Fiqh of Dua

Importance of Du’a

O you who have believed, remember Allah with much remembrance, And exalt Him morning and afternoon [Al-Ahzab 42-42]

And when My servants ask you concerning Me, then surely I am very near; I answer the prayer of the supplicant when he calls on Me, so they should answer My call and believe in Me that they may walk in the right way. (Surat al-Baqara, 2:186)

Say: Call upon Allah or call upon, the Beneficent Allah; whichever you call upon, He has the best names; and do not utter your prayer with a very raised voice nor be silent with regard to it, and seek a way between these. (Surat al-Isra, 17:110)

1. The Remembrance of Allah is an immunization against HypocrisyIndeed, the hypocrites [think to] deceive Allah , but He is deceiving them. And when they stand for prayer, they stand lazily, showing [themselves to] the people and not remembering Allah except a little,[An Nisa:142]

Thus best way to save ourselves from hypocrisy and stay away from it is to increase the remembrance of Allah with our hearts and tongues

2. The Remembrance of Allah is most effective weapon to defeat our enemy, the shaytan

And whoever is blinded from remembrance of the Most Merciful - We appoint for him a devil, and he is to him a companion[Az-Zukhruf:36]

Importance of Du’a

2. Making Du’a is obedience to Allah and a fulfillment of His order“And your Lord says, "Call upon Me; I will respond to you." [Surah Ghaafir: 60]

3. Making Du’a puts you away from having kibr arrogance/pride]“And your Lord says, "Call upon Me; I will respond to you." Indeed, those who disdain My worship will enter Hell [rendered] contemptible.” [Surah Ghaafir: 60]

4. Du’a is ibaada““And I did not create the jinn and mankind except to worship Me.” surah Dhariyat 56

The messenger of Allah (saw) said: “Du’a is worship” Tirmidhee:2969

5. Du’a is the noblest thing to AllahAbu Huraira (ra)reported that the Prophet (saw) said: “There is nothing which is noblest to Allah-The mighty and majestic than the Du’a.” Al- hakim in Mustadrak1/490.

Benefits of Du’a

6. Making Du’a is a characteristic of the righteous slaves of Allah.““…….Indeed, they used to hasten to good deeds and supplicate Us in hope and fear, and they were to Us humbly submissive.” [Surah Anbiya:90]

7. Du’a is a means for steadfastness and victory over the enemies““They said, "Our Lord, pour upon us patience and plant firmly our feet and give us victory over the disbelieving people.”[Surah Baqarah:250]

8. The Remembrance of Allah is the most deserving of deeds in rewardand the men who remember Allah often and the women who do so - for them Allah has prepared forgiveness and a great reward.[Al-Ahzab:35]

The Condition of Du’a

1. Knowing that Allah alone is the one capable of answering him“Is He [not best] who responds to the desperate one when he calls upon Him and removes evil and makes you inheritors of the earth? Is there a deity with Allah ? Little do you remember.” [Surah Naml:62]

2. You ask only Allah“And [He revealed] that the masjids are for Allah , so do not invoke with Allah anyone.”[Surah Jinn:18]

3. Not Being HastyNarrated Abu Huraira(ra):Allah's Messenger ملسو هيلع هللا ىلصsaid, "The invocation of anyone of you is granted (by Allah) if he does not show impatience (by saying, "I invoked Allah but my request has not been granted.") [Sahih al-Bukhari 6340]

The Condition of Du’a

4. Certainty of ResponseThe Prophet of Allah (saw) said: “Make Du’a to Allah while you are certain of a response”. [Tirmidhee:3479]

5. Concentration“The Prophet (saw) said: “… And know that Allah does not accept Du’a from the heart which is heedless [Tirmidhee:3479]

6. Whatever you consume has to be Pure"Indeed, Allah only accepts from the righteous ” [Surah Maaida-27]

Narrated from Abu Hurayrah (ra) that Rasulullah (saw) said: “O people, Allah is Good & Pure (tayyib) and He, therefore, accepts only that which is good.” …….. He then made a mention of a person who travels widely, his hair disheveled and covered with dust. He lifts his hand towards the sky : “O Lord, O Lord!” Whereas his diet is unlawful, his drink is unlawful, and his clothes are unlawful and his nourishment is unlawful. How can then his supplication be accepted? [Muslim]

Etiquettes of Du’a1. Praising Allah and saying salaat/salam on the prophet

Fadhaalah bin Ubaid narrated: While the Messenger of Allaah (saw) was seated, a man entered and performed the Salaah, and he said: ‘O Allaah! Forgive me, and have mercy upon me.’ The Messenger of Allaah (saw)said: “You have rushed, O praying person. When you perform Salaah, and then sit, then praise Allaah with what He is deserving of, and send prayers upon me, then call upon Him”

He (Fadhaalah) said: Then another man performed the Salaah after that, so he praised Allaah and sent prayers upon the Prophet(saw). The Prophet said to him:“O praying person! Supplicate, and you shall be answered.” [Sunan al-Tirmidhee (3476)]

2. Confessing sins and mistakes you do“…….And he called out within the darknesses, "There is no deity except You; exalted are You. Indeed, I have been of the wrongdoers.”“ [Surah Anbiya:87]

3. Be Humble:When you are praying, do not act as if you are enjoined the right to deserve whatever you are asking for. Make sure that you know that your Lord is the Most Gracious and you the Most Humble. Acknowledge your status before the Magnificent and do not be proud.

“Call your Lord humbly and secretly. He does not love those who transgress the boundaries.” (Sura al-Araf: 55)

4. Having submissiveness, humility, hope and fear “So We responded to him, and We gave to him John, and amended for him his wife. Indeed, they used to hasten to good deeds and supplicate Us in hope and fear, and they were to Us humbly submissive.”[Surah Anbiya: 90]

Etiquettes of Du’a5. Having Certainty

Narrated Abu Huraira:Allah's Messenger (saw) said, "None of you should say: 'O Allah, forgive me if You wish; O Allah, be merciful to me if You wish,' but he should always appeal to Allah with determination, for nobody can force Allah to do something against His Will." [Sahih al-Bukhari: 6339]

6. Constantly making Du’a Abu Hurairah [ra] narrated that:The Messenger of Allah (saw)said: “Whoever wishes that Allah would respond to him during hardship and grief, then let him supplicate plentifully when at ease.” [Tirmidhi:3382]

7. Avoid making du’a against yourself or ur children or ur wealthThe Prophet (peace be upon him) said: “Never beseech Allah against yourselves or against your children or against your wealth, lest you do in an hour where a petition is granted and you will be answered.” [Sahih Muslim (3009)]

8. Repeating three timesThe Prophet (peace be upon him) did so when he besought Allah in supplication against the tribe of Quraysh. [Sahih Muslim (1794)]

9. Facing the QiblahNarrated `Abdullah bin Zaid: Allah's Messenger (saw) went out to this Musalla (praying place) to offer the prayer of Istisqa.' He invoked Allah for rain and then faced the Qibla and turned his Rida' (upper garment) inside out.- Sahih al-Bukhari 6343

10. Raising the handsAbû Mûsâ al-Ash`arî relates, describing a supplication of the Prophet (peace be upon him): “…then he raised his hands and I could see the whiteness of his armpits.” [Sahîh al-Bukhârî (4323) and Sahîh Muslim (2498)]

11. Using the siwaak(Tooth stick)

12. WudhoThis is also mentioned by Abû Mûsâ al-Ash`arî in his description. He says: “He asked for water, then he made wudû’, then he raised his hands and said: ‘O Allah! Forgive `Ubayd b. `Amir.’ and I could see the whiteness of his armpits.” [Sahîh al-Bukhârî (4323) andSahîh Muslim (2498)]

Etiquettes of Du’a

13. The goal should be goodThe supplication made by Moses (peace be upon him): “My Lord! Expand my breast and ease my task for me and remove the impediment from my speech so that they may understand what I say. And give me a minister from my family – Aaron my brother. Add to my strength through him and have him share my task, that we may glorify You and remember You in abundance. Indeed, You are watchful over us.” [Sûrah TâHâ: 25-35]

14. Crying during Du’a Abd Allah b. `Amr b. al-`As relates that Allah’s Messenger (peace be upon him) recited the verse where Abraham says: “O my Lord! Indeed they (i.e. the idols) have led astray many people. So whoever follows me is from me and whoever disobeys me, then indeed You are Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.” [Sûrah Ibrâhîm: 36]

And he related the verse containing the following words of Jesus: “If You punish them, then they are indeed Your servants, and if You forgive them, you are indeed the Mighty, the Wise.” [Sûrah al-Mâ’idah: 118].

Then he raised his hands and said: “O Allah. My people! My people!” and wept. Then Allah said: “O Gabriel! Go to Muhammad – and your Lord knows best – and ask him why he weeps.” So Gabriel went to him and Allah’s Messenger (peace be upon him) informed him of what he had said. Allah knew best. Allah said: “O Gabriel! Go to Muhammad and say: We will truly make you pleased regarding your people and We shall not grieve you.” [Sahîh Muslim (202)]

Etiquettes of Du’a15. Showing need and complaining only to Allah

“He said, "I only complain of my suffering and my grief to Allah , and I know from Allah that which you do not know.” [Surah Yusuf 86]

“So he watered [their flocks] for them; then he went back to the shade and said, "My Lord, indeed I am, for whatever good You would send down to me, in need.” [Surah Qasas:24]

16. Choosing the comprehensive Du’a

17. To start with one’s selfWe see examples of this approach often in the Qur’ân. For instance: “Our Lord! Forgive us and our brethren who preceded us in faith.” [Sûrah al-Hashr: 10]

18. Make Du’a for fellow believers “…..there is no deity except Allah and ask forgiveness for your sin and for the believing men and believing women.” [Surah Muhammad:19]

"My Lord, forgive me and my parents and whoever enters my house a believer and the believing men and believing women. And do not increase the wrongdoers except in destruction.“ [Surah Nuh:28]

Etiquettes of Du’a

18. Lowering the voice“Call upon your Lord in humility and privately; indeed, He does not like transgressors.” [Surah A'raf:55]

Abû Musa relates: “We were with the the Prophet (peace be upon him) when the people began extolling the greatness of Allah in a loud voice. So the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: ‘O people! Calm your voices. You are not calling upon one who is deaf or absent. Indeed, you are calling upon the One who hears and is nearby, and He is with you’.” [Sahîh al-Bukhârî (6384)]

19. Correct formal grammar without going overboard.20. To choose the Appropriate name or Attribute OF Allah.21. Not to constrict what is encompassing. 22. Saying Ameen.23. Ask for everything.

It is authentically related that `A’ishah (ra) said: “Ask Allah even for the strap of your sandal, for indeed if Allah does not facilitate it, it will not be a simple thing.”

Special Time, Places & Situation To make Du’a

1. The last third of the NightAbu Hurairah (radiAllahu anhu) narrated that Allah’s Messenger (salAllahu alayhi wasalam) said: ‘In the last third of every night our Rabb (Cherisher and Sustainer) (Allah (Subhanahu wa Ta’ala)) descends to the lowermost heaven and says; “Who is calling Me, so that I may answer him? Who is asking Me so that may I grant him? Who is seeking forgiveness from Me so that I may forgive him?.”‘ [Sahih al-Bukhari, Hadith Qudsi]

Amr ibn Absah narrated that the Prophet said: ‘The closest any worshipper can be to His Lord is during the last part of the night, so if you can be amongst those who remember Allah at that time, then do so.’ [at-Tirmidhi, an-Nasa’i, al-Hakim – Sahih]

2. Late at nightWhen people are sleeping and busy with worldly pleasures Allah (Subhanahu wa Ta’ala) gives the believers an opportunity, or an answer hour if they can fight sleep and invoke Allah (Subhanahu wa Ta’ala) for whatever they need.

The Prophet (salAllahu alayhi wasalam) said: ‘There is at night an hour, no Muslim happens to be asking Allah any matter of this world or the Hereafter, except that he will be given it, and this (occurs) every night.’ [Muslim #757]

Special Time, Places & Situation To make Du’a.

3. Between Adhan and IqamahAnas (radiAllahu anhu) narrated that Allah’s Messenger (salAllahu alayhi wasalam) said: ‘A supplication made between the Adhan and Iqama is not rejected.’ [Ahmad, abu Dawud #521, at-Tirmidhi #212, Sahih al-Jami #3408, an-Nasai and Ibn Hibban graded it sahih (sound)]

4. An Hour on FridayNarrated Abu Hurairah (radiAllahu anhu): Allah’s Messenger (salAllahu alayhi wasalam) talked about Friday and said: ‘There is an hour o-n Friday and if a Muslim gets it while offering Salat (prayer) and asks something from Allah (Subhanahu wa Ta’ala), then Allah (Subhanahu wa Ta’ala) will definitely meet his demand.’ And he (the Prophet (salAllahu alayhi wasalam) pointed out the shortness of that particular time with his hands. [Sahih al-Bukhari]

Some have said that this hour is from the time the Imam (prayer’s leader) enters the mosque o-n Friday’s prayer until the prayer is over (ie between the two khutbahs), whereas others have said that it is the last hour of the day (ie after the Asr prayer until the Maghrib prayer).

(Note: when we say an hour here we do not mean the hour everyone knows (60 minutes) but an unspecified period of time because the time counters which we use today came after the Prophet (salAllahu alayhi wasalam) had died.

Special Time, Places & Situation To make Du’a

5. While Drinking Zamzam WaterJaber (radiAllahu anhu) narrated that Allah’s Messenger (salAllahu alayhi wasalam) said: ‘Zamzam water is for what it is drunk for.’ [Ahmad 3: 357 and Ibn Majah #3062]

This means that when you drink Zamzam water you may ask Allah (Subhanahu wa Ta’ala) for anything you like to gain or benefit from this water such as healing from illness…. etc.

6. While ProstratingAbu Hurairah (radiAllahu anhu) narrated that Allah’s Messenger (salAllahu alayhi wasalam), said: ‘The nearest a slave can be to his Lord is when he is prostrating, so invoke (supplicate) Allah (Subhanahu wa Ta’ala) much in it. [Muslim, abu Dawud, an-Nasa’i and others, Sahih al-Jami #1175]

When a Muslim is in his Salat (prayer) he is facing Allah (Subhanahu wa Ta’ala) and when he prostrates he is the nearest he can be to Allah (Subhanahu wa Ta’ala) so it is best to invoke Allah (Subhanahu wa Ta’ala) at this time. It is said that while in prostration, o-ne should not ask for worldy needs (ie a nice car, a new job, etc), but for the Hereafter.

Special Time, Places & Situation To make Du’a

7. When Waking Up at NightNarrated Ubada Bin As-Samit that Allah’s Messenger (salAllahu alayhi wasalam) said: ‘Whomever wakes up at night and says La ilaha illallahu wahdahu la shrika lahu lahulmulku, wa lahul hamdu, wa huwa ala kulli shai’in qadir. Alhamdu lillahi, wa subhanallahi wa la ilaha illallahu, wallah akbir, wa la hawla wala quwata illa billah (none has the right to be worshipped but Allah (Subhanahu wa Ta’ala) He is the o-nly o-ne who has no partners. His is the kingdom and all the praises are for Allah (Subhanahu wa Ta’ala) All the glories are for Allah (Subhanahu wa Ta’ala) And none has the right to be worshipped but Allah (Subhanahu wa Ta’ala) and Allah (Subhanahu wa Ta’ala) is the most Great and there is neither might nor power except with Allah (Subhanahu wa Ta’ala) and then says, Allahumma ighfir li (O Allah! Forgive me) or invokes Allah (Subhanahu wa Ta’ala), he will be responded to and if he makes ablution and performs Salat (prayer), his Salat (prayer) will be accepted. [Sahih al-Bukhari]

8. At The End Of The Obligatory Salat  Narrated Abu Omamah (radiAllahu anhu): that Allah’s Messenger (salAllahu alayhi

wasalam) was asked, O Messenger of Allah, which supplication is heard (by Allah (Subhanahu wa Ta’ala), he said the end of the night and at the end of the obligatory Salat (prayer) [at-Tirmidhi]

This time is after saying ‘At-tahyat’ , and before making Tasleem (finishing prayer)

Special Time, Places & Situation To make Du’a

9. The Night Of ‘Qadr’ (Decree)This night is the greatest night of the year. This is the night which the almighty Allah (Subhanahu wa Ta’ala) said about it, “The night of Al-Qadar (Decree) is better than a thousand months.” [Surah al-Qadr, 97: 3]

The Night of Decree is o-ne of the odd nights of the last ten nights of the blessed month of Ramadan. The angels descend down to the earth, and the earth is overwhelmed with peace and serenity until the break of dawn and when he doors of Paradise are opened, the worshipper is encouraged to turn to Allah to ask for his needs for this world and the Hereafter.

10. During The Rain  Narrated Sahel Ibn Sa’ad (radiAllahu anhu): that the Messenger of Allah (salAllahu alayhi

wasalam) said: ‘Two will not be rejected, Supplication when the Adhan (call of prayer) is being called, and at the time of the rain’. [Al-Hakim 2: 114, and Abu Dawud #2540, ibn Majah]

‘Seek the response to your du’as when the armies meet, and the prayer is called, and when rain falls’ [reported by Imam al-Shafi’ in al-Umm, al-Sahihah #1469]

The time of the rain is a time of mercy from Allah (Subhanahu wa Ta’ala) so, o-ne should take advantage of this time when Allah (Subhanahu wa Ta’ala) is having mercy o-n His slaves.

Special Time, Places & Situation To make Du’a

11. At the Adhan‘Seek the response to your du’as when the armies meet, and the prayer is called, and when rain falls’ [reported by Imam al-Shafi’ in al-Umm, al-Sahihah #1469]

In another hadith; ‘When the prayer is called, the doors of the skies are opened, and the du’a is answered’ [al-Tayalisi in his Musnad #2106, al-Sahihah #1413]

12. The one Who Is Suffering Injustice and Opression  The Messenger of Allah (salAllahu alayhi wasalam) said to Mua’ad Ibn Jabal (radiAllahu

anhu), ‘Beware of the supplication of the unjustly treated, because there is no shelter or veil between it (the supplication of the o-ne who is suffering injustice) and Allah (Subhanahu wa Ta’ala)’ [Sahih Al-Bukhari and Muslim]

The prophet (salAllahu alayhi wasalam) declared, ‘Three men whose dua is never rejected (by Allah) are: the fasting person until he breaks his fast (in another narration, when he breaks fast), the just ruler and the o-ne who is oppressed.’[Ahmad, at-Tirmidhi – Hasan]

In another hadith; The Prophet (salAllahu alayhi wasalam) declared: ‘Three du’as are surely answered: The du’a of the oppressed, the du’a of the traveler, and the du’a of the father/mother (upon their child)’

The o-ne who is suffering injustice is heard by Allah (Subhanahu wa Ta’ala) when he invokes Allah (Subhanahu wa Ta’ala) to retain his rights from the unjust o-ne or oppressor. Allah (Subhanahu wa Ta’ala) has sworn to help the o-ne who is suffering from injustice sooner or later as the Messenger of Allah (salAllahu alayhi wasalam) said.

Special Time, Places & Situation To make Du’a

13. The TravelerThe Messenger of Allah (salAllahu alayhi wasalam) said; Three supplications will not be rejected (by

Allah (Subhanahu wa Ta’ala)), the supplication of the parent for his child, the supplication of the one who is fasting, and the supplication of the traveler. [alBayhaqi, atTirmidhi – Sahih]

During travel supplication is heard by Allah (Subhanahu wa Ta’ala) if the trip is for a good reason, but if the trip is for a bad intention or to perform illegal things (making sins) this will not apply to it.

14. The Parent’s Supplication for their ChildThe Messenger of Allah (salAllahu alayhi wasalam) said; Three supplications will not be rejected (by Allah (Subhanahu wa Ta’ala)), the supplication of the parent for his child, the supplication of the one who is fasting, and the supplication of the traveler. [alBayhaqi, atTirmidhi – Sahih]

In another hadith; Baqiy ibn Mukhallid (radiAllahu anhu) narrated that that the Messenger of Allah (salAllahu alayhi wasalam) said: ‘Every du’a is not responded to until one sends blessings upon the Prophet (salAllahu alayhi wasalam)’ [alBayhaqi]

In another hadith; Umar (radiAllahu anhu) narrated that the Prophet (salAllahu alayhi wasalam) said: ‘Du’a is detained between the heavens and the earth and no part of it is taken up until you send blessings upon your Prophet (salAllahu alayhi wasalam)’ [atTirmidhi #486]

After a person has finished his tashahhud and before saying the ’salam’, supplication at this time is one likely to be responded to. Ibn Mas’ud narrates: I was once praying, and the Prophet (salAllahu alayhi wasalam), Abu Bakr and Umar (were all present). When I sat down (in the final tashahhud), I praised Allah, then sent salams on the Prophet, then started praying for myself. During this auspicious day, Allah does not refuse the requests of His worshippers.

18. Dua during the month of RamadanRamadan is month full of many blessings, thus the du’a of Ramadan is a blessed one. This can be inferred from the Prophet (salAllahu alayhi wasalam) saying: ‘When Ramadan comes, the Doors of Mercy (another narration says Paradise) are opened, and the doors of Hell are closed, and the Sahitans are locked up’ Thus, it is clear that du’a during Ramadan has a greater chance of being accepted, as the Gates of Paradise and Mercy are opened.
