Lughah: Min–al wadhaa' wa hiya-l-husni wa-n-nadhaafah-
Linguistically: The word wudhu' derived from wadha’a, which
means beauty and hygiene.
If we look at its meaning it's better to say wudhu' instead of
saying ablution.
Shar'an: Ist'maal-il-maa' fi a'dhaa'i makhsoosah bi niyyat
tatahhur-
Technically (according to Qur’an and Sunnah): Using the water
on the specific limbs (ie; prescribed parts of the human body)
with the intention of gaining (ritual) purification.
Hukmul Wudhoo' (Rulings of Wudhu')
There are two rulings of Wudhu':
1. Waajib (Obligatory)
2. Mustahabb (Recommended)
• Yajib al-wudhu' li-thalaatha ashyaa' hiya: As-Salaat, wa-
t-Tawaaf, wa mas al-Mushaf-
Wudhu' is obligatory for these three things:
1. As-Salaat (The Prayers)
2. At-Tawaaf (Circumambulating of the Ka'bah seven times
during Umrah or Hajj)
3. Touching the Mushaf (Qur'an)
Evidences from Quran and Sunnah:
Allah Subhanahu wa Ta'ala says in Surat Al-Maa'ida, 5:6-
+ہ) ٱ'& ءا$# ا إذا إ ٱ ة ٱ ا و ھ وأ ـ

O you who have believed, when you rise to [perform]
prayer, wash your faces and your forearms to the elbows
and wipe over your heads and wash your feet to the
ankles.
Hadith:
.Narrated Abu Hurairah (RadhiyAllahu 'anhu) that the
Messenger of Allah (sallAllahu 'alayhi wa sallam) said,
"Allah does not accept the prayer of one who nullified his
wudoo' (ablution) until he performs it again." [Sahih al-
Bukhari 135, Book 4, Hadith 1]
• Yastahabb al-wudhu' 'ala ad-dawaam, li-qawlihi
sallAllahu 'alayhi wa sallam…….–
It is Mustahabb (recommended) to stay in wudhu' at all
times as the Prophet (sallAllahu 'alayhi wa sallam) said: “…
and no one preservers their wudu except a Believer.” [Ibn
Maajah, Saheeh]
…..wa yata'kudu 'inda Qiraa'atil Qur'an, wa qabl-an-nawm –
And (wudhu' is recommended) when reading the Qur'an and
also before sleeping.

This is all about hukmul wudhu’.
Now we will look at fadhaa’il-al-wudhu’-
Fadhaa’il-al-wudhu (Merits of wudhu’)
It is important to understand the merits of performing وــء so
that the intention prior to performing it will be more valuable
and stronger! A complete intention is when 2 Questions are
answered in the heart (as intention/ـــــا is not said out loud):
i. For whom? -> For the sake of Allah
ii. Why? What is the benefit/reward? -> ‘specific
answer to each act of worship ’
Merits for performing the wudhu’:
1. Mahabbatillah lil-mutatahhireen-
Love of Allah is obtained for those who purify themselves (ie; for
those who make wudu’).
Allah says in Surat Al-Baqarah, 2:222-
ٲ و'& ٱ#! ٱ إن ٱ
Allah loves those who are constantly repentant and loves
those who purify themselves."
2. Innahu ‘alaamah li-ummati Muhammad (sallAllahu ‘alayhi
wa sallam), haythu ya’toona Yawm al Qiyaamah ghurran
muhajjaleen.
It (Wudu’) is a mark of being from the nation of Prophet
Muhammad (SallAllahu ‘alayhi wa sallam)
They (ie; those who perform wudhu’ perfectly according to the
Sunnah) will be distinguished from others by virtue of the
radiance issuing from their faces, hands and feet on the Day of
Resurrection.
Evidence from Hadith:
Abu Hurairah (May Allah be pleased with him) reported: I
heard the Messenger of Allah (sallallaahu ’alayhi wa
sallam) saying: "On the Day of Resurrection, my followers
(or Ummah) will be summoned `Al-Ghurr Al-Muhajjalun'
from the traces of Wudu',… [Al-Bukhari and Muslim]
[The word "Ghurr'' is the plural of "Agharr'' which means shining or white. It is used for
animals (like a horse), i.e., a white mark on its face. Here, it refers to that radiance which
will issue from the brows of the believers on the Day of Resurrection and which will
make them prominent. Muhajjalun is from Tahjil which also means whiteness but it is
used for that whiteness which is found on all the four or at least on three legs of a horse.
Here, it refers to that light which will shine through the hands and feet of the believers
because of their habit of performing Wudu'. This means that the believers among the
Muslims will be distinguished from other communities by virtue of the refulgence issuing
from their faces, hands and feet on the Day of Resurrection in the same way that a horse
with a white forehead is easily distinguised from other horses.( Source:

Another Hadith:
Abu Hurairah (May Allah be pleased with him) reported: The
Messenger of Allah (sallallaahu ’alayhi wa sallam) went to the
(Baqi`) cemetery and said, "May you be secured from
punishment, O dwellers of abode of the believers! We, if Allah
wills, will follow you. I wish we see my brothers.'' The
Companions said, "O Messenger of Allah! Are not we your
brothers?'' He (sallallaahu ’alayhi wa sallam) said, "You are my
Companions, but my brothers are those who have not come into
the world yet.'' They said; "O Messenger of Allah! How will you
recognize those of your Ummah who are not born yet? '' He
(sallallaahu ’alayhi wa sallam) said, "Say, if a man has white-
footed horses with white foreheads among horses which are
pure black, will he not recognize his own horses?'' They said;
"Certainly, O Messenger of Allah!'' He (sallallaahu ’alayhi wa
sallam) said, "They (my followers) will come with bright
faces and white limbs because of Wudu'; and I will arrive
at the Haud (Al-Kauthar) ahead of them.'' [Muslim]
So make wudhu as an ‘Ibaadah but not as a habit.
3. Feehi takfeer lil-dhunoobi wal khatayaa-
It will expiate all the sins
Evidence from hadith:
`Uthman bin `Affan (May Allah be pleased with him)
reported: The Messenger of Allah (sallallaahu ’alayhi wa
sallam) said, "He who performs the Wudu' perfectly (i.e.,
according to Sunnah), his sins will depart from his body,
even from under his nails.'' [Muslim]
Another hadith:
Uthman bin `Affan (May Allah be pleased with him) reported: I
saw the Messenger of Allah (sallallaahu ’alayhi wa sallam)
performing Wudu' the way I have just done it and said, "He who
performs Wudu' like this, his previous sins will be forgiven and
his Salat and walking to the mosque will be considered as
supererogatory act of worship.'' [Muslim]
Another hadith:
Abu Hurairah (May Allah be pleased with him) reported: The
Messenger of Allah (sallallaahu ’alayhi wa sallam) said, "When
a Muslim, or a believer, washes his face (in the course of
Wudu'), every sin which he committed with his eyes, will be
washed away from his face with water, or with the last drop of
water; when he washes his hands, every sin which is
committed by his hands will be effaced from his hands with the
water, or with the last drop of water; and when he washes his
feet, every sin his feet committed will be washed away with the
water, or with the last drop of water; until he finally emerges
cleansed of all his sins.'' [Muslim]
4. Feehi raf’un-li-darajaat-
It elevates the ranks in Paradise
Evidence from hadith:
Abu Hurairah (May Allah be pleased with him) reported
that the Messenger of Allah (sallallaahu ’alayhi wa
sallam) said, "Shall I not tell you something by which
Allah effaces the sins and elevates ranks (in Jannah)?''
The Companions said; "Certainly, O Messenger of Allah.''
He (sallallaahu ’alayhi wa sallam) said, "Performing the
Wudu' thoroughly in spite of difficult circumstances,
walking with more paces to the mosque, and waiting for
the next As-Salat (the prayer) after observing Salat;…..''
[Muslim]
5. Ahlul Jannati yuhallowna Yawm al-Qiyaamati bil-asaawir
‘ala mawaadhi’il wudoo’…..
On the Day of Judgment the dwellers of Paradise will be
adorned with bracelets on the places where wudu’ reaches.
Evidence from hadith:
The Messenger of Allah (sallAllahu ‘alayhi wa sallam)
said: “….In a believer adornment would reach the places
where ablution reaches.” [Muslim]
