Blood Day14
Fingertip facts
Welcome to the team!As one involved in the care and management of the world's 50 million or more voluntary, unpaid blood donors and plasma donors you are an essential member of a vast global network.WBDD relies on you for its success, and the organizers h o p e t h e i n f o r m a t i o n enclosed serves as a little reminder for you to make 14 June 2009 a very special day. Thank you!
What is WBDD?WBDD is held on 14 June each year as a worldwide celebration to honour and thank those people who donate their blood on a voluntary, unpaid basis : it is a special day to acknowledge these donors who are providing the strongest foundation for a safe and sustainable blood supply.
Objective of WBDDThe objective is not to attract a big influx of new blood donors on 14 June! But instead to create w i d e r a w a r e n e s s o f t h e importance of voluntary, unpaid blood donation and encourage more people to become regular donors, including those healthy donors who have already given blood when it was needed by a family member or friend.
Sample of WBDD key messages
In all regions of the world, blood shortages result in unnecessary deaths or ill-health. There is a need for more people to donate blood on a regular basis, especially in developing countries where blood shortages are particularly acute.
WBDD Key messages(cont'd)
Voluntary unpaid blood
donors are the cornerstone of
safe and adequate blood
supplies. Voluntary blood
donors are those who donate
blood plasma or cellular
components of their own and
are not under any pressure
from hospital staff or family
members to donate blood.
They entrust their blood
donations to be used as
needed by patients.
