Subfloors This adds strength to the structure and
serves as an attaching base for the finish
floor.
Inadequate or improper nailing of subfloors
usually results in squeaky floors.
Most commonly used product is plywood.

InstallingW
ood Strip Flooring After the subfloor is laid
and checked, you must put
down a wall to wall layer of building paper.
Covering the heating plant
or hot air ducts with
double weight paper.
Then chalk line the joistson the paper.

Nailing The nails used should go through the subfloor and
into the joist.
The first strip should be started along either wall. Leave a ½´ for expansion, the grooved edge next
to the wall.
After perfectly aligning the strip, face nail it. This
means the nail is set below the face and the holefilled.(see illustration on the next slide)

Nailing (continued) Succeeding strips are
blind nailed.
Remember to arrange the pieces so the joints arewell distributed, and blendcolor and grain.
The pattern should run

Multiroom Layout A setup line is first laid out two flooring widths.
Starter courses are lined up with the setup line
before any nailing. A spline is set in the groove of the starter strip in
order to allow you to lay the strips in either diection.
The last strip will usually need to be ripped, andthe last few strips may be face nailed.

Estimating Strip Flooring First calculate the are in
square feet.
Then add the percentagelisted for the particular
size being used.
This gives you the number
of board feet of strip
flooring needed.

Wood Flooring Over Concrete
Suspended concrete with an air space below do
not require a moisture barrier.
Slab-on-grade installation requires sleepers or screeds. These are wood strips attached to the
concrete surface, which serve as a nailing base.
Concrete on grade or below ground level requires
an approved membrane moisture barrier.

Wood Block Flooring
Also called parquet flooring almost alwaysrequires the use of mastic.
Sometimes asphalt-saturated felt is laid and coatedwith mastic.
If the blocks are to be nailed, procedure is thesame as nailing plank and strip floors, they should
still be laid in the coat of mastic. Due to the difference in manufacturers detailed
instruction should be secured from the productmanufacturer.

Underlayment This prevents finish flooring from checking or
cracking when slight movement takes place in a
wood subfloor. Cementitous Underlayment: suited for use under
ceramic tile floors, it impervious to water.
Hardboard and Particleboard: bridges small gaps,
cups, and cracks. This applied by starting in onecorner and nailing each before the next is laid.Stagger the joints, and should be at right angles tothose in the subfloor. Special adhesives may also be used.
Pl wood: serves the same ur ose as hardboard or

Resilient Floor Tile In order to reduce telegraphing, showing
irregularities on the surface, the underlayment
must be smooth. Often a base layer of felt is laid over the
underlayment to help with this as well.
Laying Tile: after cleaning the surface start at the
center of the room with a chalk line. Snap another chalk line at right angle. Spread adhesive uptocenterlines, butt each tile to the adjoining tile.
Lastly remove any excess adhesive, carefully
following manufacturers¶ directions.
