very long say over 20mts with waves then you will find the best way to dispel the air from the

suction line is to use another pump down at the water source and connect its discharge to the suction hose pushing water through it which will eventually take all the air with the flowing water.

* What size suction & delivery pipe should I use on my pump? It depends on the flow rate required and the design of the pump: Suction Pipe/ Hose: Generally most Fire Fighting style pumps have a 11/2 BSP (38mm) suction port – it is advisable for the best performance and life of the pump not to use smaller than the same size pipe (11/2 BSP (38mm)), and if you are not pumping up a high hill etc and you want the best performance from your pump or you want to save fuel (big $ savings) then use a 2” (50mm) suction line. Discharge Pipe: basically the same advise applies to the discharge as the suction advise above except depending what you are using the water for, ie: if you are filling a tank or similar and you have a single line running on a open ended flow, compared to if you are running multi-lines off the discharge, or you are teeing off the main line with sub mains or laterals.

If you would like free advise please contacts us at Quality Pumps & irrigation co. by email, phone or fax. If you have a plan or a mud map of what you want to achieve or the layout of you property feel free to email it to us with you requirement. We can help you to get it right the first time.

* Use thread tape on all threaded fittings – otherwise the fittings can suck air in on the suction side of your pump & or leak and leak on the discharge side of the pump – this can result in failure to prime or pump failure. * Prime your pump: How: open the priming port on top of the pump and pour water in to the pump until it is full – wait 30seconds to make sure the water level in the pump does not drop before re attaching the priming plug. If you have removed the clacker (as described in the tip above) and connected a foot valve, then the water should run down to the foot valve and the pump will prime the first time. When do I need to Prime my pump?: Always when you connect a new pump or reconnect an old pump or if a pump has been not used for some time, remove the priming plug and check the water level in the pump. If a pump does not pump water it probably has lost its prime & needs repriming, however there is a reason it lost prime, you probably have a leak in the pipe work or the foot valve has rubbish under the seat or you have a loose fitting. We can help you to get it right the first time.
