Message from the President

Dear FIP Members, Colleagues and Friends

It would be difficult to start this letter without mentioning the mo-

mentous news put out by the HPA this week that agreement had

been reached on a set of International Rules for Polo. As the oldest

of the associations and the ones who wrote the first rules for polo in

1875, the basis of which are behind all others throughout the world,

it was right and proper that it was left to the HPA to make the an-

nouncement. We are delighted with the announcement and con-

gratulate all those involved and are pleased to say that FIP actively

participated in the process throughout. Hopefully once these rules

have been approved by the FIP Rules Committee which consists of

the AAP, HPA & USPA representatives then they will be adopted

as the official FIP International Rules.

We are also delighted to announce the second of our major global

partnerships which was concluded recently by our Marketing Com-

mittee under the Chairmanship of Dr. Richard Caleel in conjunction

with Charles Ward of Idea Works. USPA Global has become the

Federations Official Apparel Supplier for the next two years and we

look forward to working with them at the FIP European Champion-

ships in Germany this year and the FIP World Championships in

Sydney in 2017 as well as several other events around the world.

This is part of our marketing program to attract multiyear sponsor-

ship/partner agreements from select companies that complement

our organization. We would welcome your suggestions about other

international companies we might add. (Continued on Page 2)

FEDERATION OF INTERNATIONAL POLO (FIP) April 2016

“THE SPIRIT OF INTERNATIONAL POLO”

The 89th FIP Ambassador’s Cup was held 5th – 9th April at Stevie Orthwein’s stunning Port Mayaca

Polo Club in Florida. This will be the fourth time Stevie’s Club has generously hosted an FIP Ambas-

sadors Cup and there has been a full programme of matches for the six teams and social events in-

cluding an opening ceremony and cocktail party at the Polo Museum and Hall of Fame and the op-

portunity to attend several of the US Open Championship games at both Wellington and IPC.

Finally we have now appointed Ahmed Dasuki, a well known and respected player in the African polo

community as a Special Advisor to the Executive Committee and the President to work with the E

Zone Director Clive Peddle to assist us in developing the new Zone. It is the intention that Ahmed will

meet with the heads of all the national associations and then report back to the EC so that a plan can

be implemented both to enhance polo in the region by setting up an FIP Pan-African Tournament as

well as encouraging Junior Polo in the area.

It only leaves me to wish all those in Europe a safe and enjoyable season and look forward to meet-

ing many of you in the forthcoming FIP European Championships later in the year.

It seems as the controversy regarding unified polo rules between the three big

polo nations Argentina, Great Britain and the US, which has lasted over the past

decades, has finally been settled. The three polo associations, the Hurlingham

Polo Association (HPA), the Argentine Polo Association (AAP) and the United

States Polo Association (USPA), have now agreed upon a unified set of polo

rules. This was announced by the HPA.

In the past year the associations had met several times. In the course of this, the

HPA’s Rules and Regulations have been redrafted and reorganised. This means:

The Rules and Regulations have been divided into two sections. The first sec-

tion, which includes the unified rules, covers the essentials for how the game of

polo should be officiated and played worldwide. This refers to rules such as pen-

alties, the Line of the Ball and interruptions. Not affected by these changes are

rules for certain aspects such as membership, players and their equipment, sub-

stitution, pony welfare and the conditions for tournaments. The 2016 UK Summer

season will be the first time that these unified rules will be tested by the players

at all levels.
