FacilityAccess:TheFinishingSuite’smainpurposeistobea24/7studentfacilitythatsupports5.1mixing,colorgradingandupto8Kediting.However,thesuitewillbeusedforadvancedsoundmixingclassesandwillrequireoccasionalhardwareandsoftwareupdatestobeperformed.

WorkstationSpecSheet:

1. The Minishing suite features one iMac Pro with an 18 core 2.3GHz Xeonprocessor,128GBDDR4RAM,AMDVega64GPUwith16GBofRAManda1TBSSDwithdualpartitionseachrunningOSXHighSierra10.13.6on its5Kretinadisplay. AttachedtotheiMacProthereisamatchingspacegreyUSBhubwhichincludesoneUSBCport, 3USBAports, a SD card slot andmicroSD card slot.Thereisalsoabluetoothblackkeyboardandmouseondesk.2.AnAppleThunderbolt2.5KdisplayisavailableasasecondarydisplaytotheleftoftheiMacPro.3.FlandersScientiMicDM250colorgrading10bitOLEDmonitorsitstotherightoftheiMacPro.4.Therearetwoconsolesonthedesk. OntheleftsidethereistheAvidS3ProToolsControlSurfacedesignedforcreating5.1mixesintheroom. Ontherightside there is a Blackmagic Design Mini Console for DaVinci Resolve. Both

Multi-OSXPartitionsuiteThe Finishing Suite is equipped with two OSXpartitions: Mix–AvidProToolsandColor–Resolve,FCP,Premiere.

Students looking to log inanduseProToolsorMediaComposerneedtologintotheMixpartition. StudentslookingtologinanduseResolve,FCPorPremiereneedto log into the Color partition. In order to switchbetween the two partitions, students need to restartthe computer and hold down the option key andcontinuetodosountilthemacwillofferbothMixandColorpartitionsasoptions.

FiberOpticSANwithStudentLockersThe Minishing suite is equippedwith a network and aSAN. Studentswithstudentlockersneedtologinwiththeir own name and custom password in order toaccess their media in the Minishing suite. RULESTOFOLLOWWHENUSINGTHELABANYOFTHEFOLLOWINGACTIONSWILLRESULTTHELOSSOFACCESSTOTHEFINISHINGSUITE.

1.Drinking,eating,smoking,vaping,isprohibitedintheroom.2.Studentswhodamageequipmentwillbeheldresponsibleforfullreplacement

costs.3.Studentsareprohibitedfromgoingbehindthedeskandmakingrevisionstothe

workstations,i.e.(Movingcables,adjustingracksandspeakers,touchingthe77inchTV,etc…)

4.Pleasedon’tpullthemixingandgradingconsolestoofar. Thiscouldleadtothecablesbeingunpluggedorbroken.

5.Allpersonalbelongingsmustberemovedbytheendofthestudent’seditsession(thisincludesbackpacks,Milmequipment,anytrash,gum,notepaper).

6.Studentsmustkeeptheirfeetofthefurnitureandequipment.

7.Studentswithstudentlockersmustremembertologthemselvesoutattheendofthesession.

THEFINISHINGSUITEHASTWONIGHTVISIONCAMERASRECORDINGYOURACTIONS24/7

GeneralPolicies&Procedures:1.Problemswithequipment/softwaremustbeimmediatelyreportedtothesystemsadministratororoneofthelabstaff.2.ThetworemotecontrolsmustbestuckbackontothewallnearthedoorwhenMinished.3.TheMinishingsuitedoesnotallowtheuseofheadphones;thereareotherlabswhereheadphonescanbeused.4.The5.1audioisonlydesignedtoworkwiththeiMacPro.NootherHDMIdevicescanbepluggedintothesystem,thisincludeslaptops,gameconsoles,dvdandblu-rayplayers.

HowtousetheroomLights

ThereisawallmountedLEDlightremoteimmediatelytotherightofthedoorwhenenteringtheroom.TheoverheadLEDlightsoffervariouscoloroptions.Thereisalsotheoptionofusingthetwolampsintheroomaswell.

ComputerLogin

TheiMacProofferstwodifferentloginoptions.TherearestandardaccountsavailableonboththeColorandMixMacOSpartitions.

TologinintotheColorpartitiontouseDaVinciResolve,FinalCutProorPremiereProenterColorastheusernameandsvaasthepassword.

TologinintotheMixpartitiontouseProToolsorMediaComposerenterMixastheusernameandsvaasthepassword.

BoththeColorandMixMacOSpartitionsalsosupportnetworkloginusingstudentlockersthatareavailableontheUltraSAN.Ifastudentdoesnothaveastudentlocker,pleasemakeanappointmentwithKamilDobrowolskiinroom504orcall212.592.2285tosetupafreelocker.

SwitchingMacOSPartitions

TheiMacProcanonlybebootedintooneMacOSatatime.Ifastudentwantstoswitchfromthecolortothemixpartitiontheyneedtorestartthecomputer.Whentheapplelogoappearsuponrestartthestudentmustholddowntheoptionkeyuntilthemacdisplaysbothpartitionoptionsonthescreen.Thentheycanselectthepartitionoftheirchoice.

ExternalHardDrives

InthebottomrightfrontcorneroftheiMacProthereisamatchingspacegreyUSBhubwhichincludesoneUSBCport,3USBAports,aSDcardslotandmicroSDcardslot.StudentsshouldplugintheirharddrivesintothishubandneverinthebackoftheiMacPro,Thunderboltdisplayoranywhereelse

behindthedesk.Thereare4outletstotheleftofthedeskifpluggingin3.5inchharddrives.

DeepFreeze

BoththeColorandMixMacOSpartitionsalsohaveDeepFreezeinstalledonthem.ThismeansthatsavinganythingonthedesktoporanywhereinsidetheiMacProwillcausetheseMilestobeinstantlydeletedwhenthecomputerrestarts.Pleasesave

allyourprojectsandmediatoyourownexternalharddrivesorontheUltraSANstudentlockers.

TVControls

ThereisawallmountedTVremotecontrolimmediatelytotherightofthedoorwhenenteringtheroom.Theremotehasablackinputswitchbuttoninthelower

3rdoftheremotecontrol;betweentheNetMlixandAmazonbuttons.ThisisusedtotoggletheLGTVfrombeingusedasMacDisplayorasanUltraStudio4Kvideooutput.TheMacDisplayoptionjustusestheLGTVasa3rdApplecomputerdisplay.UsingtheUltraStudio4KoptionisbestwhenusingDaVinciResolve,ProTools,FinalCutPro,PremiereProandMediaComposer.PleasedonotattempttoalteranyofthedisplaysettingsbesidesswitchingHMDIinputs.Theinputswitchistheonlybuttonyoushouldhavetouseontheremote.

Consoles

Therearetwoconsolesonthedesk. OntheleftsidethereistheAvidS3ProToolsControlSurfacedesignedforcreating5.1mixesintheroom.OntherightsidethereisaBlackmagicDesignMiniConsoleforDaVinciResolve. Bothconsoleshavesomegive to them so they can bemoved slightly towards the center of the deskwhen

eithermixingorgrading.

OnlyusetheseconsolesifyouarefamiliarwiththemorhavetakencoursesinProToolsorDaVinciResolve. ThereisalsoamanualforeachconsoleonthedesktopoftheMixandColorpartitions.

ChargingCellPhones/Tablets

Therearemultipleoutletsinthebackoftheroom that feature dual USB A chargingports. Pleaseusethesetochargeyourcellphones and tablets. These outlets willchargeyourdevices fasterthanattemptingtoplugthemintotheiMacPro.

ReservingtheFinishingSuite

TheMinishingsuiteisnotintendedtobeusedasastudentloungeorplacetolistentomusicandbrowsetheweb.ThepurposeoftheMinishingsuiteistoworkonthemix,colorandMinalstagesoftheeditofaMilm.Infact,eachstudentwhoreservestheroomneedstostatewhattheyintendtousetheroomfor;mixing,colorgradingorediting.

TheFinishingSuitewillbeavailablebyreservationandwillbeopen24/7.Weareworkingonanonlinemethodtoallowstudentstoindividuallyreservetheroom;inthemeantimereservationswillbemadedirectlywiththestudentworkersonthe3rdMloor-editinglab.Thestudentmakingthereservationisliableforanydamageormisuseoftheroomincludingtheovernightsessions.Ifastudentislateby15minutesfortheirappointmentthentheroomwillbecomeavailableforsomeoneelsetotakeoverthattimeslot.Reservationswillbeavailableinthefollowingtimeslotsforbothweekdaysandweekends.

Overnightbookingwillbefrom9PMuntil9AM.Ifastudentisnotusingtheroomby9:15PM,theroomwillbecomeavailableforsomeoneelsetotakeoverthatovernight

timeslot.Studentworkersonthe3rdMloorwillbeavailableuntil10PMeverydayifaquestionorissuearises.IfthestudentwhobookedtheovernightisMinishedbefore9AM,thentheyaretolockthedoorintheMinishingsuitebeforeleaving.IfthestudentwhooriginallybookedtheroomallowsanotherstudenttousetheMinishingsuiteaftertheyaredonethenthestudentwhooriginallybookedthesessionisstillliableforanydamageormisuseoftheroom.

Aftereveryeditingsessionalabstudentworkerwillperformaquickcheckoftheroomtomakesureallequipmentisworkingandaccountedfor.IfanythingismissingorroompolicieswerebrokenthenvideofootageoftheprevioussessionwillbereviewedandMineswillbeenforced.Pleaseallowafewminutesbeforethestartofeachsessionforthemtocompletethistask.

Wewillbemonitoringhowoftentheroomwillbebookedbutthesisstudentswillhavepriorityaccesstotheroomthisspringsemester.Therewillbealimitof15hoursperstudentprojectperweek.Forexample,inagivenweekstudentscanbookanovernightslotandone3-hourslotfortheir15hoursorMive3-hourslots.Iftherearefreeslotsavailableandthesisstudentsdon’tneedtheroomthenstudentswhohavetakenorareintheirsecondsemesterofProToolscanreservetheroomaswellasstudentsthathavealreadytakentheDaVinciResolvecolorgradingclass.

AlsonotethatTuesdaysfrom3:20PMto6:10PMtherewillbeasoundclassrunningintheMinishingsuitethissemester.Alsooccasionallytherewillbeaneedtorunsoftwareandhardwareupdatesandteststotheroom.Theneedfortheseupdatesortestscanoccursuddenlyandwillresultinthestudenteitherneedingtorescheduletheirsessionorloseaportionoftheirsessiontimeuntiltheupdateorissueareresolved.

PleaseberespectfulofotherstudentsneedsandunderstandthatthisMinishingsuiteistheonlyfacilityinourdepartmentthatofferstheabilitytocreatea5.1surroundsoundmixaswellusingtheProToolsS3mixingconsole.TheroomreallyshouldbeusedonceyourmovieisinitsMinalstages.Thereareothereditingsuitesthatareavailableforwatchingdailiesandsyncingfootage.

AlsoknowthatallthesameProToolspluginsthatareinstalledinroom410areavailableintheMinishingsuite.Sostudentscanbegintheirsounddesigninroom410andthenmovetheirprojectovertheMinishingsuite.Thesameistruewhenitcomestocolorgradingandediting.PleaseusetheroomwhenyouneedtoMinalizeyourworkandseeitonthelargescreenandhearitwithoutheadphones.
