On behalf of the men and women of the McNab/Braeside Fire Department, I am pleased to present the yearend report for 2016.

This annual report details some of our statistics and various initiatives. Included are charts showing the trends with respect to call volume, loss due to fires, permits, inspections and the home smoke alarm program.

FIRE CHIEF’S REPORT

2016 was a very busy, yet interesting year for the members of the McNab/Braeside Fire Department. We were challenged with several serious incidents, responding to 68 emergency call outs, conducted annual fire prevention and public education, performed preventative maintenance on equipment, conducted training sessions along with annual inspections.

Among the serious incidents; we responded to several motor vehicle collisions (MVCs) of which two were fatal, a couple mutual aid assist calls to neighbouring townships, structure fires, public assistance calls and water access calls. We also signed a first response agreement with Lanark Highlands to provide fire protection to their section of White Lake (Station 5).

Due to the unusually early dry conditions, emergency fire bans were instituted frequently throughout the summer fire season. There were 743 permits issued for 2016; this number includes the two trailer parks in White Lake. Grass and forest fires were of major concern, and the department responded to a few minor grass fires. Incidents of grass fires and neighbour dispute calls have dramatically been reduced due to the success of the updated burning bylaw 2015-23.

The position of Training Officer was filled by Captain Stuart Wolfe. Captain Wolfe is the lead coordinator for training and is receiving help from our existing Trainer Facilitators to implement MBFD firefighters to NFPA firefighter 1 and 2 standard. Lanark Highlands Station 5 (White Lake) will be doing joint training with McNab/Braeside in 2017.

FIRE PREVENTION AND EDUCATION REPORTCarrying out our mandate for Prevention is made possible with the support I receive from the members of the McNab/Braeside Fire Department. Prevention is our first line of defense and the Fire Prevention Team continues to make improvements to our annual programs and information we offer the residents of McNab/Braeside Township.

2016 saw the Prevention Team improve our ability and legal obligation to offer information in print to the residents of our Township. Fire Prevention has successfully collaborated with the Firefighters Association to add a Fire Prevention element to all public events throughout the year.

The Fire Prevention branch used radio ads with MyFM at key times throughout the year in 2016. The radio ads covered road, water and fire prevention safety. As well, ads where placed in the township times section of our local newspapers and were also posted on the Township and the Firefighters Association Facebook pages promoting fire safety. Our hope is that we will be able to reach all the Residents with Prevention Education using these methods on a regular basis.

Residential Smoke Alarm and Extinguisher Day Programs were a big success this year with a total of 160 residents visited through the smoke alarm program and 75 trailers checked through the extinguisher day program at our two seasonal trailer parks.

New and replacement equipment

The Fire Department purchased many pieces of equipment to enhance our operations in 2016. This equipment included new extrication tools, high pressure hose, a thermal imaging camera and a heavy rescue truck all of which have proven their value. In addition, the regular replacement of protective clothing continued, ensuring that our firefighters are properly and safely equipped to perform their duties.

FORMER RESCUE 9813Model : Ford/Saulsbury

1979 Ford L-900/Saulsbury full cab with custom enclosed walk-in rescue body. 63-8 had an 8 bottle 6000psi air cascade system, a 12kw Onan generator and a rear mounted 6000lb Ramsey winch. It was sold in 1999 when Green Ridge took delivery of their E-One Rescue. It was sold to Custom-Tec Fire Apparatus in Canada who re-sold it to McNab/Braeside Fire Dept. of Ontario. It was decommissioned in 2010.
