DISCUSSION Scene management

Accidents or injuries at emergencies

Approximately half of all firefighter injuries occur at the scene of fire emergencies, or "on the fireground." Firefighters experience a much higher risk of injury on the fireground than other emergency incidents or during non-emergency duty. The highest number of injuries from all causes occurs during fire attack and search and rescue. Fire attack is not only one of the most dangerous

fireground activities, but also one of the most common. In activities other than fire attack, firefighters are injured most frequently from falls during salvage and overhaul, incident scene support activities, or apparatus use; from physical stress and overexertion or being struck by an object; through forcible entry; and during incident scene support activities.

A Read the article. Then answer these . questions.

1. Where and how most firefighter’s injuries occur? ___________________________________________.

2. What type of incidents can cause injuries to the body? ______________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________________.

B Pair work Take turns asking the question in part A.

Group work What precautions have you noticed emergency responders taking at vehicle accidents?

READING Emergency Operations

Page 19: FIRE Book

READING Fire Behavior

Fires behave differently. Some burn slowly and evenly; others are extremely hot, burning fiercely and quickly. Different fires have different colored flames. Some fires start easily; others don’t. Some fires produce deadly gases that could kill you if not ventilated.

The behavior of the fire often depends on the fuel. Other factors or variables may include where the fuel is situated and how near it is to other fuels, the weather (especially wind and relative humidity), oxygen concentration, in the case of outside fires, the shape of the terrain

Listening how these three components are presented in the fire triangle. Describe the fallowing terms:

Creeping Smoldering Running

Torching Crowning Spotting

A Read the article.

B There is a logical sequence in the pictures below; place a number from 1-6 in the blank circles in order to solve the puzzle. Compare with a partner.

SNAPSHOT Fiscal and Chemical Changes

The interaction of the three equal sides of the fire triangle are: heat, fuel, and oxygen. A fire requires them for its creation. A fire it extinguishes when one side of the triangle is not present, in other words, when the generation of heat is not enough to sustain the process, when the fuel is removed or exhausted, and there is a lack of oxygen.

Page 20: FIRE Book

READING Classification of Fire

LISTENING Transmission of Heat

How is heat transferred?

A After listen the information write a or an to the following paragraph.

Brenda is ___ firefighter, ___ person who save lives, she has ___ dog, and its name is Ramon. She uses ___ axe to open doors. Inside her tools there is ___ utility rope and ___life safety rope. She likes to climb buildings using ___ ladder.

Conduction is the transfer of heat between substances that are in direct contact with each other.

Thermal energy is transferred from hot places to cold places by convection.

Radiation is a method of heat transfer that does not rely upon any contact between the heat source and the heated object as is the case with conduction and convection

SPEAKING Factors That Affect Fire Development

B Read the stages of fires.

Incipient

T his stage of fire development can be defined in two ways. The simplest definition is a small fire that has not yet significantly impacted the environment inside the compartment (i.e. heat, toxicity, visibility).

Growth

As the fire continues to grow, the rate of energy released by the burning fuel will continue to increase (given adequate oxygen). While considerably more complex, gas temperatures within the compartment may be described as existing in two layers: A hot layer extending down from the ceiling and a cooler layer down towards the floor

Fully Developed

At this post-flashover stage, energy release is at its greatest, but is generally limited by ventilation (more on this in a bit). Unburned gases accumulate at the ceiling level and frequently burn as they leave the compartment, resulting in flames showing from doors or windows

Decay

As the available fuel is consumed, the heat release rate will decline and the fire may return to a fuel controlled state as the available oxygen supply becomes adequate for the rate of combustion.

C Affter you read Write a paragraph about the stages of fire with your own words.

“MASONRY”

Masonry consists of building structures by laying individual masonry units (brick, concrete block, stone, etc). Masonry construction can provide beautiful walls and floors at economical prices. Due to the individual masonry units, masonry construction tends to be quite labor intensive. Concrete masonry units are some of the most commonly used materials in building construction due to their relatively low cost as wall material and their fire resistance.

Many specialty Concrete masonry units products are available: Split face, Ground face, Sand blasted, Matte face, Scored and ribbed, Light weight., Acoustical and Insulated.

A fire extinguisher, or extinguisher, is an active fire protection device used to extinguish or control small fires, often in emergency situations. It is not intended for use on an out-of-control fire, such as one which has reached the ceiling, endangers the user (ie, no escape route, smoke, explosion hazard, etc.), or otherwise requires the expertise of a fire department. Typically, a fire extinguisher consists of a hand-held cylindrical pressure vessel containing an agent which can be discharged to extinguish a fire .

In the United States, fire extinguishers in all buildings other than houses are generally required to be serviced and inspected by a Fire Protection service company at least annually. Some jurisdictions require more frequent service for fire extinguishers. The servicer places a tag on

Page 46: FIRE Book

Water-Type portable fire extinguishers contain water-based agents, such as Water, Aqueous Film-Forming Foam (AFFF), Film-Forming Fluor protein Foam (FFFP), Antifreeze, and Loaded Stream. These portable fire extinguishers leave no powder residue and are effective on Class A fires and some Class B fires. There are two basic types of water-type portable fire extinguishers, Loaded Stream and Foam.

Use pump-type water extinguishers on small Class A fire, ground cover.

Use stored-pressure water extinguishers on small Class A fires.

A Before you read Look at the title and the picture. Then answer this question .What do you think you will read about in the text?

Before using your fire extinguisher, be sure to read the instructions before it's too late. Although there are many different types of fire extinguishers, all of them operate in a similar manner.

A typical fire extinguisher contains 10 seconds of extinguishing power. This could be less if it has already been partially discharged. Always read the instructions that come with the fire extinguisher beforehand and become familiarized with its parts. It is highly recommended by fire prevention experts that you get hands-on training before operating a fire extinguisher. Most local fire departments offer this service.

Once the fire is out, don't walk away! Watch the area for a few minutes in case it re-ignites. Recharge the extinguisher immediately after use.

Woman Rescued from ChimneyTHOUSAND OAKS, Calif. – A woman stuck in the chimney of a home in Thousand Oaks was rescued and arrested.

Ventura County fire Capt. Ron Oatman said firefighters responding to neighbors’ reports of a woman crying had to chisel away much of the chimney and lubricate it with dish soap Sunday to free 30-year-old Genoveva Nunez-Figueroa.

The Ventura County Star reports she was arrested on suspicion of illegal entry and giving false information to police. The homeowner told KABC in Los Angeles that he met Nunez-Figueroa online and dated her briefly, but he recently ended the relationship. The unidentified man was not home at the time of the incident.

Nunoz-Figueroa had no clear injuries but was taken to a hospital for evaluation. Police didn’t know if she’d hired an attorney, and no phone listing for her could be found.

Oatman said firefighters destroyed the chimney and damaged the roof.

READING What hand tools do you choose?

____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

If your department allows you to choose your hand tools, I want to know which ones you choose and why? Let's take a look at where and why you would choose a tool for different occasions.

Fire attack - Usually, the attack crew will carry a tool with them during entry. This will allow them to have a means for accomplishing many tasks. One problem with carrying a tool during fire attack is the need for having both hands on the hose to advance it. Often when advancing hose the backup firefighter will put their tool down and either loose it or forget to pick it up. Keeping these considerations in mind should help you choose the tool you take with you.

Flat head axe: A backup firefighter will be able to slide the flat head down their waist strap to allow both hands free to advance hose. A Flathead axe can be used in conjunction with the Halligan to force doors, or use the axe end for chopping while the flat end can be used as a sledge hammer.

Pick head axe: Choosing the pick head has many similarities as the flat head in regards to carrying it in your waist strap area. It can also allows the function of a prying tool to the different chopping applications, but cannot be used to set the Halligan bar.

Vent Crew - if you are tasked with opening up the roof your tool selection will be as important as your saw selection. Assessing the pitch, materials, and construction type of the roof will allow you to make that decision. A flat commercial roof will require different gear then a steep, pitched residential roof.

Pick head axe: Choosing to take the pick head will allow you to use it as a foot hold or to chop through the remaining roof sheeting. And, should there be a saw failure, you have your backup tool right there. It offers ease of carrying as well.

Variations in weather

Although UK weather is unpredictable, it is rarely extreme. In summer, the average temperature ranges from 9–18 degrees Celsius (48–64 degrees Fahrenheit). On occasion, it can reach around 30 degrees Celsius (86 degrees Fahrenheit) in a heatwave, but this is rare.

In winter the average is between 2 and 7 degrees Celsius (36–45 degrees Fahrenheit), but temperatures often drop to just below 0 degrees Celsius (36 degrees Fahrenheit). Thankfully, most houses, buildings, trains and buses have good heating systems.

For weather reports and statistics, visit the Met Office website or the BBC weather website, or listen to local radio stations

A After you read answer the fallowing questions.

1. What’s the technique through the look?2. Which is the right tool?3. Do you know how to operate it?

READING Forcible Entry through Doors

If we use the “Through the Lock” technique it will do a few things for us. First off this will create less damage to the door and lock. Second, it will, in many cases, not damage the door or lock if done correctly. This technique will require the proper tools along with some training and continued practice.

The tools needed for this would be the K Tool, or the updated version called the Rex Tool. Each comes in a type of kit. The K Tool kit will contain a leather tool holder, the K Tool, shove knife, Kerry Tool and a 5/32 square stock steel rod. The Rex Tool contains the following; the Rex Tool, Kerry tool and the 5/32 square stock key and shove knife. Many proactive firefighters will add a medium sized set of needle nose pliers to this kit as well. The use of the 5/32 square stock will be discussed in a future issue.

The steps to use each follows. First confirm the door is locked. Pick the right tool for the right job.

The K Tool will have a right side and left side. We will need to understand the reasons for this. If the lock is close to the frame, we need a close area to “grip” the lock with. If the lock is located on the ground — which is sometimes the case for doors that are designed with aesthetics and security in mind, the KTool is needed.

When is your ladder due for inspection? Is your ladder safe? These questions may seem silly or trivial but proper inspection and maintenance of your ladder is crucial to ensuring safety. As ladders get worn down from normal wear and tear, they can become compromised, damaged, and even broken leading to a detrimental failure or accident when in operation. For these reasons formal inspections are legally required and must be readily available at all times, especially when requested by a Health & Safety Inspector.

1.There are __________ in a year. 3.If there are __________ make sure they’re out of the way.

2. There are __________ in homeowners’ houses.

4.There are licensed __________ who can inspect your system.

Respect the Power stripLet’s face it, homeowners love power strips – we see them as the answer to all our electrical dilemmas. Since power strips allow you to power more decorations at once, they can actually be very dangerous. For example, plugging power strips into two adjacent outlets or “piggybacking” one power strip into another could lead to a fire, we recommend one power strip per outlet.

The holidays are a time when many people adorn their homes with strings of lights and other electric decorations. However, power outlets can only handle so much voltage. According to the Electrical Safety Foundation International, holiday decorations cause more

No OvercrowdingWithout a doubt, you’ll be tempted to be naughty with your electrical wiring by plugging most or all of your decorations into one outlet…..we see this a lot. However, forcing so much electricity through a single outlet can easily lead to an overload. For the sake of your safety and home electrical system, you should plug decorations into several outlets throughout your home – better to be safe than sorry. When using extension cords make sure they’re out of the way and don’t pose a tripping hazard.

Don’t be Naughty, Be NiceIf you’re nervous about your outlets in your home (especially if it’s an older home), you should hire a licensed electrician to inspect your system. Think of it this way; would you want your home to be in tomorrows front page news? – always think like this and it will influence you to make wise decisions. A skilled electrician should be able to spot all faulty connections and help you better understand the power capacities of your outlets.

A Once you read the reading, write down with your own words what exactly a fireman does?

What does a firefighter do?

Most likely, you’re already a little familiar with the job of a firefighter. Firefighters put out fires in buildings, homes, forests, and anywhere else they occur. They do their best to keep their communities safe and they help to save lives! However, a firefighter’s job doesn’t stop there!

As a part of helping to protect people and places, firefighters also usually have responsibilities such as providing emergency medical care at the sight of an incident, rescuing people from burning buildings or other dangerous situations, and educating the public about fire safety. Firefighters also spend time repairing and maintaining their equipment, and learning new things to help them continually improve their skills. And because their job requires them to be strong, healthy, and fit, firefighters must also spend time looking after their well-being and physical fitness.

READING Personal Substance Equipment

Wearing Gloves and other Protective Gear

Firefighters and emergency medical personnel routinely glove-up immediately when dispatched to a medical emergency. Some firefighters have gotten into the habit of wearing gloves while cleaning the fire station, while checking their apparatus and equipment, and even under their leather work gloves when performing extrication activities prior to receiving the patient.

Once the rescue activity is completed, they can quickly remove the leather gloves and be ready to make contact with the patient. When asked why they do this, the answer is universal: "Would you want me touching you with dirty hands if you were my patient?"

However, they sometimes forget to wash their hands thoroughly after each patient contact. At least 15 to 20 seconds of scrubbing with a good antibacterial soap is recommended. This may be impractical at the scene of an emergency, but there are several medically approved alternative cleaning solutions that are easy to use in the field.

______________________________________________________________________________2. When Heart Attack occurs?______________________________________________________________________________3. What you should have to do in a Cardiac Arrest case?

READING How the Heart Works

The heart is responsible for circulating blood throughout the body. It is about the size of your clenched fist and sits in the chest cavity between your two lungs. Its walls are made up of muscle that can squeeze or pump blood out every time the heart "beats" or contracts. Fresh, oxygen-rich air is brought into the lungs every time you take a breath. The lungs are responsible for delivering oxygen to the blood, and the heart circulates the blood through the lungs and out to the different parts of the body.

A Read about the three Methods of Disposal.

READING Methods of disposal

Landfill:

The disposal of refuse and other waste material by burying it and covering it over with soil.

Incineration:

Incineration is a disposal method in which solid organic wastes are subjected to combustion so as to convert them into residue and gaseous products. This method is useful for disposal of residue of both solid waste management and solid residue from waste water management. This process reduces the volume of solid waste to 20 to 30 percent of the original volume. Incineration and other high temperature waste treatment systems are sometimes described as “thermal treatment”. Incinerators convert waste materials into heat, gas, steam, and ash.

Recycling:

Recycling is a resources recovery practice that refers to the collection and reuse
